This is the frankly insane story of a Vietnamese acupuncturist who believes that a man who is yet to have sex (heterosexual, that is - gay sex and masturbation apparently don't count) will have a small, red dot behind their ear. Using this method, she has decided that three men serving time for the gang-rape of a woman in 2000 are actually innocent.

Traditional medicine practitioner Pham Thi Hong started lobbying for the men's release, pleading their case all the way to the president, because she believes all three men are virgins and therefore could not be guilty of rape.

"They all had small red spots on the back of their ears," said Hong, 54. "The spots should have disappeared if they had had sex. My many years of experience told me that these men did not have sex before."

Her claims are unusual even for a country where acupuncture and traditional medicine are still common remedies, but Hong's determination to have the case reopened - even threatening to light herself on fire - led to prosecutors re-examining the case. The convictions eventually were suspended due to flaws by initial investigators.
In totally unrelated news, the amount of red marker pens being smuggled into Vitnamese prisons has mysteriously risen by almost 300%...

Wow. Why does this lady like rapists so much? You know, acupuncture helps a lot of people, but this thing she's proposing is utter nonsense.

What the fuck is wrong with that woman? They shouldn't listen to her, they should stick her behind bars too.

Someone kill this woman, I don't give a fuck how, just make her disappear for the sake of women on this planet.

I don't see the need for a president in Vietnam, clearly the real power lies with acupuncturists. What's next? If you have a black dot on the sole of your left feet, you are incapable of murder? Jesus.

I was hoping someone would try! Someone who doesn't already suffer from acne, please, as I think that could throw the result ;-)

Well, her being insane started the ball rolling, but when the case was re-investigated it turned out that the police had ignored witness reports that called the men's guilt into question, and other things. It's likely they were innocent, and spent a decade in jail, but this nutty ***** and her crackpot theories caused them to be released. So...a net gain for the insane?

Looks like she did the right thing, since the men were set free when the case was re-opened. She helped 3, likely innocent, men get their freedom. I'd say the end justified the means here.

That woman is stupid.

But the prosecutors are also stupid for re-examaning the case.

I'm saying that if they done it that way then the red dot shouldn't disappear meaning they would be guilty.

Are you serious? This is a criminal investigation we're talking about here! This is the government - their ****ING PRESIDENT - approving of re-opening the case, not because new evidence presented itself, but because some ****ing lunatic started spouting nonsense about ears.

What if this sets a precedent? What if the government decides to take the ear thing into account every time they try a man for rape? Do you realise that they're taking this seriously?

Sure, they found him innocent after 'flaws by initial investigators', fair enough, but they only paid enough attention to find those flaws because of this terrifyingly stupid woman.

this. Or something like this, at least.

How many ways can someone rape a woman without losing their virginity? Damned if I know, and I don't want to start counting.

Why are the prosecutors stupid? They were given an order, they carried out the order. When they looked at it again, they discovered that the initial case was flawed and that it's highly likely the men were innocent to start with. How is that stupid?

Would you rather have an accupuncterist lighting herself on fire than 3 innocent men walking free? It's not like they base the convictions on that bat-shit crazy *****'s obsession, rather she just re-opened the case.

Weren't the prosecutors the ones who re-opened an old case because some nutjob said that if you're a virgin you have red dots behind your ears?

If anyone believes that, they are stupid. (In my opinion)

Maybe is wasn't the prosecutors who made the decision to re-open the case and if so then I was wrong.

And the fact that it turned out that the men were innocent is irrelevant.

They had to take it seriously enough to re-open a case, and I think you're underestimating just how significant that is. But hell, I don't know what Vietnam's like, maybe this sort of thing is standard procedure for them. I assume not. I hope not.

And frankly, if she really does set herself on fire, chances are she really is crazy, not just deluded. Keep in mind this woman is an acupuncturist. She makes a living out of sticking sharp things in people while they hold absolutely still. Not exactly the best career to have crazy in.

I don't think so - in the article, she never actually says the vaginas make the dot go away, just heterosexual intercourse. As long as you're doing it with a lady, I think anal sex still counts.

I wonder what oral does to the magic dot?
