That was pretty much my reaction when my mom told me that she liked Twilight.

Now, I have always known my mother to have very good taste in literature, although her tastes often differ from my own. Understandibly, when she told me about her opinion on Twilight, I was quite shocked.

I have never actually read the books but I assumed, due to the verbal and textual beatings the series has recieved on this and other forums, they were shit.

I am now considering reading the books myself to find the truth behind this and I can't help but think that maybe we all missed something here.

Was my assessment of my mother's taste in books inaccurate? Has this happened to anyone else?

Twilight the books is crap, and i hated the movie for one sole reason. Why would you play a Radiohead song, a really good song, i might add, after a movie so tremendously god-awful!

Look. The books are probably good. The movies suck. The two are only connected by the fact that they share a similar story.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I thought about reading it, but the idea of homosexual vampires isn't very appealing.

Nobody cares about Twilight anymore, do not post if you simply have generic hatred, even if that is all the thing deserves, try reeeeeeeeally hard not to be predictable. That is all.

No actually, the movie is better than the book (which was weird). Seriously, as much as I think they are terrible terrible works of literature and cinema we have to realize that they are marketed toward the same crowd who likes Hannah Montana

I dunno, I saw the movie and thought it was crap, and vowed never to read the book EVER. However, some people who I consider to be really educated have told me that the book is actually interesting and well written. I have no intention of reading a book about glitter-soaked vampires, but I wouldn't chastise anyone who came up to me and said they liked the book.

Now if someone came up to me and said they liked the MOVIE, that would be a different story.

I thought they were all gay... Isnt that what its about, gay rights and stuff? No, I guess that would have given it some meaning and depth. XD

Twilight can be entertaining yes
it is not good as the writting level is sub par and some story ideas are simply dumb like the sparkly vampire crap. If you can look past this you may enjoyit but like i said it is not good in the same way as LOTR.

I haven't read it, and it's not on my lists to read - I'd rather focus on finishing reading Discworld, Royal Assasin series, Dune, HP Lovecraft's stuff, and everything else.

I'm cynical in general, but it seems that the main whine is coming from all the people who want their vampires to be fucking 2 dimensional characters a la Dracula. Y'know, living in a castle, BLARGH!, dancing with young ladies and sucking their blood. That's it.

I could agree with showing vampires more human - because they ARE supposed to be human. They ARE emotional characters, and not 2-dimensional blood suckers.

That's what I fucking hate about a lot of fantasy - WHY does nearly every necromancer or lich have to be generic evil guy? Why? Maybe it's just a person who swore to defend his or her people with his life, and uses necromantic powers to raise the dead for the sake of defense - it's a lot better to lose a bunch of mindless corpses then y'know, living people.

I like vampires and werewolves in the Discworld series, among other things. Characters like Angua and urgh... pretty much any vampire who abstain from blood drinking in many of the novels - they have actual depth, emotional issues, and everything. That's what makes it fun and interesting.
But that's the thing!
She took away a lot of the stuff that made them cool, in exchange for NO depth, and NO emotion.

Seriously, a brick has more feelings than the characters in those books.

I've always thought that Twilight was like Angel without the cool. No matter how good anyone thinks it is, everyone knows that Angel kicks it's ass. Every page you read just reminds you that you could be watching Angelus rip someone's throat out and dance in a rain of blood.
