We need a AAA shooter that isn't teamwork-bound

Other than CoD. Because other than CoD, we have nothing right now.

It used to be Unreal/Quake/Halo/CoD were the big games you could play solo and have fun in. Then they all died except for CoD, and while Halo tried to come back it slammed straight into the "basically cancer solo" slot that so many games fall into.

But pretty much every AAA shooter, nay, AAA multiplayer is a circle-jerk of teamwork and "you'd better have friends to play this with or suffer". And its why I think CoD keeps succeeding in spite of all it's problems - its the only AAA multiplayer game you can reliably pick out and say "Yes. I will be able to enjoy this solo and have fun even if friends aren't around or get the game."

The only other game that has even come close is Titanfall, and it was *so, so* good, but it just didn't have enough content to keep people sated and released too close to Ghosts, so people just went to CoD.

Unreal Tournament is coming back with Deathmatch mode. And, in my opinion, it's pretty damn spiffy.

Doom? And I hear another Quake is in the works.
The new DOOM multiplayer is pretty awful. Because they outsourced it to the Devs that did the Halo multiplayer (Creative Assembly) so its not even really DOOM - its Halo 4 with a DOOM skin.

Its also F2P, and considering how EPIC's last F2P venture has gone (Paragon...P2W and extremely grind heavy) yeah....

You seem to have a misunderstanding here...CoD solo queue sucks just as much as any other game's solo queue and if you actually intend to win matches there's going to need to be a certain degree of teamwork.

People just don't give a shit that it sucks in solo queue because it's CoD. :p

They've said there will be no micro transactions, and the game will be payed for through a marketplace where modders/individuals/3rd parties will sell mods and such. Epic won't be selling a damn thing to people directly.

How in the hell that will work is beyond me, but they seem to be going out of the way to avoid the free to play model.

And in any case, you know you can play for free right now. It's pretty damn fun, and nothing even available to buy!

Play Free-for-all then?

Or get a strong back like mine to carry your team!

I can empathise with what you say and I agree to some extent, but I think that games have almost evolved to a point where something like old-school death match just isn't feasible. Back in the day when UT and Quake 3 brought DM into the mainstream (yes, I'm aware it had been around for a lot longer) the mere fact that you were playing with other real people was enough of a novelty to make online DM an awesome experience. But now we're so used to online competition that unless there's some element of teamwork, some factor that means our success or failure at least partially depends on the performance and co-operation of real, actual people, any competitive game seems rather empty, and any victory is hollow. We might as well be playing against AI.

Anyway, that's my view. Some people are enjoying the new Doom and UT multiplayer, and that's awesome. I've tried them, found them fun for a little bit, then got bored quite quickly.

Seconding the Unreal Tournament Alpha in that case. It's amazing so far. Real classic stuff. They even put the original music in.
