One Piece?? Naruto?? Death Note?? I really can't get into any of those, but if you want something that feels more fresh IMO then Burst Angel and Kenichi are the way to go. way better story lines than a 14 year old ninja in an orange jumpsuit.
Burst Angel: Crazy high octane action, deep characters, giant boobs, crazy hot chicks with little clothing, and more giant boobs.
Kenichi: Kung-Fu action, great character development, hilarious at times, and of course giant boobs.
happy hunting!

Higurashi no naku koro ni.

My favorites series, and I bet I ninja'd a few people.

Scary, paranoid, and disturbing.
I remember that being posted somewhere here a while back. It was quite disturbing.

Outlaw Star. The perfect starter anime. Great story, not too deep but entertaining enough to be enjoyable. Great characters, great humour. It was my first anime and I still watch it after all these years.
I'm gonna try this. I haven't watched any anime yet either.
So you have watched it?
Just a clip from it. I think it was that. It was very bloody and showed one character hacking away at another in a variety of ways.
Makes it seem like just gore porn huh?

But its not, I assure you. The show is more about the paranoia, not the violence. And it has a very good story.

Cowboy Bebop is probably the best place to start...though anywhere on my top 10 list will work...
1. Serial Experiments Lain, It's The Second coming of Jesus, I even did a review!!! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.214642-Sacmans-Sac-tastic-Anime-Review-Serial-Experiments-Lain]

2. Ergo Proxy, A lot of people say Ergo Proxy is an anime you have to think about but on reflection it feels more like a parody or satire of over pretentious anime like Eva. The last episode is even titled "Deus Ex Machina."

3. Elfen Lied, What this show does is hard to explain. It's gory and bloody and filled with tasteless nudity but I loved it. Elfen Lied just got me so attachedto the characters that come the end I cried...

4. Welcome To The NHK. It's hard to explain... I mean it's really the only slice of life I've ever loved this much but I'm just not exactly sure why. It could be the pitch black humor, the realistic characters, the social satire, or even the brilliant writing. Honestly, however, I think it's more the fact that Sato's, The main character's, situation hit's very close to home for me...

5. FLCL. I hate to sound like everyone else but FLCL is 6 episodes of awesome craziness!!!

6. Blue Sub No. 6. I used to watch this as a kid on Toonami and I really didn't get it but going back to watch all 4 episodes now I can safely say it's one of the most polished OVA series I've ever see, with an amazing soundtrack, great action, great animation, a standout art style, and one of the most coherent messages about human nature I've seen in anime.

7.Gundam The 08TH MS Team. It really stands out for me because it's one of the few Gundam series that give a general sense of fear because the action is unpredictable and the characters really endear themselves to the audiance...

8. Paranoia Agent. It's a truly great murder mystery that keeps you guessing at every turn but look past that and you'll find a very intriguing deconstruction of the human mind...

9.Gungrave. Possibly one of the most underrated shows I've seen. Gungrave is a truly great story about friendship, love and betrayal without ever falling into cheesiness the great animation, spectacular fight scenes and well thought out character development doesn't hurt either.

10.Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. Despite having no real plot, since I consider Kai and Rei to be non canon, Higurashi is one of the most atmospheric and frightening shows I've ever seen. It constantly keeps you guessing and always gives a feeling of paranoia and dread...

A few of my favorites:

Serial Experiments Lain(of course): dark, minimalist, and holds up extremely well.

Ranma 1/2: hilarious, romantic, and has great fight scenes.

Sailor Moon: same as above. Never take this show too seriously, but when it gets serious, it gets good.

Kare Kano/His & Her Circumstances: Great romantic comedy, at least for half of the show.

Bubblegum Crisis(2032): classic cyberpunk. Ignore the remake.

