Yeah I've tried it for like 20 hours. I'm not a fan. On first glance it looks cool. Space ninja sound awesome but the Warframes just look dumb. That's not the only problem I have with it most of the mission types suck, it's kind of a grind, class choice seams irreverent for a large part of leveling up, and the game is dense as fuck. You need a wiki to understand whats going on at all. I'm sure it's a fine game, but for my part I get the same experience form Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. And if I can get the same experience form something simpler I'm going to go for it. Taxes are complicated enough.

If your Melee focused you should look into Rhino [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Rhino], Valkyr [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Valkyr] or Chroma [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Chroma] as all 3 are basically the 'tanks', and it's highly likely you already have some of Rhino, though personally, I would point you toward Valkyr or Chroma.
Checked those out, and from what I read - and from what others have said in this topic - I think I'm going to aim for Valkyr...she sounds like a lot of fun. :3

other then that, you'll REALLY wanna focus on building up your mod collection, and since you like Melee, Steel Fiber and Rage should be on your short list, a long with Stream Line and Flow, for Melee though, it really depends on the weapon, so you'll wanna pay attention to the Status and Crit Chances and mod accordingly, BUT Body Count(at max rank extends your Combo durration to a totaly of 15 seconds, from the base 3 seconds) and Blood Rush (at max rank 165% Crit Chance per combo meter 'tier'. so at tier 2, which is x2 damage you would have a crit chance boost of 330%, up to 990% at x4 damage) should be a priority, as both, together, on a tanky Frame, will allow you to do some absurd damage.
And considering I'm going to be pursuing Valkyr, I'm guessing I definitely would want to go with more of a crit build...any idea for a good melee weapon? I've been thinking about going Dual Kama.

As for your obstacle courses on Void missions, they're something that appears there sometimes. You step on the plate and if you get to the treasure room in time, you can get something like 2-5 mods from a pretty good pool I'd say. Otherwise you just get a load of credits.
Damn...wish I would have known that. As it is I ended up wandering around the room before even jumping into the laser pit because I didn't know what the hell was going on. :p

P.S. If you are a new player the first thing to learn is a traverse combo which will fling you across the map like crazy, especially needed for high level stuff when you run out of options.
What you do is floor slide -> jump into bullet spin -> second jump at the end -> aim glide as far as it will take you -> land with a floor slide so you don't stagger, and then you can repeat the process.
Yeah, I'm actually pretty good at that. I'm even better at launching myself off into "bottomless pits" by doing this. I swear, any map that has a pit right before the extraction point (or in the general vicinity of the extraction point) will inevitably end with me flinging myself into that pit...sometimes multiple times before I just say screw it and walk normally to the end. :p

Also statistically the highest chance of Forma drops are Void Survival 2 missions, but for some reason most people get them with Void Mobile Defense 3.
I'll definitely keep that in mind. Probably won't start farming void missions till I get Valkyr, but I had been trying to farm up formas on Exterminate. Managed to find 1 after playing 6 or 7 exterminate towers.

She is a lot of fun, my most used Frame, actually. Admittedly though, I find my self taking Chroma more then Valkyr these days, the extra utility he has over her an all. You should have a lot of fun with her, there are few joys like saying 'fuck all ya'all' and breaking out her claws to just mowing down every one.

Do keep in mind, Blood Rush and Body count DO NOT WORK with Valkyr's Hysteria, I tried it already, didn't work and I was then sad. so if you want to use Valkyr for this I Strongly recommend picking up the 'Eternal War' mod, it's a Syndicate mod, New Loka and Perin Sequence (I think Perin has it anyway)

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Tekko - if your wanna partake in the fine and noble art of 'punching a mother fucker in the face'

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Dual_Ichor - The old 'go to' for melee crit weapons for a lot of Tenno. Plus it's easy to get modded for corrosive, which melts armor. Clan Tech only thought.

