Played a Fighter (or whatever) and got my ass handed to me lots of times. Died a lot in all of the quests (mainly the Werewolf and the big city ones). After died at least a gazillion billion times fighting the last boss because I didnt buy potions (or whatever it called), I finished the game.

Well, at least I enjoyed it a lot.

Managed a full playthrough without anyone ever dying on the hardest difficulty.
I wouldn't say the game is hard, but it's definitely more challenging than like 95% of recent games.

If you really can't beat it on normal or easy, you're...
No, I'm sorry, you're just bad.
Plain bad.

People over on the Bioware forums complain that they solo'd the game on nightmare with all three classes, so it's not that difficult. I personally tend to play on lower difficulties, but I didn't find the game troublesome in any way. Stack up your armor and defense and you can make yourself pretty much indestructible.

Actually--I do think I understand why some people have problems. The superior "builds" in the game consist of putting EVERY SINGLE STAT POINT YOU GET into ONE STAT--MAYBE put a few into another stat if you have to in order to get certain abilities. Otherwise, stick with your main stat.

If you do this, you will be gold. But the game kind of nudges you toward distributing your points across the board, which is invariably one of the worst builds in the game.

I found it challenging enough. It wasn't pull out your hair challenging and yes there were even some parts I pulled my hair out on. If you don't have enough xp when going into certain places than yes, it is mingd blowingly hard but if you're the proper level it can range from pleasantly fun to challenging. The final boss wasn't hard though, it was just tedious to kill...damn ballistas!

On my first and currently only playthough I was mage. I had only had a difficult time on two or three boss fights, if you could call them that. Honestly, I thought the dragon fight at the end wasn't that hard either, just took forever to kill.

The strategy I figured out that worked best was to have 2 Mages and two fighters. Wynne healed while my mage shot fireballs etc while the two tanks Alistair and Sten were up front keeping the enemies at bay. I definitely missed a few chests here and there but otherwise it worked like a charm.

edit: mine was on normal, I'm too egotistical to play anything on easy.

All of my problems stemmed from my FPS going dangerously low. Almost every other time I was totally fine. It sounds like your friends just suck.

The only class you need is a tank. A AoE mage and DPS/archer warrior/rogue are good, so is a healer. Healers aren't necessary, assuming you have enough poultices. Dwarf Noble is good on that one... reaaaaal good. He can sell the really expensive lyrium potion made by himself to Gorim at a crazy amount of profit (compared to any other character or merchant).

Or just be an Arcane Warrior. Don't really need anyone else.

I didn't have much trouble with the game, and it was my first experience with this type of Bioware game.
Granted, I played WoW and raided for a few years so that may have given me an upperhand, plus you know, I actually read the skills. Cone of cold is amazing >.> The dragons in the game weren't all that hard since I had both Wynne and Morrigan disabling them for 50% of the fight.

Just completed a full run of Origins and Awakening on Hard (as an Archer, which was way more fun than any of my other playthroughs). It's not my first time on this difficulty, but I took note of how many times I died.

In Origins: 16. Some of those were the result of going early to a area such as the Deserted Building where enemies are abundant and of higher levels. The High Dragon kicked my ass as well, and I died twice against the Archdemon when my mage (Morrigan) was both times so I lost a lot of buffs as well as the healing spells I gave her.

In Awakening: 0. I didn't die once. Not only that, but it was rare for any member of my party to die. A lot of this is because my Archer was so insanely good by the end of Origins that she was doing no less than 200 damage per shot and up to 1000 with the Arrow of Slaying. But still, the expansion is insanely easy. I could have easily died much more in Origins had I drank a Health Poultice just half a second later. I won a good many fights by just a hair, especially early in the game. But in Awakening, not even the bosses provided an appropriate challenge.

Are you kidding... I thought it was too easy...
but I guess if you pick the underpowered skill it might be hard.
Anyways Bioware is not known for gameplay balance...

I have it on PC and I used to play Baldur's Gate, it was a easy as pie. Why my first level thief was even able to kill things, amazing!

I really dependes on what you do. I found that aslong as you have a tank, a hunter/assassin rouge, and mage set to heal the game was very easy.

You could fill that fourth slot with what every you want.
