Was Twilight Princess really that bad?

I liked it a lot.

But then, I played it on the Gamecube. Seems that most people who dislike it played the Wii version.

I enjoy the game a lot, but I do have some criticism for it. For example, Midna is just a pain until about half way through the game when she A) stops pointing out the obvious(or at least tones it down a lot) and B) actually treats you like the hero you are instead of just being a ponce. Another is that I'd like to use the dungeon items outside of the dungeons you get them! Great example: the spinner. You use it a total of 3 times outside of the dungeon you get it in. Dominion rod is even less used.

Also it is a good amount better on the Gamecube, since pressing buttons works better than Wii flailing. I know it's an early Wii game so the controls weren't nailed down yet though, so I'm sure Skyward Sword will be amazing.

I liked it, in fact I thought it was better than Ocarina. I suppose it was easy, but none of the Zelda games are that hard really anyway.
I found OOT, Master Quest fairly hard, And its my favourite title from the series.

IMO it's the worst console Zelda game of the last decade and a half. Does that make it a bad game? No, it's just that I think all the others were better. LttP, OoT, MM, WW, etc.

Besides the fact that the story is wearing on a bit, I also loathed the Wii controls for the game. Loathed them. So much so that I had to sell it and buy it for the Gamecube.

I thought TP actually made fairly good use of the WiiMote and was probably the only example of motion controls done well in a 'core game.
Yes, the "waggle to attack" was such a great idea, and always works perfectly. -_-

Honestly though, button-presses for me are 1000 times more reliable in combat than shaking my wrist; half the time it wouldn't register and the other times it would swing at a minor twitch. Glad to hear it worked for some people though. Still, it makes me not want Skyward Sword if it's going to be more of the same, which is annoying since it'll be the only Zelda game I haven't played (since the 90's, anyway).

EDIT:

It's been surprisingly forgettable for me, probably owing to its lack of difficulty, similarity to Ocarina, and failure to make it's epic moments all that epic (case in point, the horribly disappointing sword fight with Ganondorf). But bad? That's just silly. It was solid and (at the time) interesting. I don't regret playing it all, I just feel it was more forgettable than every previous main Zelda console release.

I rather liked Twilight Princess, it felt, to me, the pretty much the same as Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but it was easy. Too easy. But I don't need a game to be difficult to like it (as long as it's not as easy as Fable 3).

To me, it was one of those "I'll play you once" games.

That said, I'm not too fond of the Zelda games, but I've played most of them.

I never played the Wii version, but i've had the Gamecube version for a long time, and i loved it. Got through the whole thing twice, and got all the extras. I found it an enjoyable game.

Dunno really, just like every game I've played on the Wii, I never finished it because I got bored with flailing my arms around like an idiot.

I thought it was pretty good, actually. I liked quite a few things about it. Sure, it wasn't as ground-breaking as OoT, but I don't really think any of the Nintendo games since the N64 days really have been so that's probably not all that fair. It was still a solid title that was very enjoyable to play.

The game wasn't bad, if you played it on the format that it should be played on, the Gamecube.

If you only played it on the Wii, then i can at least understand why some people would dislike it. The better, and more traditional control setup really does make the game that much better.

It was a great game! People just complain that it's not Ocarina of Time, even though it does everything better. I know someone will take offense to that, but really, they're very different games.

and I've found that whenever someone complains about it, there argument is, to quote Yahtzee, "barely fucking there and yet at the same time, virtually impenetrable".

I'll agree though: the game takes a while to get going.

Sure, it was easy, but a lot of games are easy! Sure it was for the wii, but it was a sword game! The wii is made for those! Sure, it had bad graphics, but it was still a beautiful game! Graphics mean nothing. And it had a kick ass soundtrack. And it had Midna. You know, the best zelda character EVER.

All I'm asking is, why do you think it's bad?

EDIT: Before there's confusion, I've been across the internet and found a lot of hate for it.
I wasn't aware of any general consensus that it was bad at all; in fact, it's in many ways superior to Ocarina of Time in my opinion. I'm unsure how it can have bad graphics and still be a beautiful game. If you mean that the graphics aren't hi-def or as detailed as Uncharted, then I get it. It's still great-looking in my opinion, the way that the Metroid Prime games are great-looking, and there are parts that are absolutely breath taking. Agreed on the music - well, agreed on the overworld music, which I think is the best in the series. Every section that leads Link back to the overworld wants me to find my horse quick and run over some odd-looking creatures.

...so I can't wait for Skyward Sword's fully orchestrated music. And I do hope that the boss fights are actually challenging.

It was a great game, no doubt about it, but for me it was a letdown. One of the things that make Zelda games so enjoyable for me is that it is about exploration. Twilight Princess was the first one however to consciously lock you down to a certain area until it was considered "completed". The twilight bug parts being the most blatant. In earlier titles, the only reason why you couldn't progress further was simply because you didn't have the right item yet. In here it was because some twilight shield held you back or that you got dropped into some sort of place without an exit before clearing it.

On top of that, in earlier titles you had some sort of freedom to choose in which order to tackle the dungeons. Wind Waker was an obvious example of that going downhill, but at least Alttp and oot both had points in where you had total freedom in choosing what to do. Which made the exploration all the more fun; it wasn't like I was held by the hand of a gamedesigner that was afraid "I might have lost my way otherwise". TP was quite the opposite in that regard. Then we have the boring fetchquests and the heart pieces that could be found easier than ever (though, truth to be told, I didn't expect them to be able to top the seacharts and the Nintendo Gallery from Wind Waker anyway).

It was a great game, no doubt about it, but I just can't think of it as a great "Zelda" game.

I still hold it as one of the best Zelda games. It might not have been as revolutionary as I'd hoped (I thougth the Wii controls would be as good as what Skyward Sword is now aiming to deliver), but great game nonetheless.

It did appear as incredibly empty to me, compared to Wind Waker where there were side-quest and treasure around every corner. And linear, there was practically no reason to visit 90% of the locations more than once.
And there were so many little annoyances, too, like how some items turned pretty much useless outside of the dungeon you got it in?
And why did we need to hear what rupeee is which every time we turn the game on again? Why did it give out money in every other treasure chest and then give us little to nothing to spend it on?
"... but it won't fit in your wallet, so let's put it back for now", I got that line much, much, much more than I cared for.

And why on earth did Link turn into a wolf of all things? A shadow monster would have been plausible, the only reason I can think of for the wolf theme is giving Okami a middle for using basically every gimmic from every Zelda game ever.

It was good, had some meh dungeons (looking at you there, city in the sky). The story was worked out very well through the game. Graphics were good, specially for a launch title. Not the best Zelda I've ever played, that place still remains shared between Wind Waker and the 'adult' part of Ocarina of Time.
