Bleach is a good one if you really want to get into it. Inuyasha is a classic if your looking for something a bit older.

Outlaw Star. The perfect starter anime. Great story, not too deep but entertaining enough to be enjoyable. Great characters, great humour. It was my first anime and I still watch it after all these years.

The Boondocks isn't really anime, it just has a similar art style. Try watching some stuff by studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Howles Moving Castle, Castle of Cogliostro) thats basically the best of the best if that doesn't grab you then mabey Anime just isn't for you.

Also Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D are pretty bad ass.

Really depends on what type of genre's you're into. I'd check out the stuff that is popular but has very few episodes. Don't dive headfirst into anything that has more than like 20 or so episodes because a lot of it gets dragged out or suffers from "DBZ syndrome" (basically tons of cliff hangers/ repeats for like the first 5 mins).
Cowboy Bebop is a fairly short series and most people really like it.

Studio Ghibli has some brilliant stuff. I was fucking amazed the first time I saw Spirited Away. Absolutely brilliant.

Whoa that's a really broad question; all depends on what you're into really. I mean if you're into hardcore action shonen I'd start with DBZ (or Kai), Bleach, One Piece or even Naruto (It IS a good starting point, even though I don't take it seriously it is a lot of fun for the first series.)

Anything aside from that really isn't my area of expertise; personally I'm not a huge otaku, I just stick to my target age range and stuff that's mainstream. If you're looking for just generally good shonen anime I watch stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Afro Samurai, Outlaw Star. . . I'm missing loads but yeah, I'd reccomend those especially out of the 20-25ish anime I watch

Higurashi no naku koro ni.

My favorites series, and I bet I ninja'd a few people.

Scary, paranoid, and disturbing.

Depends on what you're looking for- for a Dragonball Z kinda anime that's a bit more recent, try Bleach.

For something with a more comedic feel, try Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star (I would recommend the former first)- both are pretty short though, only about 20 episodes each, and you gotta watch them online.

Angel Beats was a good mix of both (though leaning more on the comedic side), but it's kinda on the short side since there's only 13 episodes if I recall correctly...

Detective Conan is a VERY good mystery anime with lots of episodes, but you need to watch it online since it only airs in Japan; but I HIGHLY recommend it.

I remember that being posted somewhere here a while back. It was quite disturbing.

My first anime(when I was but a wee 14) were Vampire Hunter D (the original, although the remake was great as well), Dominion Tank Police, the Sol Bianca OVA, Demon City Shinjuku, the Plastic Little OVA, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. Obviously anime has changed since then, but those are what worked for me. For more modern ones I would suggest: Bleach and Last Exile.

DBZ is one of the favourites. Naruto wasn't too bad but honestly it didnt really catch my attention. Best one i've watched though is Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple. Sat in absolute hysterics watching that :)

[Warning, heavy use of wiki-links]

To start with, avoid ALL meta-series. They are not a good starting point, and are known for turning off people new to anime.
Meta-anime includes: Dragonball: Anything, Bleach, Naruto, One Peice, Sailor Moon, Ranma, or anything else that has a 3 digit episode list.

That aside, if you intend to start somewhere, good movies and short series are probably the better way to hold your interest.
Anything from Studio Ghibli is good. Link [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli#Films_.28excluding_short_films_or_Ghibli_Museum_releases.29]
As are movies such as Ghost in the Shell [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell], Akira [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_%28film%29], Steamboy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy] and the Evangelion remakes. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebuild_of_Evangelion] (See: Neon Genesis Evangelion [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion])

Anime series are always going to fall down to a persons taste in both the art style and the content, so rather than going into detail on them, I will just make a few suggestions.

Martian Successor Nadesico [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_Successor_Nadesico]
Cowboy Bebop [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Bebop]
Last Exile [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Exile]
Fruits Basket [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruits_Basket]
Lucky Star [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Star_%28manga%29]
That should be varied enough without going too far.

Hey, I started with Sailor Moon, and it got me into anime. It's a great series, just requires a lot of time investment.

Not really one for starting with.

My answer: Death Note.

Definitely.

Well, I do not think you can have just one starting anime. Many genres must be suggested.

That being said, I can see what you mean.

Just a clip from it. I think it was that. It was very bloody and showed one character hacking away at another in a variety of ways.

EDIT: You are referring to Higurashi no naku koro ni correct?
