Unfortunately, how would he beat a galactic spanning empire with unlimited resources at their disposal? And all Riou would have is basic soldiers?
The Crusaders, if bored enough, would destroy the planet that he is on like a boot killing a bug. Or worse, capture torture and turn him on their side with Koltanium poisoning. But no, they are sadistic and pure evil. They suffered for 75 years as their former alliances abandoned them at the end of the Rift War and left to die. They are beyond pissed off.
Koltanium there is key and without it.... Ehhh, dead. XD (Think Heart of Darkness/Apocalyse Now with Dante's Inferno...)
Shu wouldn't help as he would have to think of ways to extremely limited soldiers per planet and fleet, each with limited AP Koltanium rounds and that every Crusader Soldier is Pure-Koltanium reinforced. Might not have the insane powers like Vanguards or Wardens, but from the example give of 5 to 1 ratio...

"Very well, it seems I have to intervene." The darkness recedes revealing Luc lighting up the area around them, revealing a dead world devoid of life. "Is this better, girl?"

There's a time skip of ~8-10 years after that, in which Joel and Matt are still alive.
@Zeph: I think it's alternate versions for each universe as well, which is why I don't understand how it would be a paradox to kill off Winter or Austin.

@Trilby: Why are you pissed off about this? It's my characters for one. And two, your plot revolves around the suffering of less or more of everybody's characters. I hardly call that a plot as it is a 'sadists show'....
