They made it pretty clear you can't be a Space Marine from the get go, and if you play as the Imperium you start out as a regular human.
Woah, I mustve missed that bit. Thanks for the update.
Anyhow, youre telling me that space marines, the poster boys for the entirety of Warhammer 40k, are unplayable?
Wait, what about in the Trailer where they show space marines trudging around blowing shit up? Have I been LIED TO?!?
I'll just extract the part of Yokai's response that will answer your question.

Personally I'm more concerned about the factions in the game. An early press release stated that allegiances would be split down two ways, Order and Destruction. This caused my inner 40k fanboy to rage, as alliances between factions is nearly unheard of. Yes the Imperium has joined forces with the Eldar and Tau on occasion to fight a common enemy, but once that's taken care of they go right back to slaughtering each other.
Especially with the races who's prime goal in life is 'Extinguish all other life'

Im looking at you Necrons and 'Nids!
And Imperium, and Space Marines, and Dark Eldar, and Orks (for teh lulz, mostly)...

its all these things that ensures nobody actually get the upper hand and drags the war on and on.
Well you're forgetting one race, the Tyranids, whose conquest of the galaxy is all but sealed.

I always played Tyranid tabletop so I would be severely disappointed if they didn't have playable 'nids (even if only some kind of rogue tainted brood). Playing as a Genestealer and shredding things would be too much fun.

Unfortunately its going to be the Skaven thing all over again. I didn't touch the Warhammer online either because they cut my favorite/tabletop races.

What are your opinions, you extravagant beasts?
Side A plays as loyalist marines.
Side B plays a chaos legionaries.
Then they both get a quest to fetch 20 squig spleens on their respective planets.

Canonically, they are even more effective. A single company (about 100 marines) is considered enough to pacify a system of planets. A full chapter (1000 marines) can lay waste to a sector of planets.
That is when they're not getting their shit kicked in by the thousands by purple monkeys with heatseeking arrows. Or crying themselves to sleep over not having blue armor. Or getting lost aboard their own ship. Or getting lost with their own ship. Or getting their ass kicked in 1v1 melee by a regular human. Or deploying in force to take on 100 baneblades, none of which show up, then failing anyway.

All of these events are canon.
