Final Fantasy X-2. It's when the series suddenly dropped down in quality.
XII was one of the strongest in the entire series, for me atleast.
XIII on the other hand...

Super Mario Galaxy 2. I don't understand why it deserves one, other than to print more money.
Well, for some reason the first Galaxy didn't really get to me, played a bit and just didn't really care, absolutely loved the 2nd though, it caused me to pick up a Wii and consequently I've almost exclusively been playing Wii titles for the past 3 months.

Bioshock 2, I loved the first one but feel absolutely no need to buy the 2nd nor do I see why it was needed.

Rock Band 2, thought they were just going to do a ton of DLC for the first.

FF X-2, wasn't needed, although the combat system was nice.

Hmm, interesting question - not sequels which were bad but sequels I just didn't expect?

Even though Bioshock and Portal were both pretty good self-contained stories, I figured there would be sequels to both. I mean, they were both really successful games - so I was pretty sure the devs would wanna make more.

Trying to rack what remains of my brains for sequels that genuinely did take me by surprise. Hmm. Do game remakes count? Because there was an old ZX Spectrum game called The Sentinel (You had to climb a hill, unless 'the sentinel' was looking at you) that was one hell of a bizarre game which got a PC 'remake' in the late 90's, I think. That was a pretty odd idea to bring back, but at least they were taking risks, I suppose.

The upcoming Mechwarrior 5 was a surprise, but at least it's a nice surprise.

Don't know enough about console games really to comment on those. I'd never even heard of Kane & Lynch. Maybe I'm getting old...

I'll leave it there. This one stumped me. Good question, OP.

Bloodrayne.

This applies to both the game and the movie.

I enjoyed the Bloodrayne video games, I even thought the sequel was better. I do agree with you about the movies though, they did suck.

The Force Unleashed
This game's writers need to be beaten for centering a plot around a SECRET CLONE. Fucking weak.

Crank (movie)
The whole plot was "you are going to die, kill those responsible first." Why is a sequel necessary and why does it make sense?

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts
I guess I would have liked to see continuation from the first game, but the sequel was SO fucking bad I wanted the developer to die by a knife to the stomach so their acids slowly poisoned the rest of their body to death. A game based upon hunting and realism with an actual hunting brand name had nothing but story line and negligible "quick missions" which were linear and painful. To top it all off, and I still have trouble believing this myself, the final "boss" of this "realism" game, if that isn't a bad enough start, is a fucking yeti. Not making that up, you circle strafe and shoot a yeti with a hunting rifle while it throws rocks at you with a fucking life bar. Realism my ass.

Sorry, had to rant a bit.

Okay, so it was in a technical sense, a "prequel", but Perfect Dark Zero was a terrible addition to the Perfect Dark franchise. Take Perfect Dark out of the title, change names of people and places as needed, and you've got a halfway decent standalone game. As a PD game, no no NO.

The D&D movie badly needed a sequel to wash the bad taste of the original out of our mouths. Wrath of the Dragon God wasn't good by movie standards, but at least it represented the archetypal D&D adventure.

starcraft sequel took me off by complete surprise... i mean sure starcraft was sorta cool at first, but it got old fast, and it was generally pretty crap really. And now a sequel like 12 years later? Whats up with that Blizzard? They should seriously just be spending that time and effort on something that actually counts, like making the next wow expansion.
I'm guessing it's something to do with its popularity in places like South Korea. It's absolutely massive there, so there's clearly a market for a sequel.
wow... and here i though my sarcasm was completely obvious... troll successful?

For moives... gonna have to go with the Batman moives. And I mean Batman Returns, Batman Fovever, and Batman and Robin. Also the Catwomen moives.

For games... gonna go out on a limb and say Resident Evil.... hear me through... All but Resident Evil 4 and 5.

You can now troll away.

Probably Dawn of War 2.

Every second someone works on a Gamesworkstop game about space marines is a second that isn't spent on a game about the Orks or Tau.

I WANT TO WAAAAAAAGH PEOPLE.

Although I totally agree with you regarding the movie(s)(which in my opinion should never have been made in the first place) I can't help but point out that Bloodrayne 2 the game was in many ways a great improvement to the first one with significant changes in game-play and graphics. Also that it had a much better story in my opinion.

most of the time when people talk ill of SSB, they get flamed so I was just preparing myself. SSB to me was a "they really made a game like this?" moment. I thought it was pretty dumb.

DMC was boring, the story wasn't that great and I have never been a fan of the "mash all buttons as fast as you can til everything is dead" style of game play. It takes no thought really, just fast fingers. (that IS what she said) At least god of war had a good story to back it up.
