So, before I get into this, I am only currently in the Lanayru Sand Sea hunting for the Sacred Flames and have yet to totally beat the game, but according to my younger sibling I'm already well over halfway through the story.
I find myself to be somewhat disappointed in this game. It seems like they cut out so much from the other games that I found nice.
Sky is the limit, but the sky is limited.
At first I was greatly excited about finally being able to fly around on my Loftwing after that tutorial was finally over. "Zelda's in trouble? TIME TO KICK SOME ASS." Imagine my great disappointment when I dicovered I had basically already seen all that the overworld in the sky had to offer before even getting free control over where I could fly.
Besides Skyloft, there is only one other place to go, and that's the Lumpy Pumpkin. I suppose you could count the Bamboo grove and Fun Fun Island, but those are just minigames. What? Nintendo, what the hell happened to all the adventuring and free-romaing I could do in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess? Instead all you gave me was a few random chunks of floating rock, with a few that I could land on. You had an entire SKY to fill and yet you only gave me a single town in the entire game? Is Skyloft all that remains of the human race? Because if so, there must have been some insane inbreeding and population management to sustain the population. I suppose that explains this kid.
HUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
The game world seems vastly smaller than previous titles. And there is far less to explore, at least in finding little random easter eggs and things like TP and Wind Waker. I could literally spend hours sailing in WW and keep finding new islands and things on the sea to explore that were not part of the main quest.
I've had my fill of the boring characters already. Ugly little robots, ugly little jellyfish/squid thing, and ugly little Crash Bandicoot Mole People. And for some reason, there's still a Goron or two in the game, just for the sake of being there.
If you've got the damn Goron, where are my Zora? The Water Dragon even had the face of a Zora, and yet her subjects are some little throwaway squid creatures whose name I cannot remember? And where in the hell are my Deku? I've been waiting for my plant bros to reappear since Majora's Mask with no luck. You even have Deku Babas in the game, but no Dekus?
And what happened to character interaction in the story? Girahim shows up for all of five seconds to give his generic, "I'm evil, and I can hurt you, and I'm gonna summon my master, now fight this boss," speech every time I reach a boss room, but that's all. I've talked to Zelda for maybe a total of five minutes in the entirety of the game. I don't even care about Zelda, I've got nothing to go on but the fact that apparently she and Link have some awkward unspoken love for one another in the game that is alluded to before the adventure starts. Girahim is just another big-talk flunky who will ultimately succeed in summoning his master only for me to cast him back into the depths of oblivion at the end (probably by stabbing him).
I don't care about Fi at all, and that's no good. I actually cared about Tatl, Navi, Midna, and the King of Red Lions. They were there constantly, they had personality, they provided answers and comments to people to make up for Link not speaking, or to fill in any questions we may have. Fi has no personality, and is only there an a somewhat frustrating tool who talks too much. I know that the McGuffin of Might is hidden here, you stupid AI, that's why we came to this location in the first place. Seriously, it's gotten to the point where the only time I actually read what she is saying is when I specifically ask her for a hint when I am stuck. I skip through all of her speech. I should NOT want to SKIP THROUGH DIALOGUE THAT I HAVE NOT READ BEFORE, NINTENDO. This just shows how much she annoys me. It's like Nintendo figures the players are too stupid to understand that the item they need is inside the temple, so-
"*SPARKLE* MASTER, THE ITEM YOU NEED IS INSIDE THE TEMPLE, LOCKED IN A ROOM, IN A BLUE CHEST. I SUGGEST YOU GO INTO THE TEMPLE, TO THAT LOCKED ROOM, AND FIGHT THE MINIBOSS, SO THAT YOU MAY RECIEVE THAT ITEM, IN THE ROOM, IN THE BLUE CHEST, AND USE THAT ITEM TO PROGRESS FURTHER INTO THE TEMPLE, THROUGH MULTIPLE LOCKED ROOMS, TO FIND THE BOSS KEY, WHICH IS IN A BIG PURPLE MENACING CHEST, AND OPEN THE BOSS DOOR, WHICH HAS A LOCK ON IT THAT IS THE EXACT SHAPE OF THAT KEY. THEN, SLAY THE BOSS USING YOUR SWORD, NOT YOUR FISTS, MASTER, AS THOSE WOULD NOT HARM IT, YOU MUST USE YOUR SWORD, WHICH IS-"
You get what I mean.
And is it ever explained why suddenly there's a singular Godess as opposed to the three of the Triforce? Does this single Goddess create Lanayru, Din, and Farore at the end? Seriously, someone can tell me that, because I just want to know why the three Goddesses are mentioned repeatedly in area names and songs, and yet there has not been any mention of the actual three being Goddesses, instead there's only the ugly goddess angel statue.
