For starters, don't get into 'anime' because it's an umbrella term which doesn't really apply to content. It's like saying "I can't get into British books." There's plenty of variety within anime.

Fullmetal Alchemist is good if you want to go in for ethical dilemma and mild mindfuckery in between Ed being a hilarious bastard. Plus the dub is actually REALLY good so you don't have to hunt around for the subtitled version to get the actual story.

If you'd like something in the heavy mindfuckery range then Evangeligon is the way to go. I am being completely serious when I say that a girl in my dorm watched the whole season nonstop over the course of about 30 hours and when I went to check on her after she reached the end she was wide eyed and shaking. Also giant robots which bleed and penguins which live in fridges.

In the lighter ranges Golden Boy is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Only about 6 or 7 episodes long too so you can get through it quickly. Same is true for the Shinesmen, who are businessmen Power Rangers with colors like Sepia, and Dragon Half, which is a special kind of crack which can only be experienced. Both Shinesmen and Dragon Half are 2 or 3 episodes long.

Also in the lighter side is Ranma 1/2, though it runs forever. It's made by Rumiko Takahashi who also did Inuyasha, but it suffers from less angst and has a whole lot more silly. Once all the major players are introduced it's like the Simpsons; once the particular story of the day is done with then it's never mentioned again. Each story you get a new kind of martial arts, like martial arts gymnastics or martial arts tea ceremony. The varied ways that normal things are turned into weapons is pretty neat.

Very well said, and I totally agree.

I envy your dorm-mate, I don't think even I could finish NGE in a single sitting. o_O
Ranma definitely is made of win though.

Now and Then Here and There.

It's a deep, depressing series which depicts children being kidnapped and brainwashed into being soldiers, forced breeding (involving said child soldiers who deliver the women to the chosen adult soldiers waiting to rape them) oh and child torture and lots and lots of people crying and dieing.

To me, this series is what anime can be. It can deep. Mournful. It can carry a message. Because there are places in the world where this stuff happens.

That is more of a cartoon than an anime, but some of the suggestion here like Outlaw Star are a good starting place. In my opinion the best animes are the ones that often end early. One of my favorites is Samurai Champloo, which you may enjoy once you get an appreciation for anime.

Best not watch anime just because it's anime, watch it because of the content.

Maybe you'd be better off listing the things you're into.

Cowboy Bebop

The show is only around 28 episodes or so and one movie. So in comparison to others, its short so it doesn't feel daunting to view, plus its incredibly good.

You want a good horror action oh wait you said anime. If you are going into anime the English dubs are horrible so go to subs. But I say you look into Manga. There is a good action/horror/psychological manga called Deadman Wonderland.
If you are looking for a funny sports one: Eyeshield 21, or a drama sports: Nononono

Uh there are some mainstream ones if you want Naruto (meh), Bleach (meh), Dragonball Z (good), uh thats all I got OH and Kuroshitsuji (Black Buttler).

My first few animes were Cowboy Bebop, Samurai X (I'd suggest the OVA's Trust and Betrayal first), Ninja Scroll and Gundam Wing Endless Waltz I think was the title... Oh and Ghost in the Shell (the first movie, 1995 or 96 i think...)

These cover a large variety of genres and styles and you can pretty much get a basic idea of it all.

If you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop, I recommend to follow it up with Black Lagoon, if you enjoyed Samurai X and Ninja Scroll then Kurozuka and Shigurui are very good animes to go on that line, and if you enjoyed Gundam Wing you can go on with Code Geass and Full Metal Panic.
Ghost in the Shell is trully in a class of its own but Hellsing, Gungslinger Girl and Trigun give great "sequels" so to speak.

Anyway, check out some anime review pages, download a few movies since you can spend this way 1 hour or so to get the basic idea of what genre you enjoy most and then search.

Hope this doesn't get edit or gets me a ban but http://www.anime-planet.com/users/pSYoniK/anime you can see a short list of my animes here, some great recommandations for each one. Have fun ;]

I'd definitely suggest either outlaw star or cowboy bebop as a start, both are really well rounded stories with good characters.

It's hard to give any constructive ideas unless we know the reason that you can't get into anime. From the post I assume that you've tried other anime/cartoon besides the boondocks. So if you can pin point what about anime exactly is turning you off, people can give you suggestion base on what you can accept.

Soul Eater
Spice and Wolf
Toradora
Trigun
Trinity Blood
True Tears
Vampire Knight
Welcome to the NHK
Witchblade
Zero no Tsukaima
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Zombie Loan

though some are preferences, i dont like boring ones or old anime that look ugly. there are some drama mix's in there. but any of them are good. my favourite ones being the psychological ones like chaos head or welcome to the NHK.

Edit: IMO anime is more diverse than real shows as they have more options for plots and everything since it isnt based on real life.

It all depends on what you're asking from an anime. If you want dark fantasy then there's Kuroshitsuji, Vampire Knight and the Higurashi series.
If you want a sit back relax light hearted comedy anime then there's Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star.
If you want action there's Bleach, Naruto, the first and second series of Full Metal Panic! and Buso Renkin.

The only problem with the mainstream Bleach, Naruto and One Piece is that they all go on for way too long (300+ episodes and not even finished yet) and the mangas are better anyway and that Naruto doesn't get to the point until about Shippuden.

My fave anime is Kuroshitsuji and the Full Metal Panic! and I'd happily reccomend that to anyone ^.^ But like I said there's so much anime out there it's simply a matter of taste.

Hellsing - fairly short at only 13 episodes but still worth a look with some good characters. Count Dracula working for a very shouty British women with a very good HR department apparently fighting against artificially made vampires in the UK. This one has a special place in my heart as it showed me that not all vampires sparkle these days.

Hellsing Ultimate - follows the manga and is superior to its older brother in visuals, character development and story (they aren't the same, the characters are different and it goes in a completely different direction altogether). Builds on what was great with the first series.

I love those too far too much, others to look at would be:

Soul Eater
Fullmetal Alchemist
Gundam Seed

I'd never recommend Elfen Lied to a first-timer. God no.
Haha, gotta get them into the mind-set early. My first was GANTZ.

Goning for something tamer, perhaps Gintama or even Naruto, it gets a lot of hate but it's not that bad, then work your way up. xxx.

Bleach is a good one if you really want to get into it. Inuyasha is a classic if your looking for something a bit older.
I started with Naruto and moved on to Bleach, haven't finished Bleach yet though.