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Mios - don't really wanna go lower then a weapon with a 20% base crit rate, but I've found this one crits pretty well with just True Steel, plus, it's a personal favorite, as if can be ether a crit weapon or a status weapon, or both if you do it right. Clan Tech again though

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Dual_Kamas_Prime -\
http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Scindo_Prime -/ The Scindo Prime is another 'go to' weapon for crits, and the Dual Kamas Prime don't do to bad ether, just good luck fighting the RNG for them if your not gonna get Plat and go through the trade channel to get them.

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Destreza - I'm still messing around with this one. but it has a decent crit chance and has so far been fun to use, it's also the only one here that has a 100% buy option for the the weapon and stance.

I kinda main Trinity Prime, and like distinctly offbeat weapons (my tonkor (snerk) comes out only for sorties and special occasions) so, my advice may not be the best.

Weaponwioise, I like Latron prime, burston prime, rakta cernons, paris prime and dread for primaries, Lex prime and Spira for secondaries.

(I have to note that here in the UK Tonker is a childish slang word for penis, which kind of gives me lowbrow amusements at people playing with their tonkor)

I am actually starting warframe and I have a question:

How good are the dragon nakana, and Mios and how much do the following mods cost in plat for unranked versions:
-Primed Flow
-Primed Reach
-Tempo Royale
-Life Strike
-Berserker
-Voltaic Strike
-Virulent Scourge
-Vicious Frost
-Focus Energy

As a MR21 Master Founder (bow to me, lowly peasants!), I can safely say: Until you're at 'endgame', play what you like the feel of the most. Any weapons can take you through the solar system.

As for my own preferences:

Primary Rifle: Braton/Prime or Soma/Prime, depending on if I need elemental or crit damage.
Primary Shotgun: (Vaykor)/ Hek, or the Kohm.
Secondary: (Vaykor)/Marelok, Furis, Bolto.
Melee: Orthos/Prime, Destrezsa, Scindo/Prime or Tipedo.

I don't recall which of these are MR-locked, mea culpa.

As far as Warframes are concerned: Of the starters, Excalibur is easily the best. His fairly-recent rework makes him phenomenal. Luckily, Mag and Volt are up for a review and should be reworked 'Soon'. So likely in a few months.
Any comment on the following melee weapons and stances as I plan to make a melee Excaliber/Saryn/Valkyr
-Defiled Snapdragon Mios
-Tempo Royale Galatine
-Tranquil Cleave Dragon Nakana
-Shimmering Blight Orthos Prime

Well first off, if you're going to build Excalibur and Valkyr around their melee ultimate, you should be aware that the weapon you're using on them doesn't matter at all - the ability replaces the weapon. However, it still takes into account the mods you're using on your melee.
The only thing that might affect your decision is whether or not Excalibur's 'Exalted Blade' ultimate uses its own parry damage reduction percentage, or inherits it from the melee weapon. I'm not sure what the case is, haven't gotten around to testing it, but if it does inherit, you'd want to use the Dragon Nikana.

The weapons themselves for general use? Very good. If you can find Primed Reach on the trade channel for a reasonable price (don't ask me about prices, I'm awful), then a PReach Galatine or OrthosP has a huge reach - and PReach is very useful for Valkyr's ultimate since she can melee those pesky Nullifier bubbles without entering them and having her abilities cancelled.

The Mios is just fun overall.

Saryn... I never used her much before the rework, and I haven't used her at all afterwards, whereby she now takes three buttons to use instead of one. So I can't really speak for her. I imagine she's still powerful, just harder to use.

Hehe, the other day there was someone in the region chat channel demanding - rather rudely - that someone just give him a Lotus Kubrow so he could make a youtube video. He promised he'd name-drop the donor in the video as compensation.

...needless to say, his wish went unfulfilled. :p

It wouldn't be a total stretch to say an 6 Forma'd Lato could be a viable weapon for a large majority of the game.
And here I considered myself lucky to get my hands on one Forma to build my Twin Grakata. Gotta say I'm liking them so far, but god damn do they burn through ammo like it's going out of style.

