Snow days are for sissies. Real Pennsylvanians go to school in everything up to and including 10 feet of snow.

I've lived in Erie for 21 years, and we've only had the schools close once, and that was due to ice.

Canada... we've got about a foot of snow on the ground so far, it's been a pretty warm winter so it wasn't staying on the ground well at first. It is now and everything is running fine despite the crappy plowing services in place. Schools don't actually get snow days up here unless the hot water or electricity in the building stops working. Last year I had to get to morning exams with about four feet of snow and the public transit system was on strike... meaning I had to walk the 40 minutes in from my house each day.

For schools to close in Wisconsin it generally takes a foot of snow, sheer ice, or wind-chill of -25F.

There are always exceptions though.

Snow is the norm here. There is no 'snow day', there are no temperature limits. 0C, -15C, -35C, makes no difference - you'd just better dress warmly for the journey and we've already had the pin tires be mandatory in cars for close to two months.

Looking out the window, it's pretty much what this pic looks like at this time - and has been for the past three weeks, and I'm hoping it'll keep looking like that for at least two months to come.

Anyway, around here it never closes no matter how much snow. It took me 5 times as long to reach college to finally do an exam. Just left a bit early from home and everything was OK.

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

I live in Dallas, and when I went to school, it took a white Armageddon for them to close the schools. I mean, it's not like you see snow down here that often, we usually think of it as mana from Heaven, cause we're not sure of the difference.

Now my work, UPS, doesn't seem to close at all for bad snow. I guess it makes sense, but when we had like two or three feet of snow everywhere, and pretty much all of Texas closed down, they stayed open. I mean, here we have so much snow that trees and houses are collapsing, and they expect everyone to just come in to work just fine. ...wait, most people did.

I live in west MI snow isn't a big deal we got maybe 1 snow day a year and it usually wasn't on the day we got 2 feet of snow it would be the next day after everything was plowed. Hech they don't really even bothe with plowing or salting now so the toads get pretty bad but I'm running a rear wheel drive with no ABS so it has little affect on me.
ps rear wheel drive with no ABS is about the worst thing you could possibly drive in the winter it fish tails like hell and doesn't like to stop

I live in northern BC. So, we've got snow more often than not, and as far as I can tell (just moved to this city) everything just keeps on running.

And it always surprises me how easily and quickly other places in the world practically shut down when a little (relative, I know) snow falls.

Anyway, as I've lived in Australia pretty much my whole life, I've never had the pleasures of a snow day. I have, however, had a few days where the schools were closed due to the heat (they tend to do that when the temperature's 45C/113F). There was that time 2 years back when I was living in London and we got about 2 inches of snow, the whole city pretty much shut down for that one.

I'm in eastern Washington. We had literally record snow fall for November, but the campus never shut down. Not even night classes. My girlfriend's car got literally buried, but business as usual. Hell, I got stuck trying to get back IN to my parking space one day. (I'd had to ram my way out.)

I'm in New Jersey so we get out fair share of snow each year. When I was in school though the School Board hated canceling school, and only did so if the roads were really bad.
