In New Mexico, if there's a rare bit of snow, any snow at all, school will at least be delayed. Guaranteed.

This likely change when I move to Montana next year...

I'm from Sweden, and I've never heard of a school closing because of snow...
My mom is teaching 8 year olds, and they got to skip school yesterday since the heating didn't work and it was 40 ºF, or 4 ºC, inside.

Otherwise, you just go to school like on every other normal day. Don't really see why snow would force people to stay home...

I live in Vermont. In the hilly/mountainous parts, and we get lots of snow. If its below 4 feet, there's school.

I've heard Finland takes a hardcore approach to it though. Like if there's 10 feet of snow, bring skies.
Yup, this.

It doesnt fit in to my head on how schools can be shut down because of an inch of snow...

Central BC is where I went to school. School would only shut down at -32 C (that's -25.6 F) And buses stopped running when the roads had a foot of snow on top of an inch of ice (You had to call dispatch and find out or just wait in the cold for an hour). So ya, a few years ago I think we missed an entire week of classes before Christmas and even more in January so we had to cancel Spring Break.

I live in Sweden. We're used to snow here, so nothing close because of it. There really is no difference, except for that on the first day of snow accidents usually increase and some public transportaion gets delayed.
On my way to school today I had to climb a mountain (Yeah, really) and it was like half a metre/15 feet of snow or something. It just made it more of a challenge, and therefore more fun.

I live in edmonton alberta, Canada so it never seems to affect us.
Only when it hits-35 degrees celsius without windchill we actually stop school which very rarely happens.
But we have to put up with cold temperatures all winter.
Looking at the weather it seems that today will have a low of-27....better go dress up....

I'm in Wisconsin and my brother is in Minnesota (Minneapolis to be specific, where snowfall brought down the football stadium). Snow is the norm here so we rarely ever close. We had about a foot of snowfall on Saturday and I was still out walking around and people were out driving. It was also -20F for a few mornings when I was walking to class, but we're now at a balmy 7F. In my entire life in the Midwest, I've only had school canceled 3 times. Once in elementary school, once in high school when it snowed in May, and once last year when it was 14 inches and plows weren't getting through fast enough.

I love how an inch or two of snow in the UK can turn the entire country into a scene of turmoil. Scotland's tweleve inches though and I can see the problem...

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

EDIT: Huh, didn't know there were so many N.C. member around here.
We have about a foot and no closed school :(

We get a fair amount of snow fairly regularly up here in Canadia, so it needs to be like a foot or two of snow to consider any closures. Granted some days there should be more closures than others, but we're stubborn like that.

I live around Edmonton, Alberta, so unless the snow is waist high and the wind-chill drops the temperature to something ridiculous, then school will be open.

I live in the Maritimes, (Canada BTW), and if we don't get more than 3 feet of snow in 1 night there's school...

Strange though, considering we got off school for the whole week because of rain...

When I was in elementary/Highschool, we'd get a 1 foot snow fall every day for two days, and the buses would be about an hour late. Now both my parents left for work before I even got up in the morning, so it's not like I could ask them for a drive in.

I would still get detention because the bus never showed and I had to walk 30 min to get to school. Their excuse: I should have asked a neightbor to drive me in.

Like I'm going to inconveniance my neightbors because the school's fucking buses are run by idiots

As far as I know, it has never snowed in my area of North California. Schools were closed due to some floods once though.
