A good comedy styled anime with a realistic feel that can be pushed, is Great Teacher Onizuka.

Trigun is a great anime, mixing an awesome main character with comedy. 'Till later on when it gets serious. The show takes place in a Desert-planet where it's pretty much a huge Western with mixtures of futuristic machines.

There's Bleach wich is a great action series, that has a very good sense of humour.

Naruto's a popular series with a mixture of comedy, action and drama.

One Piece is a great anime that uses a grand adventure, with serious tones and comedical tones that work well.

Plus, you can't go wrong with Pirates.

You can also try Ranma 1/2, finding the episodes might be difficult but Veoh has most of them.

It's a comedy action about a boy who's cursed to turn into a girl when splashed with cold water. It uses numerous comical parodies of Martial arts and jokes with him gender swapping and his father becoming a Giant Panda.

Neon Genesis Evangelion's an okay anime. With a serious tone, it involves children who pilot mechs made from creatures to stop "Angels" that attack Japan.

Soul Eater's great if you want good action and pure comedy. Almost every episode should make you laugh and the battle scenes are great.

Dragon Ball is a great show entailing the life of a young child who travels the world searching for mystical Dragon Ball's wich once gathered's summons a Dragon who can grant any wish.

Dragon Ball Z is the follow up, where the young boy is now an adult. The show relys heavily on fighting and action, with plenty of destruction.

Those are a few good ones.

The only problem with the mainstream Bleach, Naruto and One Piece is that they all go on for way too long (300+ episodes and not even finished yet) and the mangas are better anyway and that Naruto doesn't get to the point until about Shippuden
I happen to love their length. It's great how it goes on. I always feel dissapointed when a series ends and I no longer get to see the lives of those characters anymore unless I watch re-runs.

I'd never recommend Elfen Lied to a first-timer. God no.
Elfen Lied was the first animé that I really paid attention to. So I don't see a problem with that. Although I would recommend with due caution.

OT: Well it depends on what you like. I for instance enjoy action, comedy, and ecchi, so one of my favorite animés is Girls Bravo. Now, despite its name, this is hardly a show for girls, at least not your typical girly girl[footnote]No sexism intended.[/footnote]. Now I wouldn't tell just anyone to watch it. I mean, it's filled with nudity, violence and sometimes really bad jokes, but it has some appealing things to it. Like how it never takes itself too seriously.

One Piece, it's got an amazing story and it's still going, it may be a bit boring first but stick with it, it's really good but if you like shallow characters, samey villains and overall bland storyline, then I reccomend Naruto >____>

Well I could tell you what to AVOID if that helps?

Lucky Star: This series is mercilessly reference-heavy and REALLY slow-paced. It also satirizes the mindset of anime fans, which will go over the heads of newcomers.

FLCL aka Fooly Cooly: I've heard numerous reports of people whose hatred of anime stemmed from watching this series first. (Hell, I like anime and I didn't like this series).

Yeah, I second this.
