Better yet, get into table top roleplaying, you then only need a handful of figures and the rules can be taught as you go along. Get Dark Heresy and you can go with your WH40K interest.

Painting will get easier as you go along a good way to go is to undercoat 10 models, paint the main areas on them first chest, back, legs, arms with your main colour. Then move onto your your second colour (mine was black, for the joints in space marine shoulders, arms and legs and I painted the kneepads and shoulder pads aswell) then paint things like weapons pouches grenades atc... you'll get faster the more you do.

The game itself is not that hard to learn at all, I'm serious once you get your head around the conconcepts of it like move, shoot, assault, morale etc you'll be laughing. They also make sense, example if your moving through boggy ground with a tank it could get stuck or things like that. The problem comes when you factor in all the races and the amount of rules for each type of model then commanders etc... it can get a bit messy. You seem to like the game and the whole fantasy thing so I'm sure you wont have any trouble getting your head around it.

I read the 3rd edition of the rules back when I was 12 and I didnt find it much trouble at all so you should be ok. Oh and about games workshop, yes they are pretty protective of their copyright.

What army are you thinking of collecting btw?

And don't forget that every warhammer player will try to tell you that their army is the best there is.
As demonstrated by those Eldar pansies here.

Because we all know Orks are by far the best. WAAAAGH!

40k is something you have to sink a massive amount of time into...and hope you don't get screwed by GW. GW might choose not to update your chosen army for many years (Dark Eldar got about nothing for 10 years after they first came out), or drop them from the game completely. Or drop the models you happen to own (various Imperial Guard tanks were introduced, had models sold, but were removed from the game until recently). Or the models exist, but the rules for them change so they aren't an effective army anymore. Or the background of your army change away from what you liked.

To be safe, I'd recommend getting marines. Marines can be very boring, because everyone gets them, the majority of GW's income came from marine stuff, or so I was told. But because of this, marines will always be catered to, at the expense of everyone else.

Marines are also easy to use, and easy to collecct and paint.

Thanks for the painting tips! Much appreciated! And which army? Well I'm sorry to admit but I like the spacemarine stuff as mainstream as they are. I just really like the desing of the figures and the over the top backround they have. Now on gameplay i cant comment on but them being included in the starter package is a definite plus!

The rules for 40k require a weekend-long course, a lengthy presentation and enough coffee to send an elephant running the speed of a cheetah in order to explain how the close combat mechanic works, with all the variables.

At least the current edition's cover mechanic is simpler than the previous one, where to see through 'area terrain' you needed to roll a D6 and that was how far into the cover you could see, and then you had to take into account how strong the cover was, and add on top of that base D6 roll all the variables such as going to ground, or if the unit's armour was worth more or AAAAAAAARGH!!!

If you're gonna subscribe to an army, choose one based on the style and how it reflects your personality rather than how many bonuses and the power it puts out per unit points. I've heard so much b****ing about people buying up on OP armies and using bugs and griefing tactics in tabletop gaming to think that it's any different from online multiplayer gaming.

So yeah, go nuts, be creative and tactical but don't be a dick; no gamer likes being dicked.

Oh, and the obligatory plug of my Wraithlord pic on here:

That's one sexy Wraithlord! Puts mine to shame.

Good to see other Eldar players, my housemates play Space Marines and 'nids, so I never get to see what a well-painted Eldar army looks like because I'm a ham fisted, butter fingered moron.

Personally, I read the full rule book, cover to cover, in half a day, learned the rules pretty well in the remainder of the day, been playing it for two years now, and even now, there are some fun little rules that suprise me, its one hell of a game.

Tau are long range specialists, their ranged fire power is second to none.
I'd have to point that out as not incredibly valid anymore, seeing as the tau have the same balistic skill as the guard.

I just can't wait for the Talos/Kronos models to come out, I've got some ideas for conversions that should be fun!

If that 40k thread is still going I'll pop up my Archon/Incubus pictures when they're done, this new range is fantastic.
Nice! I've got a squad of Shadow Spectres and an Exarch coming in the post, which is going to be sweet as hell.

First off, I wasn't sure if I should put this into gaming discussion since I'm talking about a tabletop game. So exscuse me if this is in the wrong place.

I have been in contact to the Warhammer 40K universe through the videogames etc. and now I have become very curious of the table top game. I think myself as an artistic person, and while not much good in painting, I find painting those figures cool. But painting over 50 figures (Which the starting kit contains), I dont think I have enough motivation to do if the game itself isin't my thing afterall. So I know that the game is really complex, and I tried to search for the rules on the internet. Then I found out that Games Workshop is trying to keep the games rules out of the web in order to sell more rule books (Which cost a whopping 50 euros themselves). The real problem isin't me learning the rules, but to me to teach somebody else them in order to have a friend to play with. So I wish to ask, how long would it take for me to teach someone the basic rules of the game, so we could get a couple of puny games going. (After I have learned the rules well) And yes I believe I do have a couple of friends that could be interested to play the game, if the rules arent impossibly hard to learn.
It'll take probably one game to teach someone the most basic rules, and that goes for all three games (40k, Fantasy, and LOTR). I remember learning the basic rules by heart pretty much after one game of Battle for Macragge (back in the old days when that was the starter kit), and last week I learnt the basic rules of the LOTR game through a single skirmish with about ten models (three Gondor soldiers and a few goblins) in a ten-minute game in my local Games Workshop. It really is that easy to get into it at first.

Bear in mind though, the more advanced rules, and knowing things like exactly when you can fire at someone in cover, exactly what saves you need to roll, dice tables and stuff, are all a bit more difficult, and usually you probably will need the rule-book with you when you battle (I know that's how it was at my old school, at least). The basic rules are easy as hell, though.

Finally, if you can't find a friend to play with, then I highly recommend you simply go to your nearest Games Workshop and spend a fair bit of time in there. I've been to my local one twice now, in the past week, just browsing since I left all my old models back home when I came to university (I collected Tau, by the way). And in those two brief visits I've been starting to make friends with one guy who works there, who taught me the LOTR basics and gave some recommendations on how best to restart my Tau army while in my current city. So if you want to find people to play with, just keep going to your local store, and make friends with the staff and other regulars, and you'll soon have friends to play the game with, as well as improving your social network too :D.

No problem, I actually got those painting tips from a friend that collected Imperial Guard so he had 2 or 3 times the amount of models to paint that I had. The only place where they will leave you down is tanks as they tend to be rather light on ordanance weapons.

Theres nothing wrong with picking Space Marines either, they're popular because they appeal to people imo. It's not an alien that your controlling (or whatever you call it) but a man. They're also a briliant starter army and as you have higher points value models you will end up spending less money to field a battle worthy army. Another example involving my friend that collected Imperial guard he had to spend ?40-45 to make a full squad of Stormtroopers as they were metal at the time. Where as I spent about ?25-30 buying a squad of terminators that would reduce his stormtroopers to a bloddy pulp hehehe!

Space Marines are a good choice for a first time warhammer painter too. Their armour makes them pretty easy to paint as they have smooth surfaces and generally dont have clothing like men and arent knotted in muscle like orks so its a lot less fidly.

Happy gaming anyway =D

if theres a GW shop near you they sometimes have free games for you to have a go on with the staff or other people as a taste, the one in glasgow does at least
