I can only recall two actually...

One is Ninja Gaiden 2. For some reason I got stuck in some place and after throwing myself at it for longer amounts of time that I cared to deliver, I just gave up.

The other was Ninety Nine Nights on the hardest setting. The bullcrap factor it threw at you was just beyond me and I retired from that one. Ugh...

Zombies ate my neighbors.
I kept coming back and it kept crushing me. That game was brutal but I used to love it for that even if I could never come close to the end.

Sentient.

For now.

By my understanding it's widely considered the most difficult game on the Playstation and probably one of the most difficult ever.

And it was definitely solely on grounds of difficulty. That game is vicious, but its setting and story and concepts and characters are just amazing and I fully intend someday to come back to it and give it a serious go.

Hmmm... I'd have to say on the difficult side of the equation is was Galerians: Ash, the game wasn't necessarily difficult in skill level required so much as "grind for six hours or die" difficulty. I dropped it not long after the mission where you venture out of the compound for the first time because I hit another time to grind and couldn't take it anymore. I may pick that one up again someday.

OK, no one say Daemon Souls! (I refuse to use the s at the end of daemon ><)
1) Isn't it "Demons Souls"?
Yes it is I guess, the a in Daemon is kind of worked in from school... And Demons Souls... If they are indeed talking about demons and not some guy named Demon, it's pretty weird to write Demons Souls, isn't it? I mean Demon Souls, it's referring to several souls of demons, Daemons Soul is referring to a single soul of a demon. What is Demons Souls referring to? Why the s after both words? My English may be lacking here, so if I'm missing something, fill me in! It also rolls very, very poorly off your tongue... The two other alternatives would be much better... Remove an S I say!
Demon and daemon, they're essentially the same word (one the modern iteration the other the old latin), though most would say demon has picked up a lot of other definitions and uses in sentences in modern times while daemon isn't included in that.

Saying "Demon's Souls" is fine enough, albeit a little awkward when you stare at it too much and think how demon is singular but they attach the plural souls with the possessive as if they have multiple souls within them, but on more thought that could make sense in context of gameplay. And then I tell myself to stop.
To make it seem more logical in the above thought line add an "A" makes it easier and more... grammar friendly.
"A demon's soul"
"A demon's souls"
Remember, it's made by a company called From Software that has also made a game called Armored Core: For Answer. Need I say more?

Bayonetta. Managed to complete Ninja Gaiden 2 on Path of the Master Ninja but got stuck about half way through Bayonetta. Go figure.

I wanna be the guy. Seriously, I got three screens in before I decided I had better things to do with my life.

Yeah, I could probably beat it. But it would take too long.

Super Meat Boy - I never even made it past Hell, curse my keyboard!

Oh, and RUSH, that indie puzzle game on Steam. Man, I suck at puzzlers.

And the Impossible Quizzes - by Splapp-me-do? They are genius, really entertaining, but I don't have the patience to finish either!

This is true, but sometimes it's fun to overanalyze and discuss :).

Edit: And to stay on topic, a game so easy I got bored and stopped playing it, Assassin's Creed 2, at a particular point in the game when you get a few abilities (counter-attack) it becomes laughable, especially when they introduce that poison coupled with sneaking. I got really bored with it, simply going from jumping around collecting crap, doing the same missions over and over, and uninteresting easily dealt with combat.

The oldie Commandos 1 & 2. Those games are, what...? 15 years old? I own them both and I've never beat them.

And I love the series, but I only beat the original Homeworld a couple of years ago, and Homeworld 2 goes unbeaten. That because I refuse to use the Salvage Corvette exploit.

I gave up on God of War 3 because I cannot get past the final boss fight. I loved the rest of the game and the trilogy as a whole but that last bit just doesn't seem possible. What makes it worse is I think its the only game I currently have that I haven't beaten. (I like to finish things!)
Which part? Maybe I can give you some pointers.

OT: I actually gave up on the God of War 3 on Chaos difficulty. That difficulty made the second hardest difficulty seem like Normal.

