I'm one of those people who has very little nostalgia for the Golden Age of video games because I happen to think the Golden Age is now. Sure, there's a cesspool of garbage out there in terms of games, but there are also games available now that simply would have never been possible "back in the day."

I don't hate on games much because video games are my favorite hobby. I've even got my fiancee trying her hand at casual stuff like Feeding Frenzy and Peggle. I have lots of love for games, and the ones I do like, I like a lot.

I like to bring up Crackdown and Assassin's Creed in situations like these. The first got bashed at shovelware for Halo 3 and the second for being lame and repetitive. I couldn't disagree more. Crackdown was TONS of fun, and so was AC. AC's story is amazing and interested me more than most RPGs. I can't wait for both games to deliver sequels.

The question we should be asking is whether being an Internet forum nerd/troll who beats up on virtually every game before eventually buying nearly all of them has now become an intrinsic part of being a gamer.

For me, it hasn't. For those that do feel that way, however, I'd say it could be a good idea to re-examine their choice of hobby. Sure, legitimate criticism is necessary for the cream to float and the shit to sink, but if all you do is bash games, then why bother? Life has so many more interesting past times to offer than a consistent stream of belligerent, immature negativity.

That's it, I'm done.

I dunno I think alot of this hate is being taken out of context. People are hating on alot of games for all the wrong reasons. How many of the haters have actually played the game they are hating? How many are letting some random guy on a random website tell them how they should feel about a game? Or the whole "ya this game wasn't for me" when read by a fanboy turns into "OMG WHY YOU BASHING ON MEH GAME, IT IS TEH BESTEST GAME EVER."

You could always do like me, hate everything rated anything less than M or a high T that you haven't played or seen good ads for (mostly because I've never liked most childeren's games even when I was one) because most of it is on the Wii (which fails if you ask me, I know it plays GC games but I'll stick to my GC). But so far as cutsey appearance games go I totally want Overlord though I have no idea what the rating is, but its hillarious. Of course there is also Harvest Moon: AWL which is a great timekiller, but not exactly something I go out of my way to play. But seriously I hate most games that are rated anything below T.

Tastes are objective - everyone has different ones, and forums tend to serve as a place where people get defensive when their tastes are challenged. They also allow people the freedom to act like taint scrapings since they know no one can get in their face about it.
Um, I think you mean that tastes are subjective, not objective.

Anyway, on topic: As one of the few Halo fans around here, I definitely see where you're coming from. I think Yahtzee said it best: "Do you really need someone in authority giving you a simple 'yea' or 'nay' before you buy anything? Why don't you roll over so they can stamp on the other side of your face?" Other peoples' opinions shouldn't matter; you're the one that has to enjoy the game. Yeah, I'm pretty easy to please, but why see that as a character flaw? Means I'm happier than the rest of humanity most of the time.

Sometimes games get widely hated for significant change. Not necessairly for better or worse, but moreso how it's presented.

My example is CS:S. I'm a 1.6 fanboy, and I think I will be until I die. I was so excited for Source, which was *supposed* to be a modernization of 1.6. It isn't. Infact, besides sharing roughly the same models, roughly the same map, and roughly the same weaponset, they're two vastly different games. I tend to generalize and say that CS:S sucks, because it isn't 1.6. I know a lot of people do that... Fallout 2 & 3 suck, because they aren't Fallout. I'm willing to bet if every game came out as a stand alone with a new title, there would be a good deal fewer hate posts. IMO at least.

Well, have you ever seen an, "In order" sign on a vending machine or elevator?
More importantly, Singing Gremlin, you always remind me of ice cream. Stop it.

Because threads about how awesome a game is are boring.

Haha! That is quite possibly the best thing I've been accused of recently. Please enlighten me on quite how I pull that off. Maybe I can practise the effect and cause ice cream cravings to everyone in the same room as me.

Hrm... I thinks it the combination of a username that sounds like a good name for a novelty ice cream bar, the avatar that, at first glance, looks like smiling chocolate ice cream in a bowl, and the length of your sentences.

Ah. That makes sense... well, mostly. Although I'm tempted to be offended you consider my impish sword wielding grinning gremlin to be an affable desert.

Singing Gremlin. Now with ice-creamy sentence lenths!

And seriously, if anyone can explain the hate for NWN 2, that'd be nice. I understand the complaints for all the other games, but that one still mystifies me.
Quite interesting you ask that because i've recently found NWN 1 and i've started playing it.
Amazingly enough i am enjoying it :)

I think that people get effected by other people too easily.
Yahtzee really can make some good statements and make them seem bigger than they may be.
An example is the Halo 3 AI; Yahtzee exclaimed that the AI was "Pants on head retarded" whereas all my time on the legendary campaign they had been extremely useful when fighting the hordes of Aliens.

You do have to admit though that developers are getting Lazy and the next "amazing" game to come out will slap us all in the face.

Thank you. I enjoyed, and still do enjoy Halo 3. I think all the hate comes from people that

enjoyed those games not wanting to get eaten alive by people that hated them. Like me.

It's true that it's fairly easy to nitpick games, and finding flaws is more entertaining conversation than not, but there is a fundamental problem in that many people start taking this to heart.

After awhile, some people forget how to enjoy games. They're so actively scanning for errors that they're unable to find the enjoyment in it.

Yeah, I think that part exactly is what personally bothers me, although bothers is quite a strong term. I also think I originally meant to put something along those lines in there, but once I let my hands near the keyboard I get somewhat carried away.

I like a lot of stuff that comes out now-a-days, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense seeing as I'm a person that views games as "art" and therefore I should probably be overly-critical of everything I play.

But back to the original point, I think it might be because there is always someone who hates a game and they seem to get word out pretty fast.
