True story. I was standing out there for about twenty minutes. When your -5 degree classroom feels all warm and cuddly with your jacket off, there's something wrong.

Either your school district is poopy or you live out in the sticks or something...I've seen classes canceled for ~2" or so. I remember one time when I was in middle school they canceled it due to low temperatures (didn't want kids walking to school/bus stops)...of course no one was expecting that and I sat for a good half hour at my bus stop waiting like an idiot. Of course, our sanitation people are kinda "eh", sometimes the roads just don't get salted and everyone wakes up to 2" of snow on the roads.chris11246 said:

Not really. In most cases it is because neither the people nor the government have the resources (experience, plows, salt trucks, etc) necessary to properly manage the situation. In my old hometown, snow was common enough that it takes a pretty bad storm to shut anything down. In Austin however, snow of any sort would virtually paralyze the city as it doesn't have significant resources necessary to sort out the situation since getting snow in the city is so very, very rare (years pass between snowstorms).muckinscavitch said:

I live in Texas if we get a foot of snow no one will show up for work or to school. Why you might ask because we will all be playing in the snow.
I'm in Vermont too, and they were always so schizo about cancelling school. One day, we'd get like a dusting and close the schools and the next, we'd have a blizzard and schools would stay open.Irridium said:
Here in Maine, our schools laugh in the face of snow and press on through almost anything (although there was one time when school got cancelled due to a forecasted blizzard that never actually happened... we ended up getting a beautiful and sunny day off from school.

I live on the northen tip of the main island of japan, its snowed a little bit here, but nobody's canceled anything.
Though, when winter REALLY gets going, there's going to be problems. 12 annual (at least) feet a year of snow, and no official japanese road clearing services? yeah, thats gonna suck. Gonna need to buy snowshoes to get to work.

OT: As he said, Norway doesn't close schools based on weather, and well, I don't really think any of those who get a lot of snow do, it's natural so we don't think of it as a crisis. Of course if you go to Oslo they'll usually flip out if there's snow even though it's December...

Well, the last time there was enough snow for any sort of accumulation on the ground in Florida was 1977, so I've never had a snow day. I think if we ever had so much as a centimeter on the ground, no matter what the school board said, everyone would stay home to play in the snow. We do, however, have storm days.
Storm days absolutely suck, because we only get them if a hurricane or a pretty solid tropical storm is coming through, and we have to make them up by taking days out of Thanksgiving break. When students are home for a storm day, they don't get to play. Instead, they either help prepare the house for the storm, picking easily blown objects up out of the yard and so on, or they evacuate the area. Nine times out of ten, the storm isn't bad enough to do much more than blow down some tree branches and bring some much needed rain, but that one in ten chance is horrible when it hits. I remember 2004, when we had four major hurricanes in one year, and we were without power at my house for over a week, twice. We got off lucky; a lot of people lost their home entirely, and you couldn't drive through a single neighborhood without seeing at least one blue tarp that had temporarily replaced a roof. Some areas were more like a sea of tarps. I envy you people who get snow days instead of storm days.
