Huh. Now I'm glad I only own "Dark Crusade", regardless of the narrator's voice. Still, I've always wanted to see how that hive-minded race and the Dark Eldar play in the video game. Detailed and entertaining review! Success!

Um, I like it, but am unlikely to finish it as I did Dark Crusade (every race too - was fun, saved Space Marines to last)

That review kinda put me off getting Soulstorm. The original DoW was the first RTS game i played without cheating and i thought it was awesome! Dark Crusade was the best yet and i really liked the meta-map and the Tau. I havent tried Soulstorm yet, but from this review, I doubt I will any time soon.
No persistent bases? That's sad. That was one of the parts that made the DC campaign fun and realistic. Without it, i doubt i would have wanted to finish the campaign. Playing the same goddamned map over and over again even with persistent bases is a bit boring =P. If thats whats happenin in Soulstorm, i won't get it.
As i said, I havent tried Soulstormthe voice acting in Dawn of War has always been excellent. Its cheesy, but its terrific (I really loved the individual amount of effort directed at each single units voice acting). It is really that shitty, i'm definitely not trying the game.
One other thing i have against the campaign (and one reason why i didnt buy it) are the air units. From what I've seen, each race (excluding Necrons) get onli one air unit. Which doesnt seem to do much. It sounds like some half-assed attempt to inject new flavor into the game. Plus, they didnt even add new units. Come on, if they want to add air units, couldnt they at least make them viable and more interesting, instead of making them look like last-minute add-ons to the game. Or alternatively, they could add in new units.
Soulstorm is the last game in the Dawn of War series. Relic may be working on the new DW2, but couldnt they at least give us a good, fun game, one last game to end the first series with a bang instead of pushing to some developer who cant get it right?

(P.S, i havent tried Soulstorm yet, this is just based on what i've heard of the game's system and from other people who've tried the game)

I love Dow but as seems to be the general opinion here i was very underwhelmed by soulstorm, it felt rushed & i don't think they playtested it at all the balance is terrible, bring on Dow2 and i really hope they aren't cheap about it and make us by a race or 2 at a time again.

The odd part is the honour guard.
The Honour Guard is one of the more blatant ways in which the computer cheats. It will obtain units you could never have, it will obtain them for free, it will obtain them again every time they die and it will obtain them regardless of territory claimed. They will descend upon your garrisoned territories and instantly initiate a rush on your defenceless or almost-defenceless base.
However, the computer's honour guard units are just bog standard units, rather than the super-special-awesome honour guard units you get.

Some of the HG units are bugged though, and take up cap when they shouldn't. Also, the Necron regional power doesn't seem to work. It's supposed to have a 33% chance of resurrecting a dead HG unit, but never seemed to do so (and that's not terribly useful anyway, not compared to the IG, SoB, and SM powers)

Also, whilst persistent bases are gone, the advantages the computer used to get in starting construction and resources are gone as well.

Probably the best proof that this game is a rushed "mod" is when playing the Chaos campaign. When you upgrade the commander to a daemon prince, it says that Eliphas the Inheritor ascends, not Firestarter Dinobot-Wannabe (or w/e his name is). Also, the banner that shows after you conquer an enemy stonghold is the Word Bearers, not the Alpa Legion.
Also, all his select quotes are the same as Eliphas.

But then, no-one uses the Daemon Prince ascension anyway, because it gimps the Chaos Lord hard, losing the Helm of Alpharius, Banner of Chaos, and warp fire ability, and about 30% of his DPS.

Been playing the campaign with Marines for a week or 2 now and all was going well... or so I thought (when you accept that the computer is a cheating bastard!) Ive been playing the game on Hard mode and although its been a little tough at times and even more time consuming ,I
kept playing until tonight!

The Sisters of Battle territory (level10)seems to have 3! (THREE!!!)bases as their defenses! FFS!!! I mean COME ON! i can kill one base pretty quickly using every bit of req i have along with the extra drop troops that the marines get but the other 2 get fully built up and completely stoomp the shite out of me!

its testical twistingly annoying! why oh why does a game designer do this? its not smart, its not endearing, its just FOOKING head wreaking!

I realise now (thanks to this thread) how the sisters get so many melta weapons so quickly and hammer me so quickly, also it explains the 10 rhinos generally annoying me and the fleet of air craft pounding me like im a dead seal!

oh and the space marine commanders melta gun does not work, its another fix needed... its a noisey flash light!

all in all , i think the review is generous... im not a happy camper, thanks SoulStorm for wasting SO MUCH of my time only to tell me to piss off and accept such a crappy expansion.

2/5 for SoulSucker

i only really have a few problems with this "game". first of all, i agree with many of you that it feels like a mod thrown together instead of an actual game. easily noticeable things like the chaos lord whats-his-face looking and sounding EXACTLY like Eliphas the Inheritor from Dark Crusade.

the AI begins the matches with hundreds of buildings and elite troops for me to defend against with my small band of weak tier 1 rabble and no buildings, which i had when i fought there last time. (how am i supposed to repel a full on assault of Dark Eldar warp beasts and an entire fully equiped army after less than thirty seconds of play?!?!)

Garrison buildings and troops.

Also, the AI only starts with a tier 1 base in Soulstorm, it's advantage in early manpower from Dark Crusade has been toned down massively. When it's attacking you, it's only honour guard units you have to worry about, and they only build up large honour guards right at the end.

I'm not really into this genre of games, but the review was well written. Well done.

Thanks. Anyway, Relic are still no closer to releasing either a patch or a "hotfix", and it took a community-developed mod to put persistent bases back into the game (Thank you, Incarnate!) where they belong. Now if only the rest of the game was finished...

The biggest problem I had with this game was the abysmal load time on the main screen. It's not just my comp, I mean dark crusade worked fine, and I play a fairly top of the range machine, but honestly 3+minutes for the meta map to start? Come on!

Having been a competative DoW player i feel you could have touched upon the multiplayer aspects of the game a little more, however you hit the nail on the head more or less about the single player campaign.
It's unfortunate that SS came out as it did, i for one found myself horrendously bored of the game after only a few weeks of play.

Good review fella.

While I would have liked to review things such as race balance and whatever other topics many multiplayer fans hold an interest in, I can't start venting bile without knowing what I'm aiming for. I'm just not a competitive gamer, especially when a game has exploits such as the one that causes players to kick SoB players on sight, a bug that deprives Eldar players of all of their resources and an exploit that allows Necron players what I remember as being infinite Monoliths.

Note To Self: Do not EVER use flying units...Seriously, I cannot describe how pissy these things are, me and my brother actually put a hole through the Game Warrior laptop that we have, sorry, had after we tried to use the bloody air units.

i disagree, mobility and a powerful array of weapons (dark eldar at least) make them formidable.

i play dark eldar (not out of 'oh new ones!' but a preference for mobility) and the Raven is a key part of the arsenal, they can shred infantry, protect areas, respond to a huge area of operations and move fast enough to hunt or escape any foe. Between them, jetbikes, scourges and hellions (to a lesser extent, witches in raiders), i can play an army that is able to move like lightning and hit twice that hard.