Mods get STUPIDLY expensive near the end-game.
I take that as meaning there's a place where I can go to buy mods for credits? If so, could you point me in its direction? I've been farming Corpus excavations for Swirling Tiger stance, but I haven't had any luck yet.

Edit: Ty for all the other tips, too.
(I feel strange [posting again after so long)

Someone probably already explained this but in case they didn't...

First if you need more forma I reccomend tier 2 void tower survival. Every five minutes in survival you get a reward and in those missions a potential rank A reward is a forma blueprint. You recieve tier rewards in this order A A B C repeat, meaning you could recieve a blueprint every 5 and ten minute mark.

Second no you can't buy mods (well you can trade for them but you can't trade credits, and baro ki tier sells special prime mods every other friday but you need prime dollars (sorry ducats) for those as well as huge numbers of credits (you can sell him prime components at the relays to get prime dollars). What the original poster is referring to is fusion cost You can fuse mods together to make them more powerful. This is incredibly important to getting good gear so be sure to do it. For example a rank 0 serration increases base damage by 15%, whereas a rank 10 serration increases it by 165%. Each mod has a number of times it can be ranked up (3, 5, or 10) and a rarity. The rareity determines how much fusion energy a mod requires to be ranked up and every time you rank up the next rank will require double the previous one's energy cost. This can stack up really fast and can take a huge amount of mods and credits to max out rank 10 mods. To make the process a bit easier use fusions cores to rank up since they generally offer the most energy per mod fused (and they have no other use anyway.) Not all mods are equal in the fusion energy they offer either. Rarer mods provide more energy and mods of the same polarity as what they're being fused to offer more than non matching polarities. Duplicate mods provide the most energy for fusion. One more thing if you can't wait to get a mod to it's max rank you can trade for a full rank one from other players (be prepared to pay a fortune in plaitnum though) or get a legendary fusion core which instantly maxes out a md at no credit cost. You can get these from completing the daily sorties (only very rarely though) or trading with another player (you're going to pay a small fortune in platinum though.)

I made a lot of progress last night. Got my first Archwing underway, managed to find all 3 pieces of Valkyr in only 5 tries, so those should be ready by the time I get home from work. Then I've got to wait three fucking days for the Warframe itself to assemble? God....DAMN! They really, really just want you to say "fuck it" and buy everything with platinum. :p

Also I decided to go after a whip for my melee weapon, specifically the Atterax [http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Atterax] because it's got good crits, I've already got a polarity-matching stance for it, and according to the wiki if you're using a whip with Valkyr and you use Hysteria it looks like she has a tail, adding to her cat-like imagery. :3

Also, also: I found the blueprints for Nova Prime...now I just need to find the blueprints for the pieces.

Sounds good, and thanks for pointing that out. In looking through the wiki and reading posts in this topic, it seems like Forma are incredibly important (for obvious reasons...halving the cost of mods on your gear means more mods on higher mod-levels). Right now I'm still just gathering up gear for what I want to be my main setup, but soon I'll have to start farming those Formas and after how much trouble it was just getting one of the things it's nice to know there's a good place to get a decent farm going.

As for the mods explanation: yeah, someone already broke that down for me. And it wasn't long before I saw the effects in-game either. Tried upgrading stuff on my Dual Heat Swords and quickly saw that the fusion price was getting higher and higher. Now I'm more-or-less broke. xP

It's got the farming tag on Steam for a reason.

That said, my main frame will always be Rhino. I've got the legacy Vanguard helmet for it, so it's one of the fastest frames out there and has a stupid amount of shield. (if they haven't removed it, anyway.)

Honestly though, I've found a lot of the "super hard endgame content" to be, well, kinda lackluster if you've got a group. Only ran into a a well once against the then new Mech-Hek or whatever the battle suit guy was, and that only happened because literally everybody in the group was ranking up new weapons at the time.

