Was Anyone Else Kind of Disappointed in Skyward Sword?

So, before I get into this, I am only currently in the Lanayru Sand Sea hunting for the Sacred Flames and have yet to totally beat the game, but according to my younger sibling I'm already well over halfway through the story.

I find myself to be somewhat disappointed in this game. It seems like they cut out so much from the other games that I found nice.

Sky is the limit, but the sky is limited.

At first I was greatly excited about finally being able to fly around on my Loftwing after that tutorial was finally over. "Zelda's in trouble? TIME TO KICK SOME ASS." Imagine my great disappointment when I dicovered I had basically already seen all that the overworld in the sky had to offer before even getting free control over where I could fly.

Besides Skyloft, there is only one other place to go, and that's the Lumpy Pumpkin. I suppose you could count the Bamboo grove and Fun Fun Island, but those are just minigames. What? Nintendo, what the hell happened to all the adventuring and free-romaing I could do in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess? Instead all you gave me was a few random chunks of floating rock, with a few that I could land on. You had an entire SKY to fill and yet you only gave me a single town in the entire game? Is Skyloft all that remains of the human race? Because if so, there must have been some insane inbreeding and population management to sustain the population. I suppose that explains this kid.

HUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

The game world seems vastly smaller than previous titles. And there is far less to explore, at least in finding little random easter eggs and things like TP and Wind Waker. I could literally spend hours sailing in WW and keep finding new islands and things on the sea to explore that were not part of the main quest.

I've had my fill of the boring characters already. Ugly little robots, ugly little jellyfish/squid thing, and ugly little Crash Bandicoot Mole People. And for some reason, there's still a Goron or two in the game, just for the sake of being there.

If you've got the damn Goron, where are my Zora? The Water Dragon even had the face of a Zora, and yet her subjects are some little throwaway squid creatures whose name I cannot remember? And where in the hell are my Deku? I've been waiting for my plant bros to reappear since Majora's Mask with no luck. You even have Deku Babas in the game, but no Dekus?

And what happened to character interaction in the story? Girahim shows up for all of five seconds to give his generic, "I'm evil, and I can hurt you, and I'm gonna summon my master, now fight this boss," speech every time I reach a boss room, but that's all. I've talked to Zelda for maybe a total of five minutes in the entirety of the game. I don't even care about Zelda, I've got nothing to go on but the fact that apparently she and Link have some awkward unspoken love for one another in the game that is alluded to before the adventure starts. Girahim is just another big-talk flunky who will ultimately succeed in summoning his master only for me to cast him back into the depths of oblivion at the end (probably by stabbing him).

I don't care about Fi at all, and that's no good. I actually cared about Tatl, Navi, Midna, and the King of Red Lions. They were there constantly, they had personality, they provided answers and comments to people to make up for Link not speaking, or to fill in any questions we may have. Fi has no personality, and is only there an a somewhat frustrating tool who talks too much. I know that the McGuffin of Might is hidden here, you stupid AI, that's why we came to this location in the first place. Seriously, it's gotten to the point where the only time I actually read what she is saying is when I specifically ask her for a hint when I am stuck. I skip through all of her speech. I should NOT want to SKIP THROUGH DIALOGUE THAT I HAVE NOT READ BEFORE, NINTENDO. This just shows how much she annoys me. It's like Nintendo figures the players are too stupid to understand that the item they need is inside the temple, so-

"*SPARKLE* MASTER, THE ITEM YOU NEED IS INSIDE THE TEMPLE, LOCKED IN A ROOM, IN A BLUE CHEST. I SUGGEST YOU GO INTO THE TEMPLE, TO THAT LOCKED ROOM, AND FIGHT THE MINIBOSS, SO THAT YOU MAY RECIEVE THAT ITEM, IN THE ROOM, IN THE BLUE CHEST, AND USE THAT ITEM TO PROGRESS FURTHER INTO THE TEMPLE, THROUGH MULTIPLE LOCKED ROOMS, TO FIND THE BOSS KEY, WHICH IS IN A BIG PURPLE MENACING CHEST, AND OPEN THE BOSS DOOR, WHICH HAS A LOCK ON IT THAT IS THE EXACT SHAPE OF THAT KEY. THEN, SLAY THE BOSS USING YOUR SWORD, NOT YOUR FISTS, MASTER, AS THOSE WOULD NOT HARM IT, YOU MUST USE YOUR SWORD, WHICH IS-"

You get what I mean.

