Is that why Doom scored so high as well?
Doom scored 7.1 on IGN. Bioshock infinite score 9.7

former is actual FPS latter is not
You SHOOT in FIRST PERSON. It's a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.

I think it was a great game but it suffered from some questionable design choices. I didn't like being limited to only two weapons, I wasn't a fan of no visual upgrades on weapons like in previous games and I didn't like armor regeneration. The way that enemies spawned in waves was a direct byproduct of gameplay designed around that health system.

But there's a lot more to games than shooting mechanics. Bioshock Infinite provided a pretty unforgettable narrative experience.

Yes. Yes it was, the "worst AAAAAAAAA FPS ever made", and that's, like, totes not hyperbole.

And you, B-Cell, are objectively correct about everything. Discus. Sorry, I meant 'discuss'.

On a possibly less sarcastic/facetious note: regardless of how well it actually played, I did think BI was a rather terribly designed game, with some of the most unambitious and lazy shooter design I've ever played in a game that should've known better (given its pedigree).

For me its core combat became genuinely unpleasant the longer the game went on, and now I look back on it as one of the most disjointed games of the last gen; mostly wonderful writing and narrative (as long as you didn't go looking for anything valuable to say about politics or race, or anything that actually coheres in terms of its concept), with engaging characters (loved Elizabeth and Booker, ditto the twins), yet broken up and saddled with copy-paste combat design that felt like it had been bolted on from another dumber, less well crafted game.

In an alternate dimension, Levine realised BioShock Infinite as something other than a shooter - and that's the version I pined for throughout the duration of 'our' BI.

Frankly, disingenuous compromise was in its very DNA. From its insistence on drab shooter gameplay to its hideously cynical and boring 'White Dude With Gun' cover art (and Levine's remarks about marketing to no-mark dudebros), its beautifully expressive and humanistic qualities were always going to share the limelight with less refined - and arguably contrary - elements.

It's a game I still ostensibly genuinely love for its characters, writing, and presentation - for me it had more heart and soul than most games I've played since the later '80's, and that will always positively distinguish it. But the prospect of actually enduring the combat again makes me very reticent to give it another playthrough.

Actually Infinite was pretty excellent, and the sky-hook mechanics plus the magic powers made for tit loads of fun. Way more than I ever had playing Halo Reach or Painkiller. Not as good as Bioshock 1, but I hold that game to be the greatest game of all time so no surprise there.
On par with Fallout New Vegas I'd say. Not the same mechanics or experience, but an equally fun time.

Put is this way; I don't care about achievements or gamerscore or anything. Bioshock Infinite was the first game I ever 100%ed. Only because I enjoyed playing it sooo much!

Agreed. Personally I found it funny that the OP said it scored better than Half Life 2 (to paraphrase) as if that was shocking in some way. It IS better than Half Life 2. Half Life 2 is not a particularly impressive game, and it wasn't at the time that it launched either (I bought it a little after launch to see what the hype was all about). It was an impressive tech demo for its time, but as a game its pretty unremarkable.

A:CM gets way more criticism than it deserves. Its not brilliant, and it was apparently a bit buggy at launch, but the way people talk about it you'd think that it actually murdered their family. Seemingly mainly because it didn't match up to the trailer that was shown.

There are way, way worse shooters around. By far.

You know, I always had a problem with BI, but could never quite out my finger on it. It felt like I had to will myself through it and you nailed why. The only other complaint I'd have is I had problems with part of the ending, specifically the debt and how Booker paid it. I found it to be a stretch that made me roll my eyes and that's saying something since I deal with parents in real life that are of the lowest caliber.

Infinite ain't good by any stretch (mostly the stiff controls and unlikeable characters), but this is the usual hyperbole.

I won't suggest a worse one like most here, though, because frankly I can't think of what I'd consider the worst. I hate "Halo 4" the most, but it's not an abysmally awful game.

While I would agree that BI was overrated, it isn't the worst. You have the likes of Warfighter, Killzone 3 and a number of others.
but warfighter and killzone 3 score no where near bioshock. infact warfighter panned at critics. i do thikn system shock 3 wont score even close to bioshockn infinite which is perfect reason critics reviews hype over quality.

system shock 3 will not release before 2020 i guess. so next year we will be playing Prey and System shock remake
Because people were scoring it for it's gorgeous level designs, good music, and story, and not for its gameplay? In fact, the gameplay was the most criticized part of the game. It was serviceable, but not great. A game can be great despite having bad shooting mechanics.

Its not the worst, its competent in its mechanics but I find its story and characters and liberal use of "quantum mechanics" to be infuriating plot hole filler. Elizabeth is a modern day Disney princess even though its established she's had minimum contact with the outside world and would most likely be more withdrawn from interactions, Booker constantly does the opposite of what a sensible person would do in his position (cover up your goddamn hand and stay out of the lottery!). I still don't understand how people defend this game's story. So yeah, not the worst but certainly one of the most over hyped, over praised games of last gen.

Ah! Nothing like a B-Cell thread to remind us how wrong it's to like too much the games he hates...

OT: Duke Nukem Forever; no, wait... Daikatana; no, wait... Medal of Honor: Warfighter; no wait... Alien Colonial Marines; no, wait...

Am I in some weird alternate reality where games like Halo, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Destiny don't exist? If so would be so nice if BioShock: Infinite was the worst FPS ever, couldn't even imagine what the best one would be, but one can dream.

Those people are a certain kind of special.

The game has it's issues in my opinion, the lack of a weapon wheel from previous games is one, and the powers felt a bit weak o verall, but it's solid and had a good story and interesting world.

Well its a B-Cell thread after all so I am just gonna come out and say it.

Its certainly was the most overrated.

And its female character along with Ellie from The Last of Us was the most overpraised and overhyped female characrters ever because "Finally a Strong Female Chararcter that is not Sex Eye Candy". Everyone was talking about these 2 during the year, even the site itself was overpraising Ellie:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/features/10281-Meeting-Ellie-How-an-NPC-Became-the-Face-of-the-Game

Jeez writer you calling her the Face of Gaming is a bit much huh? And she only just appeared in one game :p

I actually quite enjoy playing Aliens: Colonial Marines with friends.
Especially the sewer level. Fucking over team-mates by making noise and listening to them scream as they run away is great.

It's not the worst, no, it's just terribly terribly disappointing.

The gunplay was just not satisfying, and sense the game insists on throwing a lot of encounters at you, the game begins to drag before the halfway point, and by the end it is agonizing to play. Even the plasmids don't add enough to make the combat fun for how long and how often you have to deal with it.

Whats worse, is that just from the title alone I was able to guess half of the plot. So any and all of the big reveals were so god damn obvious, they really lost any impact. Then the dimensional stuff was woefully underutilized, and the game just didn't live up to it's whole potential. And I mean, not many games really live up to their potential, but this one... Iunno, I suppose I expected more, but it kind of cops out and breaks it's own reality with some of the ending stuff.

To be the worst, it would have to be worse than Half Life: 2.
That's not possible.

Is it the worst? Probably not. Did I like it personally? Hell no. I see it as taking several steps backward from the original Bioshock by giving you a companion character (though they don't actually lose points for that since she can't be killed in combat), uninteresting levels, black-and-white characters (in the first couple of hours that I played anyway), and weapon restrictions...The Hell?! This was a game I didn't mind having spoiled for me since the actual game part just didn't do anything for me. Give me Wolfenstein: The New One any day...Then again, I was one of those mutants who played through Halo 4 and Aliens: Colonial Marines all the way to the end despite not liking those either.
