It may just be me, but usually when you hear a lot of people complain about something, you usually think said thing would turn out to be true. But, I dunno, for video games, I see a lot of people making big deals out of nothing. =/

My first 2 for this are Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed. My brother got these for Christmas and we've been going through them, and we haven't found anything wrong with the gameplay or story (some of the main complaints of both).

Also, another big one being, SSB: Brawl. I thought it was an improvement on Melee, more/better stages, online, custom stages, random collectible, and the like. And while I didnt play Melee like a madman like some people did apperently, I vastly enjoyed/still enjoy Brawl.

So, what have you people thought was over-exaggerations that you've heard about certain games/parts of games?

(ie. Bosses being letdowns when they werent, confusing plot when it really isnt, etc.)

Who, exactly, are your sources? Assasin's Creed won tons of awards, and SSB:Brawl is generally accepted as the best of the series, but with a few control and camera aspects that could have been improved.

Sounds like you've been paying too much attention to a whiny and ungrateful bunch. Still, its good that you haven't let them determine your opinions for you. :)

It's because one person, generally a reviewer, finds something that they alone dislike. People thne follow and repeat the reviewer's opinion as their own because they can't think for themselves.

my problem with the first assassin's creed game was the pointless, tedious bits between doing anything relevant (walking the horse to the next city, getting pushed around by lepers). Otherwise it was ok.

I think for me though, I have sort of the opposite problem where I play a game that everyone says is awesome and I neeeeeeed to try it out for some odd reason, and I just plain end up hating it or not finding it particularly immersive or interesting.

example: Killzone 2, SOCOM Tactical Strike, and a few others I can't think of at the moment.

I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but Sonic 06.

Yes, you heard me correctly.

I genuinely believe that this game is a lot better than a lot of people make it out to be.

Might be because I have the PS3 version.
Might be because I bought it a long time after its release (Feb '09)
Might be because I bought it knowing it wasn't going to be perfect.
Might be because I didn't expect the moon's weight in Ancient Martian Gold when it was released.

Might even be a combination of the four.

But I bought it, and I don't regret it. For all its "game-breaking glitches" (which I haven't ran into yet, not even in Wave Ocean since that's the most glitchy of all apparently) and its "incredibly long loading screens" (5 seconds per cutscene, 10 for a level. Yeah, it's annoying seeing it every single time, but there's a thing called "patience"), it's unnecessarily underrated.

People did not like the story in Prince of Persia becasue it differes from the WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY original story, the gameplay is because it assumes you're a hardcore gamer and wants you to (at least by the end) do things ABSOLUTELY PERFECT or else failure . . .

oh wait the new Prince of Persia? that's becasue the story is nothing like the sands of time story, and the battles are more block-counter-block-counter rather then actual dodging, attacking and strategy . . .

as for Assassin's Creed, it's likely that the story seems kind of weak when you start off at top rank, go for all of one mission as powerful and immediately get all your fun murder toys stolen from you by your boss because he thinks you were a dick in the last mission you did. Making you start over from the start. And then there's the ENDING for Assassin's Creed one . . . I won't go into it, but essentially it's one of those endigns that maeks you go "um . . . wait . . . what the hell? you mean . . . no . . . come on . . . that's all?"

now, as for SSBB, it's a polarizing game . . . and is more a multi-player game then anything, and even at that point it has a tendency to "seem" very random chance to alot of fighting game fans, being that there's no real "combos" or cancels and you have the adding in of items, and the frankly nonsensical final smashes in some cases (Luigi . . . I'm looking RIGHT at you)

But none of this means YOU should think these games are bad, even with all this I just poured over those three I really enjoyed Assassin's Creed, played it through twice before renting AC2, and the new Prince of Persia is alright once you get past the combat and just enjoy the scenary (easier if you're a fan of Ico). And I even enjoy SSBB, I went through single player and did everything possible, eventually unlocked EVERY character, and beat every event except 1 . . . and have been working on the trophies and cds and stickers, it's a fun game if you can get into the mood for it. Which from my experince is the mood for some just . . . well, as my friend calls it "mallet to the face action"

Well, the big two obviously, MW2 and Halo.

Dead Space gets a lot of hate but I think it's one of thebest games I've ever played, I was utterly engrossed for the entire thing.

I got something to say about KZ2 as well, everyone was saying how awesome it was, frankly KZ1 was more original, more awesome and more enjoyable . . . KZ2 was just them endign the story suprisingly quickly. That and honestly when I got to the final fight I had no clue I was AT the final fight, I'd been talking to someone online and was conviced I was at the half way mark, then I beat the boss, and the story hits the final climax and the credits roll.

beautiful sure, but amazing? not so much . . .

Deadspace gets alot of hate? I don't see why, it's at least functional . . . sure it's ripping off Event Horizon, and every Alien movie back to the original Riddley scott one, but there's something to be said for doing a good job of it . . .

(even without Sigourney Weaver)

I got this for Mirror's Edge. The impression being "well, they tried something new and so what if it didn't work". Hell, I might pay $60 for Mirror's Edge 2.

Killing Floor also; it seems for a lot of people it's a hit-or-miss game.

Most reviewers, professional and amateur, eventually realize that it's a lot more fun for them to write about bad things because there's more to say when you don't like something. And there are more opportunities to be funny about it. So they do like Yahtzee does, finding the inevitable one or two gripes about an otherwise good game and harping on them to death.

The only thing you can do to avoid being misled by this is to understand who you're listening to. With Yahtzee, we know he does this because he's paid to be funny about crappy games. If you know somebody is harping on little things because that's their job, you won't be inclined to listen to them about an entire game.

The 2 game series i have a problem with is HALO.. and the COD series pretty much as soon as it hit the 360 and such.. First problem with HALO is that its insanely over hyped... Its a mediocre shooter at best.. Think about it.. The single player is horrible.. You have infinite health just hide for a few seconds all you get back to normal.. Weapons arent that great.. Arent that many options.. The fighting gets dull very fast... Now the reason i think it was hyped so badly is because it was one of the firsts decent shooters to come out on the XBOX and the current generation for the XBOX thought it was the best ever because they didn't know any better..

Now onto COD.. i gotta say i like COD2 and COD3 better than halo on the Original Xbox.. There just so much more fun.. It might be because the online community isn't a bunch of l33t 9 year old kids.. But really it has even less options than Halo.. Altho its 1 player mode is much better than halo.. Anyway the WAW and MW and MW2 games just got the message all wrong.. COD games in my opinion are supposed to be FIRST and foremost fun 1 player games.. Then a great Multiplayer.. WAW and the MWs series emphasised on the multiplayer sure it can be fun but it gets old fast.. And again largely due to the horrible community.. I like to think of these games as the FF7's of 2009.. Because FF7 was much worse than FF6 And yet got a huuuuuuuge following... Because it was a decent RPG with some nice graphics for the time.. And still has a following to this day.. Hell i think FF9 is at least 1.5x better than FF7 could ever hope to be.. And doesnt have near the following.. FF6 is atleast 5X better in my opinion its the best FF..

Prototype got plenty of hate for the graphics, and story... but I liked them.
Plus, Navi really never got on my nerves.

Yes, it gets a lot of hate.

Like many other survivial horror games, it fell foul of the 'I hate it because it isn't Silent Hill 2' syndrome.
