Um...well...Im of 2 minds here.

On one hand, it could be good. In that over the top action movie, Inglorious Basterds kind of way. It can be fun to just mow down Nazis, and though it risks being kind of derivative next to Borderlands, theres enough room for deviation to make it a solid game. Gearbox has a pretty solid track record.

On the other hand, I have applauded Brothers in Arms in the past for being one of the very few WW2 games with a sense of gravitas. Most portray the fighting as exercises in strategy and twitch, or a good versus evil story. Those things are fine, but Brothers in Arms was the rare game that actually had emotional impact. You sense that whats happening is sad and terrifying, not something to cheer about. And that earned it a niche I deeply respected. this complete 180 is just way too jarring. It's like if the sequel to Shindlers List were a wacky sitcom. The context is just to grating, it undermines the entire end result. I understand that Gearbox wants a recognizable IP to slap onto a new game to feel safer with sales, and there is this WW2 name right there that you own but seriously, this needs a different name. Start with a new name and we can go into the game thinking of it as a new IP, not as the demise of a previous one.

I don't remember Brothers in Arms being based on Inglorious Basterds...

Very upsetting, as BIA was one of my favorite games in my high school days

I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way. When the spokesperson for the game started talking about presenting WW2 in a different angle I was half convinced that the next BIA would tackle heavy issues that the gaming industry typically tiptoes around like the holocaust or partisan fighters. Then I saw... this. Instead of what could have been a huge leap forward in how we view interactive media they showed... this. Though I generally have no problem with games that don't take themselves too seriously, this trailer was just so over the top that I could'nt help facepalming through most of it.

Apparently its "comedy" when you dress like a Mahican but your obviously from Brooklyn. And its slapstick when you brand someones head. *sigh*

If they just went with the title "Furious 4" people would think its a gory, idiotic WW2 based Left 4 Dead Multiplayer esq naughty kids game....it probably wouldnt of sold well as a result.

However "Brothers In Arms" conjures up one of the worlds greatest generations of people in the wake of the largest conflict in history. Good men dying for a right cause.

Cue the the f**king muppets! -_-

So, the only reason any of you are complaining is because it has the Brothers In Arms name, but looks very different? It's Final Fantasy XIII all over again! No matter how fun the game ends up being, it'll be shit because it's not what it's SUPPOSED to be based on a franchise assigned to it right guys? I thought the trailer was pretty fucking awesome and it looks like it could be a lot of fun with friends. Typical of The Escapist user base though.
Brothers In Arms as a franchise is one of the most applauded and accurate WW2 Shooters.

"The game has been highly praised for this gritty, violent, uncensored and realistic portrayal of the sacrifice made by servicemen during World War II, Gameratings.com announced that Brothers in Arms is "The Highest Rated WWII Action Franchise of All Time", the series also has been fully endorsed by the V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars), the National D-Day Museum, The Patton Museum Foundation, The National Ordnance Museum, and was even introduced and played at West Point Military Academy."[footnote]I totally Wikipedia'd that[/footnote]

It has prized historical accuracy above all else, the settings have all been painstakingly recreated from actual photos of WW2, the guns, characters, and levels were all made as accurately and realistically as possible. It revolves around cover based squad manouevers, if you tried to play the game as you would Medal of Honor or COD you would never survive the first level. Everything about the franchise is made as authentically as possible, following the story of a tight group of soldiers just trying to survive the war, facing death daily.

Now, compare that with the trailer we were given. It was crass, fast paced run and gun action, gory and brutal for the sake of it, deliberately inaccurate strategy, deliberately inaccurate weapons, deliberately inaccurate soldiers! It doesn't continue the story arcs that have been established in the previous games, or even attempt to fit into the same universe. It's not just that it "Looks very different" it's that it insults everything the previous games have tried to convey by taking on the same mantle.

Now I wouldn't be as upset if this was the Halo or Splinter Cell franchises, but the BIA franchise was a noble attempt by developers to make a WW2 game that was as authentic and realistic as possible, it was all based on real people, real places, real events, and non-gamers and veterans of the war it depicted have applauded the lengths that it went to, and the realistic setting it achieved. The "Furious Four", by taking on the mantle of a BIA game, just craps all over what they have achieved.

This is blastheme, this is madness! this is inglorious basterds the game!!!!!arrrhgh!

I havent played the first 2 games, but Hells Highway was just a breath of fresh bloody air, litteraly, the characters were deep, the difference between fighting for a good cause, and sarcraficing a part of yourself to do it was shown in the game, and as the game ended with a "To Be Continued" screen I was very excited for the next game, but no, you turn this into an Inglorious Basterds rip off, Fuck you gearbox, seriously fuck you and your Duke Nukem game model.

People all complain that modern shooters today are too gritty and realistic. Ok says gearbox, we'll make an overtop shooter in which you can go ballistic and kill nazis "No that's stupid" say the fans. At least they are trying something different, even if it is a little silly? Is duke nukem any different?
I'm sorry, I wasn't aware Duke Nukem started as a game that was already well-established as a serious war drama with realistic, tactical gameplay.

Alright guys, listen: it's not that they're making a game that isn't realistic. It's that they're taking a game that's already established as being something and making it something completely different. As fans of that game, yes, we're going to be pissed off.

Wait.... What?

This is like... I have no good analogy. I didn't like the BiA's games (WW2 for one thing, and the controls/AI were clumsy, imo), but this is just bad.

You want to make a Borderlands WW2 game, fine, but don't make it part of a franchise that has, until this point, been a squad-based tac shooter.

On the other hand, I'm hoping this is a sign that WW2 games are on the way out. Nothing against the era, but enough's enough.

Only game i've ever expected to sell less then 10 copies. I love Brothers in Arms but this...I don't understand why they would make it like this? Why does it even need the name. Don't ruin a series like that.
