Greetings.

I've often found myself, when perusing the shelves of a Games Workshop, admiring many of the models up for offer, and so I thought I'd put this little thread together to find out if people share my opinions, and to discuss what people see as their favourite Warhammer Fantasy and 40000 units.

Your favourite unit isn't limited to, say, design, although I daresay that'll be a large part of it.

For example, my favourite unit, based on design, is a toss-up between the Medusa Schism special model of Captain Sicarius of the Ultramarines, and the new Lord Commissar model. I like Sicarius because of the story that's locked in that model. Like, what could possibly have scarred his armour like that, or what did that to his eye? In contrast, the Lord Commissar exudes a powerful aura of fear - that model could just as easily be aiming at an insurboniate Guardsman or a foul traitor. In fact, it's everything a Commissar should be, if a tad flamboyant.

However, my favourite unit in game is neither of the above. My favourite in game unit is the humble Assault Marine squad, mostly because of how fun and unpredictable they've been for me in games. I have a tendency to arm as many Marines as I can with plasma pistols, which has lead to some glorious Assault Marine charges that falter due to two Marines blowing their own brains out with superheated plasma!

And finally, my favourite unit to convert is stuck as either the Chaos Marine, or basic Guardsman. This is because, firstly, they're plastic and, therefore, very easy to mess around with, but secondly because they have (or can have, in the case of a Guardsman) a link to Chaos, which opens up a myriad of conversion possibilities, as the corruption and mutation from Chaos is endless.

Now, I admit all my models are from the 40000 range, but that's because, first and foremost, I'm a 40000 player, rather than a Fantasy Battler, but feel free to wax lyrical about Fantasy Battle as well.

So, do share - What's your favourite Warhammer model and why?

Oh, and if you're going to post pictures, could you spoiler them please? For the sake of browsing the thread, you understand.

Design-wise is really hard for me to say, since I love most of the figures, but I'd have to say the Death Korps of Krieg set of guardsmen really is the most attractive. Just today, I visited our friendly neighbourhood store for models and managed to find some troopers for sale and I have to say that they really are the best guardsmen models out there. At least, for me. The uniforms are incredibly well-designed, originating from the world wars, while still being relatively original and completely fitting with the atmosphere of 40K. The gas masks are also incredibly made, traditionally, at least, with skull patterns that truly reveal the spirit of the Death Korps and their nihilistic views. When seeking several rows of skulls and dirty, gray troops marching, you can't help but feel a little depressed.

In game, my favourite unit is the guardsman. After trying my Steel Legion/Space Marine army against Orks a couple of days ago, I can safely say that the guardsman is a very versatile unit that has helped me both from long-range, taking out ork grunts, and from close range, where they successfully routed and destroyed a 5-strong squad of Nobz. (Mostly due to luck, but still).

And as for converting, I'm between the guardsman and the humble Ork. But, I probably have to go with the ork. There's a bit of a story behind it. A friend of mine bought an ork army, but decided that he didn't like them and switched to chaos. After that, we considered shelving the Ork army, but after one brilliant strike of a match, and a lot of painting later, I had successfully helped him convert Orks into Chaos Orks. Using my space marine and guardsman bits and his chaos marine bits, we managed to create a better looking group of red-skinned orks that have plenty of space marine and guardsman trophies. Some of th wear Space marine shoulder pads and backpacks, others have chaos spikes and shoulderpads with guardsman heads hanging off. Lots of gold too.

Most fun I've ever had.

Anyway, that was a pretty long monologue. So yes, those are my favourite models in the three criteria you mentioned, I think.

I'll go with the tyranid carnifex. I would post a pic but I don't know how. :(

There's a couple others that I really like the look of but I can't remember the names. I guess I got some research to do.

Grey Knights

They're space marines designed to fight daemons. They're the coolest thing outside the black templars.

Conversion wise my favourite model is the defiler, normal design wise would have to be the eldar fire prism as it is just so elegant and finally rules wise tzeentch lord on disc of tzeentch with a daemon weapon as it is really bloody devastating if used correctly and with a bit of luck.

Daemon Prince.... It was the only unit I was sad to see go when I sold my army. Took me forever to pain him as well. Though you know he's badass when he has space marine heads and necron skulls for trophys lol. That sword kicks some serious ass as well.

I like the Necron destroyer lord for the rules it has as well as the Monolith due to its ability to brace itself against most anti-tank weapons.

though my personal favorites would be the Necron immortals and the Eldar Wraith guards and Wraith lords.

<-- This bloke.
"The image of an Emperor's Champion striding across the battlefield is a sight that makes all but the most foolish creature fall back in fear." Pretty sweet tbh.

I love chaos spawn. The fluff, the models, the way they play, they're just too damn awesome.

In Warhammer Fantasy; Sword Masters of Hoeth. They're a hard unit that packs a punch and always strikes first! Wahey!

in Warhammer 40,000 you can never go wrong with the Wraithlord. They exemplify the Eldar way of war. In battle they hit like a mack truck and can take the worst fire in return. True, they can't (as reliably) sit on their own anymore, but that's just a good reason to have a Farseer lurking nearby; another unit I would never say no to.

Honorable mentions go to the Autarch (a beautiful addition to the Eldar army, both in character and combat effective) and Dark Raper-- I mean Dark Reapers. When most of the enemies you fight are T4 3+ save marines (chaos/grey knight/loyalist, whatever) nothing says loving like a face full of AP3 missiles.

Bonus cookies if you guess what my favorite armies are <.<

Nobz! they epitomize orks: they're big, green, tough, and covered in random chunks of metal.

*edit*
the ork vehicles they haven't updated are full of fail, though.

Gah, tell me about it! Metal models are the bane of my life when it comes to conversion, but I think, overall, they're definitely worth it, especially as amazing centerpieces in an army.

Images are easy! =) Just put the url of the image in between these tags: [ img] and [/img ], without the spaces. Like this:

In terms of Fantasy, I have to admit for having a soft spot for these guys:

I never owned a army of units, however after playing some of the games the Necron Lord is my favorite character hands down.

Now I have went to places looking into buying a few units to paints just to keep with my action figures...but they cost so damn much.

In 40k, the Baneblade rules. I've got the armageddon model, and it's awesome. So far it has blasted aside everything. Carnifexes (those are awesome too, I've got 2), Nightbringers, monoliths, bloodthirsters, anything. IG Kasrkin are my favourite infantry unit.
In fantasy battle the Bretonnian Trebuchet. I've got 2 of them. The model is brilliant and it's very powerful in the game. Dark elven heroes are cool too.

My old Dark Eldar Talos. That is the single most dangerous unit I've ever seen on the field. It butchered a whole unit of Grey Knights, including their Dreadnought, and during a three-way battle between the Space Wolves, Ultramarines and Dark Eldar, it quite brutally seperated each unit in three ways. :)