And is it ever explained why suddenly there's a singular Godess as opposed to the three of the Triforce? Does this single Goddess create Lanayru, Din, and Farore at the end? Seriously, someone can tell me that, because I just want to know why the three Goddesses are mentioned repeatedly in area names and songs, and yet there has not been any mention of the actual three being Goddesses, instead there's only the ugly goddess angel statue.

Yeah I agree what you had said-

It does make me wonder that did the Goddess just basically just send a village full of people into the sky? Honestly if I knew how lifeless the sky was going to be, I would gladly take the sea from Wind Waker any day despite that I have to manually change the wind direction.
I also hate the fact that the three main locations below the sky are section off from each other and the lame attempt to prolong the game (you will encounter this later on).
Abit of a spoiler but there are less dungeons compare to the previous games like Wind Waker.

Oh, I've already been through the Forest again and am currently back in the desert. The backtracing is already quite evident, but I expect I'll need to revisit the places again for something, correct?

I was rolling my eyes when I had to go all the way back through the Skyview Temple section just to get a bottle of water for that ugly dragon.

You are never the only one, that should be something the internet has taught everyone by this point.

That being said, I wasn't disappointed in Skyward Sword in the slightest. In fact, I would say it's my favorite Zelda game(Majora's Mask finally had its throne taken).

For the characters/species, one thing to remember is this is MANY years before the other games. There aren't any Hylians at this point even, or at least in name since the world below isn't even called Hyrule yet but even then there are very few. The Goron I can understand having just cropped up since they are essentially evolved stone, but the Deku and the Zora I think would need time to evolve as the world grows.

For the sky, one thing to remember is that for every person who loved sailing to find everything in Wind Waker there was a person who hated it. I've never seen anything else in gaming so equally split before. But this is part of why Nintendo focused on having the sky be the hub world and treasure finding: people who liked the sailing and exploring could still do that, while those who didn't could get by with a minimum amount of flying around the sky.

I can see why people are disappointed in having to go back to previous areas, but I liked that aspect. Especially with how they did the route to the dungeons being a kind of mini-dungeon instead of something like running along a field to get to the area where the dungeon is and just doing simple things like following a path while fighting enemies and doing the occasional puzzle. Each time I returned to an area my brain started thinking about what new things I'm gonna find or what things have changed since last time. Different strokes for different blokes I guess.

Character interaction is there, but I can't comment for everything since I'm still working through the game myself. It just isn't as heavy with Girahim and Zelda as it is with people around Skyloft, at least from what I've seen. For example, you get a good amount of interaction with Pipit and his mother. Through a simple act of cleaning their house, you see the dysfunction that comes from a lazy mother and a son who wants both to provide for his family while also encouraging his mother to be more self reliant around the house. Talking to Peatrice, who runs the item storage, you watch her go from a lady who hates her job to someone who eagerly awaits Link's visits to her shop. There are more around town as well, but these are two that stood out to me.

For easter eggs, there isn't as many subtle things to find but in exchange the story is essentially one big easter egg. After all, you're getting background for the entire Zelda universe in this game. Sure they could've thrown in more hidden call backs, but I feel they didn't need to.

Finally, there's Fi. I liked her, but I know many didn't and that's fine. I found her better than Midna and Navi, and about on par with Tatl after she stops being such a ***** to you. Fi is a personal preference, just like the other partners, and nothing I'm gonna say will change your mind on that.

I doubt I'm gonna change your mind on anything, but maybe seeing it from a different perspective will at the very least show you why other people like it.

This... this is quite literally what I came in here to post.

The only thing that disappointed me was the final boss. EPIC AS FUCK, but not too challenging.

That said, Girahim has gone down as one of my favorite villains of all time. Demise, not so much, but he's still awesome.

I disliked it too. Also it had Fi, she single-handedly stole the title of Worst Support Character Ever from Navi.

I thought that too at first, but she grew on me. I was genuinely sad when she
left Link's presence.

Besides, Navi wasn't that bad to begin with.