Weiss Kreuz: guilty pleasure, but solid action drama.

what anime should i watch to get into it?
well...if your a beginner i would suggest naruto because its mild and won't get to complicated, but i won't because it takes forever to get into shuppuden....seriously...after the main story of naruto you have to go through 100 ep of filler. and its not like you can skip it because alot of importaint shit happens.

now when you feel ready i suggest Lucky Star because its damn funny and you can watch any episoad because there is no plot, its just a day in the life of 4 girl high school students...and I know if you watch it you will LOVE Konata....she is hilarious.

and when you feel ready to dive head first into anime you sould watch Elfen Lied. Now this is the anime that really got me into it. This you have to watch in order because its about story and charecters. It runs for 14 ep and 1 OVA. This is a very emotion based anime and is regerded by...pretty much everyone as one of the best. This is the one anime that made me cry out of pure emotion....i did cry at Pokemon 4 ever as a kid because....i don't know celibe was cute i guess. But I seriousely recomend this anime to you.

If you have any questions you can send me a messege and i usually respond right away or within the hour. Thanks for reading the wall-o-text.

Oh fuck you, the memories of secretly watching that on Toonami are coming back. Bittersweet nostalgia, how I hate thee!

Anyway, the best "first animes" for me were Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and Gunslinger Girl. Strangely enough, my first anime was Elfen Lied, which is still easily my favorite.

And for those of you who don't know: Elfen Lied has a lot of gore, blood, nudity, and sadness.

EDIT: If you can tolerate high violence, blood, fanservice, and badassery, watch High School of the Dead.

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and above all Baccano!
Baccano! is honestly my top anime on that list.
Hmm... the order I would recommend is 1)Baccano!, 2)Cowboy Bebop and 3)Trigun.

I honestly think that as a starting point, he should start with a movie to see if the styles are palatable first, then move on to something in his area of taste.

To help, my first anime was Akira, and from there I moved onto some of the other movies (since they required much less investment of time than a whole series). After the movies, I ended up watching Robotech (yeah, horrible now that we can watch Macross).

From there it was anything I could get my hands on. The first time I watched a series that actually defined the genre for me would have been Neon Genesis Evangelion, and not too long after that was Berserk.

In the end, you will find types that you will really like and types that you'll stop watching after 5 minutes, just like if you were to watch TV shows or movies.

To sum up, let us know what style of stuff you like to watch currently, and we can work on bridging the gap from there.

I wouldn't recommend Baccano! to start due to the large cast. Cowboy Bebop is a good starter, as is Trigun.

Full Metal Alchemist - normal, not Brotherhood. And maybe Wolf's Rain, if you're looking for something a bit more serious.

Cowboy Bebop's good too.

I wouldn't go with Inuyasha, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, etc. Too much to catch up on, too much filler.

Cowboy Bebop is similar to Outlaw Star. It's a bit more down-to-Earth though.

I'd suggest Avatar the Last Airebender. It's from a western publisher, so you'll get the humor, plus a second season is coming out soon, so you should finish just in time. Overall a very good story, and doesn't suffer any of the generic anime cliches.
Um, if you want pure japanese anime stuff, then I would suggest...Ergo Proxy, Cormrorite High, Bokurano and DeathNote. Also, most any Gundam is a good place to start.
Google each one, check them out, see if any suit your taste.

Boondocks is definitely a good start but you have to remember its still very different to anime as a whole. I would advise just to get on the right track for good anime;

Cowboy Bebop - Its a well paced anime, the dubbing is great and the characters are actually relatable.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The first season is interesting and engaging without being condisending, its well thought out and you can watch an episode on its own for most of it without the feeling your missing something.

Deathnote - Very very brain intensive, its dark and can be a bit of a brain bender.

I'd never recommend Elfen Lied to a first-timer. God no.
Well I guess it depends on how mature they are, really. Or maybe what their pre-conceptions about anime are (and if they think it's all kiddy cartoons, ho-boy are they in for a surprise).

OT: We'd really need more specifics about what sort you're into. Just 'anime' is was too broad.

For a starter to anime, I would say most of these wouldn't be all that great. Lain, Ergo, Lied, NHK, Paranoia Agent, and Higurashi require a bit of use to the genre as they all tend to get really weird. FLCL is flat out nuts, and has little coherence. 08th MS Team would be good, but it's set in a universe where a LOT more is going on (and a lot more of that is more newb-friendly). Out of all of them, I'd say Gungrave is probably the tamest for someone to start with. However, in the end, it'd be best to find out what the OP likes and suggest from there. 'Awesome' anime usually require being someone seasoned enough to endure the heavy crap they lay on you.
