It was L's invasion of Light's privacy that drove him to have to watch the news and kill everyone that got arrested that day. If he had time and didn't have to worry about the cops trying to catch him so they wouldn't be out of a job he could have slowed down and concentrated more. instead all the pressure made him act fast and unthinkingly cramming names in his book when ever he had a spare moment. I'm saying the system's not perfect the real actual justice system isn't any better. I'll bet Light would kill all those white collar criminals that destroy thousands of lives like the Enron executives that get off easy because they didn't draw blood. Is murdering a criminal worse than letting one go?
The real question you should be asking is:

"Is murdering an innocent worse than letting a criminal go free?"

I generally root for the devil. You think about it, the Christian God is all knowing right? He knew Lucifer would fall, but went ahead and created him anyway, knowing full well that he'd become the enemy. What kind of God does that? And how do you live with that? "I was created to be the nemesis of an all powerful and all knowing opponent." Talk about an existence of frustration at the futility of your actions. So yeah, I root for the Devil.

Coincidentally, this is my 666th post.

L wasn't really the villain. He was the antagonist but Light was still the villain.
that's kind of your opinion. all through death note Light was doing the right thing. he's no worse than batman.
He killed a few people who didn't deserve it but they were trying to stop him from killing bad guys.
if you look at it objectively L and the police were the ones using the underhanded tactics to try and stop a vigilante do-gooder from killing criminals

I'd take it if you played Mass Effect You'd think Garrus was the evilest thing since sliced evil bread
Sorry. got to disagree with you there.
Light was a villain as time went on, he became very...well unjustified and egoitscal, Garrus never came across that way to me. I think what makes a hero and villain is the personality allot of the time.

OT: I support the villains who are smart and still use common sense.

Out of all the various villains I've seen, the ones I've wanted to win the most are probably Team Rocket. They're just so pathetic that I've always wanted them to win. It would be epic.

he didn't kill everyone accused of a crime. most of the people he killed were being looked for by the cops already, or caught red handed. I'm not saying the system's perfect but in season 2 they said crime
was practically gone. I think Light is smart enough to not act without good evidence. and don't you think Gotham would be safer if the Joker and the Riddler and all the other villains would just die quietly one night..... oh crap they all ware masks shit.... well the shinnegami eyes and some kind of Bat-X ray goggles.
you're not the "Results at any cost" kind of guy are you
"Results at any cost" campaigns typically don't end very well. Just saying.
but they get results

All of them. I always root for the bad guy. It would be way more entertaining if they won every once in a while.

In a wargame, if I can play as Nazis or Soviets, I'll take the opportunity.

Death note is probably the hardest thing to separate into a good pile and bad pile
it's all a matter of your personal philosophy
I don't think Light was ever a bad person, I think he went crazy at the end from all the pressure of trying to create his perfect crime free world.
and I think worthy goals can excuse bad choices

The humans in Avatar.

I wanted them to win so badly.
I second that. They may have been 2-dimensional G.I. Joes but they were intensely more sympathetic than the damn ubermensch-smurfs.

but they get results
What good are results if they go counter to what you're trying to accomplish in the first place?

Let's take your crime analogy.

Say someone, let's call them Bob, rapes and murders a young girl and desecrates her body before leaving it somewhere her family is guaranteed to find. In your search for this guy, you discover that he's hiding out in Chakkalakkistan in the basement of a hostel. Also in this hostel are a handful of civilians who have no idea who Bob is or what he's done.

And you've tried to get the government of Chakkalakkistan to arrest him for you, but they refuse to extradite him for whatever reason.

Your philosophy dictates that it is worthwhile, just, and all but necessary to engage in an act of war to find and kill this man. You would have two options: 1) send armed forces into a foreign country, likely starting a war, not to mention any deaths caused by the in-/ex-filtration of these forces or 2) drop a bomb on the hostel, killing an unknown number of completely innocent civilians.

The problem so many people forget about "The Ends justify the Means" is that, when all is said and done, the means are part of the end. You cannot kill a murderer for great justice, and at the same time murder an innocent person. It makes you a hypocrite and an idiot.

The real question you should be asking is:

"Is murdering an innocent worse than letting a criminal go free?"
you'd have to think about the numbers,
is mostly everyone you're killing a criminal
I think a 90+% success rate is worth it

are we still trying to decide whether L is a villain we root for or not?
or are we trying to decide whether or not I'm a villain, and whether or not you're going to root for me?

you do know there are people in this thread rooting for Nazis right, I think that's a little worse than killing criminals and some innocents in the hopes for a crime free world
