OoC @Salty: I believe the FF2/4 one. Never heard of the FF3/8 one. But the 1/9 one, I can safely say is not true.
FF9 has a lot of references to every FF that came before it. There is a Buster Sword in the weapon shop in Lindblum for instance. And when you examine the sword, Zidane remarks he once 'knew a guy who had one of those.' Yeah.
