League of Legends.

When I first played it the game was a wee little fledgling still in its beta stage.
At first, I didn't like it.

"ARRGH! THE GAMEPLAY IS TOO DIFFERENT FROM DOTA"

Fast forward a couple years. I decide to try out LoL again because, ironically enough, I was getting bored of Dota.

Fell in love with it. I now own half of the total champions and am level 28.

This thread is for games that you thought you were going to hate , but surprisingly you enjoyed.

For me it was Alpha protocol , i usually hate anthing that is 3rd person shooter or stealthy-ish , like mass effect , resident evil 5 ( i liked RE4 though ) , gears of war , splintercell , syphon filter , etc... I bought alpha protocol for 9 dollars new at best buy , it was most likely a error on their part because now its up to $30 . Anyways , when i played it i found it to be pretty fun , and i REALLY liked the main character , and the skills and whatnot. Anyways , all this to say is that Alpha protocol took me by surprise and i really enjoyed the game even though before playing it i thought it was going to suck.

Your turn
@OP - Wow, can't believe you liked Alpha Protocol like I did. I wasn't interested in the game right up until I played it. Since then I've played it around 5 times, even though I've never played more than one or two other games more than once.

It rocked, and I would pass up Mass Effect 2 for it any day.
Seriously, me too! I'd only heard AWFUL things about the game when it came out and when I got it for $15 bucks at Gamestop I thought I was going to have to run over it with my car for being so awful, but it was really great and a lot of fun! The only thing about it that sucks is that there's not going to be an Alpha Protocol 2 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

I think the game I was most surprised I liked was Fallout 3. It looked clunky, it looked buggy, and it looked like it was plagued by a brown/grey colour palette, and yet in the end I loved it.

Team Fortress 2. I don't like first person shooters, and don't like multiplayer. How the hell do I like TF2?

Though I have stopped playing and don't really want to come back. But after 200 something hours, I won't complain.

For me, Team Fortress 2.
The only reason why I bought the Orange Box was to play Portal and after I beat it, I decided to give TF2 a try.
At first glance I was thinking, "...What the hell is this?"
Then it eventually grew on me and, hell, I even became part of the fan base for a while.
It's silly, it's stupid, and so much fun!

Kingdom Hearts. I thought it looked really cheesy and dumb, but when I played it, it sucked me right in.

Nire - I had heard so much mixed review about this game that I didn't know if I should buy it or not but I bought it and I am so glad I did, even if the story is a bit weak but the gameplay and my god the music is fantastic and makes up for the weak story.
If you're talking about Nier then you confuse me because it probably has one of the best stories out of any console game just for having one of the greatest plot twist in any game and for the twist being done so well. Also, with the funny dialogue even if some of the character development I guess is a bit weak, the overall story is awesome.

(Did you play the second half of the game again after beating Nier the first time? If not, you may not be able to see why the story is so great.)

Dante's Inferno. A lot of people talked shit about it before it came out, but when i got in on Gamefly, I loved every minute of it. The voice acting was phenomenal, the environments were the best I have seen in any game, and the combat was superb. I think if they didn't name the character Dante, people might have liked it a lot more. It could have still been called Dante's Inferno, but they could have said the game is about Dante's version of hell.

Singularity is a fairly recent one. I was excited to play it, but I am still surprised how much I like it.

Knights of the Old Republic. I'm not a big fan of Star Wars and I had no idea what to expect. But it turned out to be really, really good.

I don't often get to try games that I don't think I'll like, though, so that's about it for me.
Did you try the sequel? I found the sequel to be better unlike many others because I don't like Star Wars. KOTOR games were both fun but the second one deconstructs some of the Star Wars stuff.

Knights of the Old Republic II. It really got alot of hate, and when I played it ended up liking it just as much as the first one. There was some significantly better writing in the game, and Kreia was a great character.
See I'm not the only one who liked the sequel. =D But KOTOR II is a game i figured I would probably like since Chris Avellone worked on it and it did have some similarities to the game Planescape: Torment he worked on as well.

Also, I wasn't surprised that I liked Alpha Protocol even though it got some shitty reviews because Chris Avellone worked on it. lol

Now, just to prove I'm not a total fanboy I don't find NWN2 that great so far... Gotten a bit better from when I first started but so far the worst Obsidian game I played (well except Dungeon Siege 3 but I only played the demo of that and I don't think Chris Avellone worked on it) . Heard the Mask of the Betrayer expansion is really good though.

super stardust HD got it and little big planet from the welcome back gift, I already had infamous and the rest didn't seem as apealing. I thought this wasn't going to be that good but hey it was free but then I played it, it was simple but so fun I love it more than infamous and little big planet.

Minecraft, for sure. I noticed all of my nerdier, more anti-social friends gushing about it and I wanted nothing to do with it, until I actually watched someone play it and I gave in.

Call of Duty 4. I originally dismissed it as the brown, generic bland-fest that most other people seem to mistake it for. Then I saw this: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/24-Call-of-Duty-4

Intrigued, I went ahead and bought it, and it subsequently became the first game to ever make me break down and cry.

Vanquish- I thought that game was going to suck. Turns out, I love Japan Style Shooters.

And when I first played Metroid Prime 3: Curruption. I thought it was going to feel too much like Halo of something like that. But no, it was really good. Better then 2 and tied with 1 for me

Plants vs. Zombies. I usually hate those damn popcap casual games, but this one had some teeth and comedy attached.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

At first I thought that just clicking on units and telling them to go here, kill that etc would be really boring and crap.

Oh how I was wrong.

Magicka. I just went "Oh, look. It's castle crashers.", then I played the demo and I enjoyed it immensely.

Oh, I adored the sequel. It just wasn't FINISHED. I kept finding myself standing in the middle of some TOTALLY EMPTY field going "erm, was that supposed to happen? Was that a bug? What's going . . . oh, we have a cutscene now. Ooooookay then."