Ive enjoyed it but it does feel smaller for the most part, plus Fi sucks, after having the best sidekick ever,
Midna, we get stuck with an annoying robot who is one of the worst side kicks ever.

I started off feeling lame about playing Skyward Sword, but after some part half-way through (Can't tell you exactly where) it randomly decided to grow on me. I found a lot more humor in the characters, I loved how the levels were designed with the soul purpose of repeatedly going through them (differently each time). You begin to get intimate with those areas. The island in the sky no longer felt like just a drop-off point.

And I enjoyed most of the mini games. Especially the arrow-shooty pumpkin one and the bug-chasing one. My least favorite, btw, is the LumpyPumpkin harp/singing... As it's impossible to get a good applause.

Crud, even the main villian no longer freaked me out after a point.

And once I was done with the game, I had a really hard time saying no to hard mode.

Yep. Midna was fantastic. God, I love Twilight Princess so much. So many fun Darknut fights.

OT: Skyward Sword was good. It's probably #3 for me among the 3D Zeldas (Twilight Princes > Ocarina > Skyward Sword > Wind Waker > Majora's Mask). It has some pretty great dungeons, I thought. But I'm not a fan of the Skyward Sword and Wind Waker style overworld. And there were Metroid levels of backtracking (my least favorite part of that particular series). The timeshift areas were great. Girahim was wonderful. The soundtrack was goddessly. And Groose needs a series all to himself.

Put simply, this is the first Zelda I've played that I've actively hated. I even LOVED Twilight Princess, which a lot of people hated for being weak. I can't care about ANYTHING that happened in Skyward Sword. Also, being treated like a baby retard is annoying as fuck.

I would have had it so that Groose was supposed to be the hero of time and link ended up somehow becoming it, but then again I get really really annoyed by the whole destiny thing, it reeks of bad story telling.

Honestly the thing I found most frustrating was trying to charge my sword by holding the wii controller up. Seriously I hate motion controls :p

I thought skyward sword was a strong entry in the series. the characters are strong (even if groose overshadows everyone else), the gadgets are fun, and the art is pretty. I also like that link is so expressive, he says more in a scowl then most characters say all day. I can't ask for much more.

That said Fi needs to be quiet for a while.

Edit: they later show that hyrulians have much longer lifespans then us, so that fixes some plot holes.

I dunno...

Wind Waker for me was the perfect Zelda. It had great exploration, combat, story, the works. Maybe it's just because the high seas always scream "ADVENTURE!" to me. I always did love the idea of being a pirate and sailing to faraway lands.

One of the things I missed the most from WW and TP though has got to be the unlockable abilities (moreso in TP, but in WW you can get that cyclone attack from Orca). I was vastly disappointed to see all of these Goddess Cubes and treasures, and yet not a single solitary combat ability improvement.

I loved hunting down the howling stones in TP.

First off, Skyward Sword is not my favorite 3D Zelda game. However, I have to like it a lot to justify in my mind the $70 to get the gold controller edition. I like some of the characters (Except Fi, of course), and I like the part at the end. I wont reveal any spoilers until I can figure out how to do that script thing so that you gotta click on the text for the spoilers to appear. This game also made me like Wind Waker more than ever.

Some of the gameplay elements were good, but felt a little tacked on. The dashing part was nice to have, but got old really fast. Definitely needed more to explore. I loved the Timeshift Stones, where it alters time in a radius around you, which doesn't make sense when in the boat.

I had the potential to be the best...

It had some of the best dungeons in the entire series.
Awesome bosses.
One of the better stories, and easily the best villain besides Gannondorf.
Fun combat, even if it wasn't taken to it's fullest potential.
Money is actually useful in this game!
So is your shield!
Hero Mode is actually challenging.

However, it made some stupid choices that stopped it. The backtracking wouldn't have been an issue, but couple that with no method of fast travel, then it's a chore. The song of the hero part was completely pointless, especially the part with the water dragon. And the 3 battles against the worst boss in the game were all awful. The world in the sky was completely empty, and the sidequests were subpar. And Fi... good lord, FI...

I really enjoyed it. It's still one of my favorites. But it's like a masterpiece is dangling right in front of me, but these stupid choices are just holding it back.