Thanks, any pointers would be much appreciated as I really don't like leaving things unfinished!
Its the part where you fight Zeus after a cutscene with Pandora's box and can only move left and right across beam between two pillars. I think the fight is broken into two halfs by a cutscene, and I can just about get to the second half but he grinds away at my health and before I know whats happening I'm dead and contemplating using my controller as a shot put.
The secret is that most of Zeus's attacks can simply be blocked (L1). The only attack of his that I know of that can't be blocked is the 3rd part to his three-punch combo. However, he takes a little longer with that 3rd punch. Use that opportunity to double-jump over him and wail on him from behind (preferably with a combo that starts with Triangle). Also, every time he goes in the air you can jump up and grab him with Circle.

Hope this helps.

I can't think of one that I've given up on. Came close with Prototype. Oh, and Jak II. There were several missions that frustrated the hell out of me. There were some where the game wasn't worth it, like Dark Sector and Overlord, but that was more of an "it lost my interest completely" rather than "I've been trying to beat this section for about five hours" situation.

Lost Odyssey.
Seriously man, that game is motherfuckin' solid. It's the only game that I literally can't progress in. Random encounters take way too much HP out of you, HP items are too rare, and the boss fights are just stupid.
Seriously. Do not buy it. You will die in real life. The seemingly-above-average-so-far story is definitely not worth the stress this game will give you.
Jesus. I'm only on the second or third boss fight (that big worm dude that spawns loads of enemies and obliterates you with that nasty-ass laser if you spend any time attacking him like you're supposed to instead of his friends, and even if you do kill everything he spawns he respawns more and uses that apocalyptic-ass laser anyway), and I actually can't do it. I got just past the part where he revives himself (yes, he revives himself after by some act of divine help you kill him once, and in the same fight, so you have no chance to rest), and by that point one of my characters was dead, I had no reviving items left, also had no healing items left, and my other two characters were very, very low on health. His spawns finished me as soon as he revived and spawned some more.
I'd killed every single enemy I'd encountered along the way to level up so there was no reason for him to be so much stronger than me. Hell, the random encounters on that game are equivalent of about three quarters of the difficulty of an early boss fight on a normal JRPG, and they're about as common as random encounters on a normal JRPG too.
I gave up on Lost Odyssey at that boss fight, too. I looked at it, looked at how utterly crushed I was being, looked back at the puny amount of XP that killing random encounters gives me and thought "You really expect me to grind that much to beat this boss? Screw you, game." and never played it again.
i recently finished Lost oddessey and it really isnt that hard, although that is about the hardest boss in the game. the trick to playing lost oddesey is to do the OPPOSITE of everything you ever learned whilst playing a JRPG. Don't save magic , use ALL your items as soon as you need them , ALWAYS exploit enemy weaknesses, also DEFEND IS YOUR BEST FRIEND, make EVERY ring you can as soon as you can. oH and LEARN the timing to get perfect on every hit. Then and only then can you beat this game, and ill be honest the story is so amazing its totally worth it , imho

Has anyone said Dwarf Fortress yet? if not; DWARF FORTRESS.

lol i love the pic, but the thing i find the funniest is that the curb for time spent playing goes fowards, then slows down while difficulty spikes, then goes BACKWARDS rofl .... never have i felt so nerdy than right now

Yeah, the first two Commandos games are brutal. Very good, but brutal. I never did get past the Zoo mission in the first and the U-boat pen mission in the second. I always feel dumb as a result. =(

Anyway, there are two games I want to mention in regards to difficulty.

First one is Aero Fighters 2. Dear heavens, Aero Fighters 2. Nothing like a good old fashioned arcade game to tell you how much you suck.

The second one is Super Robot Wars 3. I am not kidding when I say that this game qualifies as "Angry Video Game Nerd" material. This game is the very definition of the term "Nintendo Hard". Fun, interesting and frustrating as all hell.