When I'm feeling petty, I've got a one forma Burston (with great mods) I just go wreck things for fun with.

EDIT: oh, right, actual advice. Any weapon set, ultimately, can do the job. Find stuff you're going to enjoy the sound of for 30 hours.

Unless you plan to invest A LOT of real money into the game I recommend not to buy mods (except for Life Strike cause fuck farming that one).

You can find Berserker in Tower missions and Focus Energy in Nightmare Alerts (clear all nodes on a planet and you can do Nightmare missions). The Primed mods come with Baro Ki'Teer, a trader who comes to the Relays (player hub, you need MR5 to access them, iirc) every 2 weeks on Friday, same with Voltaic Strike and Tempo Royale. You can get Virulent Scourge from T4 missions by killing the T4 exclusive boss (*spoilers*). Vicious Frost can be found in Spy Vaults, you're gonna have to check the wiki to see in which planet you can find it though, can't remember OTOH.

Dragon Nikana and Mios are among the best melee weapons and, imo, feel really satisfying to use.

You want Nova, Prime or normal, doesn't 'matter [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CdVTCDdEwI]'.

But if you want the 'kittie' look, get the Bastet helm and Gersemi Skin, these together will give you the kittie look you desire. As for the wait times ...

Yeah, those suck early on, like really bad. Even still, I DO NOT advise rushing the build for anything. MASSIVE waste of plat. Plat (which you should get anyway) is better spent on Weapon and Warframe slots, (or the Weapon or Warframe it self if your feeling lazy) and Cosmetic stuff really.

Don't buy the Mod Core packs ether. There are Dark Sectors that give 5 star rare cores in packs of 5 in the first reward tier 99% of the time. Don't buy the Credit packs ether, cause if your farming dark Sectors for cores, your gonna be rolling in creds in no time.

Boosters are fine, cause some times RNG is a *****, and there's nothing wrong with more XP and cred drops.

That actually brings up a question I've been meaning to ask...to assemble a Warframe, do all the pieces need to "match"? For example, I found the Saryn Hemlock Helmet...do I need the rest of the Hemlock set in order to assemble the warframe? Or can I assemble it with the Hemlock Helmet and the regular Chasis and Systems?

Yeah, as much as I want to rush it I'm not going to (I do have a very modest amount of Platinum...one of my daily bonuses was 20% off buying platinum so I went ahead and got a bit). I've currently got 160 and I'm debating saving it until I can firmly make up my mind or splurging and blowing it all on buying Formas.

Then again, the Loki warframe is only 75, so I've been thinking about picking that up as well since a number of videos I've watched on the game seem to indicate that he's pretty good due to his invisibility.

The Hemlock Helm is a cosmetic item, so no, you can't use it in place of the normal one, you'll have to go punch the boss in the face till you get the helm BP.

Loki's kit makes him OP to the point of making the game not fun, but he is REALLY mod dependent to get there. He is a really good Frame, but I prefer Ivara to him far as stealth frames go.

hehe, yeah, you'll find you burn though a TON of Forma once you really start getting into the high ranked mods. SPEAKING OF MODDING. Any one explain 'potatoing' your gear yet? cause if you haven't you should.

Which leads to the follow-up question of how the cosmetics work. I'm guessing that there's a full Hemlock set that I'll have to find to build the full Hemlock Saryn warframe? That is to say: there's no mixing-and-matching between set pieces?

Edit: Huh, well in looking up where to find the Bastet helm for my Valkyr, it looks like I received my answer. You build the base warframe, then build the cosmetic piece (helm, in this case) which you can then swap onto the frame in the arsenal. Is that a correct interpretation of how the cosmetics work? End Edit

Any one explain 'potatoing' your gear yet? cause if you haven't you should.
Nope. Please elaborate. :)

Gotta say I do like that look more than the base appearance...I'll have to hunt down the pieces for it sometime, but right now I'm just trying to get myself situated with a couple warframes and a few weapons in each category to choose from, cosmetics can come later. :p
