I'm surprised that with the remakes of good Asian movies they've done so far, that they haven't gone for the best one yet, Seven Samurai.
That would be "The magnificent seven" ;)

How could I have forgotten?
I always forget counting westerns when it comes to movies, despite loving them a lot.

I can never get too worked up about these issues. People that appreciate the original for it's creativity, atmosphere and who think japanese acting is actually pretty sweet, don't have to watch the new one. They can leave it for people who just want and endless stream of violence and one liners like every other action film.
Also, when you think about it, can you imagine Spielberg and Smith sticking too strongly to the original story? Don't seem to be their kinda thing. Doubt there'll be much resemblance at all...

Much like Wanted, however it still tarnished the name. There is no doubt that what you say is true, but still, when I talk about Wanted, someone always interjects with 'that film was proper shit!' and I have to tell them that I'm talking about the graphic novel, and they tell me 'well if it's like the film it's shit'. Another example could be Naruto, but that's localisation and not adaptation.

Not to mention that they can do an endless stream of violence and one liners with a completely original story, which apparently doesn't exist any more.

in fairness, the remake of the ring was pretty good, but that's only because it was directed by the same guy.
spielberg and smith are totally wrong for this film, they're both too normal and nice and mainstream. you need someone a bit leftfield to be able to pull this film off, possibly a darren aronofsky or someone like him.
Or possibly Jim Jarmusch. He's done good fight scenes.

But, in all actuality, it shouldn't be remade.

Humph. Cant exactly say it looks very good from the scene I just watched but i'm always up for a martial artsy movie.

The Oldboy manga was great, but I have to say the movie didn't really grab me the way it has others. It lacked the depth and complexity of the manga, I'm afraid.

I must admit, that fight scene was epic in all proportions. I must find this original.

Very good point you make there. However, a very odd thought has struck me...
Surely the release of this new film will boost awareness of the original material. People, like everyone in this thread, who enjoy that kinda stuff could then look into it. It's how I got into the original Cloverfield, afterall.

(Looks like I ain't got the hang of quoting yet...)

I know I'm probably overreacting, but has Hollywood become so damned stale that they have to remake eastern works into their own?.
I belive this already happened when they made Godzilla a while ago. Also all they have been putting out are movies based on old T.V. shows and Comic Books so it doesn't suprize me to see that they are now ripping off films from other countries.

I have never seen this movie (Watching video later), but this is how I feel about the upcoming remake to Let the Right One In. They're going to turn a beautiful movie into a piece of Hollywood trash.

EDIT:Just saw it and that was awesome.
They're gonna remake Let the Right One In? Why?... I can kind of understand remaking a really old film (Even though 99% of the time they turn out crap) but remaking a film that was JUST released only to change the language? That's just dumb. Also, Swedish sounds way better. :p

You have all right to over react. Hollywood do have a tendancy to ruin good films, and this one doesn't seem like much of an acception really. It's this attempt they're trying to do at being original in Hollywood by remaking films that people wouldn't expect them to remake. However, these usually go wrong as a result.

Indeed they have, but the difference being that a lot of those films were, how can I say this, remake friendly? Ring is something that was able to be remade with ease, same with Infernal Affairs, same with many others. But Oldboy? Could anyone do that better? There's no way the film's plot is going to stay intact, Spielberg and Smith don't have the balls, and I stick by that.

I also stick by the belief that Smith is a solid actor.

Lol they're remaking Let the Right One In?

Maybe they can stop it from being so fucking slow haha

I'm just kidding, I didn't enjoy Let the Right One in but I stand against remakes on principle. If people are too lazy to read subtitles they can stick to fucking English films

Did anyone see Quarantine? It was literally just [REC] in English XD Pretty much everything else was exactly the same except for like, 2 scenes. America could've given the millions of pounds used to remake the exact same film and fed a load of starving Africans or something.

TL;DR: Remakes suck and I am kicking off

No doubt. I was just commenting on the fact that lately he's trying to shed his wise-cracking summer blockbuster fresh prince persona and make films that are more serious in tone (i.e. Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, Seven Pounds, and now this Oldboy remake), and the result has been "meh" at best.

I don't even see how a Spielberg/Smith combo could pull Oldboy off, and I love both of them. Plus I don't see the content of the film really flying with a mainstream Western audience. The whole incest theme throughout the film would be a bit hard to stomach for some I think. On top of that I don't see Will Smith eating a bunch of live squid to pull off a scene...
