I watched it with my Dad and it seems that every other scene is reference to one of his paintings or something related to him. For instance one of the lines the Doctor says is actually a reference to a song written about Van Goph, a split second image of a chair just between him grabbing his cloak and sprinting of screen was actually a painting of a chair by him. Although even I noticed some of the obvious ones like his bedroom.

I... I didn't really like this one.

The ending was way too dragged out and the monster wasn't scary in the slightest. I miss the monsters from the Eccleson era, they were so much more imaginative (the gas mask one... *shivers*) and well done. But that's just me I guess.

Oh I haven't watched that yet. Thanks, I'll go do that now, and report back when it's done.

Although I'm encouraged by the outburst of support for this episode

EDIT: Ok, I watched it, and although I wasn't blown away, I did like it. Especially the end. As a great man once said, of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: It might have been...

True, but for me DW has never been about the scary monsters. And I thought that one with the gas masks was just mediocre. So, there you go.

I think one of the main reasons people seem to have not taken to this episode is the fact that they seem to be trying to focus on the monster when the focus of the episode was always supposed to be Vincent himself. In a way, the monster was just an aspect of his character and deperession given physical form. The episode was all about character and fairly distanced from the usual structure of a DW episode, so I can see why some might not have taken to it all that well. I personally thought it was a refreshing change from the usual 'mystery monster, discover monster, run a bit, doctor fixes things' formula and the ending was brilliantly written; as Steven Moffat put it in confidential, the one thing the doctor cannot save people from is themselves.

Just as an afterthought, I liked the little mentions of Rory during the episode, possibly forshadowing that Amy probably will remember him eventually (explosive emotional finale anyone?).

Yes *reaches for knife*

My fault, I was at a BBQ which went on longer than I would have liked, so even though it was recorded, I didn't start watching from the beginning till 30min into the episode. So I knew I would get beaten to the thread.

I thought this episode was wonderful. I cried at the end and that's a compliment to the wonderful emotion and writing of the episode. In fact, I loved it so much I am speachless, I cannot think of a bad thing to say about it. There is a possibility that this episode has knocked 'Amy's Choice' of the second-favourite spot in my eyes.
Best bit for me? The ending and:
Amy seeing the Sunflowers in the gallery, so beautiful.
A wonderful episode, so quinticentially Richard Curtis.

Richard Curtis is "the shit"
That's one way of putting it. I love his ability to make you laugh one moment and cry the next, like in films like 'Love Actually' and 'Four Weddings...'.

It was definitely more of a character driven one as the monster seemed to be secondary. The fact that it was invisible goes further towards that. Is the Doctor now going to simply go through the artistic community and cheer them all up?

If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this post then please don't call me. I'm too busy with invisible Parrots.

Exactly, I think Matt Smith is the perfect Doctor for his writing

Probably irrelevant, but did anyone else notice the "Van Gogh" advert on the man's fridge in the preview for the new episode? Probably just the dir being self-referential, but still...

OT: I, too, almost cried (in a good way) during the "Vincent gets his pay-off" scene towards the end. Brilliant episode; I thought it was going to be similar to the Shakespeare episode in a lot of bad ways, but I was pleasantly surprised. This series is getting better by the episode.

I thought it was awesome, but I was still waiting for a spooky thing to happen at the end.
Another monster, a crack or maybe no Vincent gallery.

But it was still a good episode. Not my favourite, but awesome.

The Slitheen say "hi". The empty child and to a lesser extent the father's day reapers, were the only real imaginative ones in that series. Other than that you've got half a season of daleks and slitheen...

I liked the episode, but I can't really say it was one of my favorites. Van Gogh was good and I loved the bits where the Doctor and Amy protested loudly over the destruction of his painting as he erased it to draw the creature that only he could see.

I didn't like how this episode seemed to be "that filler episode", y'know, the one that the production team commissions just to fill time rather than to tell a story. The fact that so little was given to the interactions between Van Gogh and the townsfolk, and that it was just the Doctor, Amy, and Van Gogh running around for half an hour (broadcast time, anyway) makes me think that.

I loved the ending, though. No complaints there.
