There's recently been a lot of examination of the "war"between hardcore and casual gamers. However hardcore is a surprisingly nebulous term. In the context of this argument it may simply mean "anyone who isn't a casual gamer". However hardcore gamers also indicates a particular sect of gaming who mostly, if not exclusively, play games of the likes of Modern Warfare and aren't likely to play any game that doesn't have the word "kill" in the title.
So what about us, the portion of gamers represented here on the escapist. Those of us who enjoy a wide range of games, from FPS to RPG, and are just as willing to play as Kirby as they are master chief. The people who have been playing videogames for years, maybe almost their entire lives.

We are not casual gamers, we don't fit in this most recent aspect of hardcore. We are the gamers gamer, we consider ourselves, even if we don't admit it, elite among our culture of gaming. I can't be the only one of us who thinks that we aren't really hardcore gamers anymore. The definition of hardcore gamer is changing, we can either fight this coopting of something we never really needed, or we can give ourselves a new title, something we can create and own.

But what will it be? what name will we give to ourselves? I consider the populous of the Escapist be be almost universally members of the group that needs to be named here. So I leave it up to the vox populi.

I think a good one would be "elite" although that does sound a little, elitist. maybe "veterans" we are people who have been playing for a while. I don't know, this is the beginnings of an idea, and obviously we can flesh it out some more.

Vets could work well.
A gaming vet: Someone who has played everything and just wants the next title to be fun.

Like that but worded better. Also Bants.

Hardcore, casual, any sort of gamers who label themselves as hardcore, casual, whatever: THEY. ARE. JUST. GAMERS.

That is the end of it. We are all just gamers.

I completely admit I am one of the "elite", it helps me in my job on a daily basis. The point where I have no problem talking to a father about Call of Duty then talking to his son/daughter/wife/etc about the latest Mario game or whatever. OK, so that's an extreme example (and a rather fit girl was in my store with an AWESOME fable tattoo the other week, but yeah.)

I agree that "hardcore" is quickly becoming synonymous with playing nothing but CoD/MoH/etc. (in this country generally paired hand in hand with Fifa)

But re: your idea that we're veterans? It may be true, but I don't wanna think about it. I've been playing games for as long as I can remember, and a lot of the games I used to play are older than me, so yeah, I'm technically a Veteran (Chuckie Egg, Paperboy and many other games in which I could make a sandwich AND eat it whilst it loaded were my youth, as well as Mario and Sonic)

I also hesitate to call us "expert" gamers. In most other vocations/hobbies this would be accurate, but then I remember that I SUCK at most games.

Yes, in a broad sense. however you imply that there is no value in differentiation which i'm not so sure of. Demographic/cultural identity is very important to a lot of people. Plus many gamers don't like to be associated or confused with stereotypes or particular type of gamers... so how do you clarify the situation with out a more specific label?

I already posted my opinion on "hardcore" in another thread today, so for simplicity i'll just copy that here... forgive my laziness.

"Hardcore simply (har har) refers to those gamers who are part of the nerd/geek gamer culture as opposed to those who are "casual", represented by the barbarian hordes of Wii and other motion control nouveau gamers invading "our" cultural niche. Thats the high level meaning anyway, hardcore is also often characterised by amount of time spent gaming, how "seriously" you take gaming as a hobby, and what sort of games you play."

Well, I always considered "Hardcore gamer" to mean someone who plays a lot of games, not just the violent and bloody ones. I consider myself a hardcore gamer in that respect (just look at my shelf of PC games, then my two shelves of Wii games, then my drawer of GameCube games, then my two boxes of N64 games, then my box of NES games). I play games way too much. And I have been playing since I was about 5. So "veteran" sort of applies, but I take veteran to mean you're out of the game (lolz pun). A veteran of a war is done with the war and probably out of the service. I am not done with gaming and probably never will be (even when I start a family and stuff; example: one of my friend's dads still plays COD).

I'm still sticking with "hardcore gamer," for now.

how about true gamers? those that are good in all, but master none, of the genres of gaming.

How about splitting the community into "barely legal gamers" for people who play games with age ratings that they just qualify to play and "red hot gamers" for people who have a lot of fiery passion for the pastime.

I am "the Greatest Gamer that Ever Lived" so that title is already taken...

The rest of you could be called "Beverly," how does that sound? Okay Beverly, enjoy your video games.

Anyone who suggest they are the 'true' anything is close to the height of pretentious arrogance.

Personally I would go for 'a bunch of open-minded people who enjoy playing videogames'.

Ha, I like that. "Barely legal gamers," sounds like a porno.

I don't think its really necessary to have a label at all to be honest. Playing video games is just something that people do, like people read books or watch tv or movies. Only thing that I see that makes sense being labeled is pro gamers, the ones playing games for a living.

"People who don't care about being called anything" - or for short just "people who play games"?

I will play anything. But I really don't care for a term. My future brother in law would probably class himself as a hardcore gamer since it seems to be all he does and as such, he would probably class himself as a 'better' gamer, but I've been playing long before him and I really would play anything once.

I'm just a person who plays games. You might as well call me the 'sweeper'. Cookies for the Terry Pratchett fans who know Rule Number One. I don't need any glorious titles.

I like Veteran as a choice for hardcore. Elites sounds elitist, and with the bad blood between casual and hardcore gamers what it is now, it just wont help anyhting. Its a hard thing to choose, because any term can be viewed as durogatory from the other group, and make it seem like we dont want a union between the groups, but rather a continuing divide and seperation.

So, I do have to say, Sassafrass poses a good point. Labeling with a different name doesnt exactly help matters. It only gives a new name, and veteran in and of itself is unclear. And like I siad, it only make the groups think there should always be a divide between us, not a union in good will.

Imagine, five years from now, the "casual" gamers will be veterans by reason of age, but if they are still playing casual gamers, it just makes them veteran casual gamers.

Video Game Enthusiasts.

It works well for both sides, they enjoy their games, play the games, perhaps it leans more to the "hardcore" crowd but we were all "casual" at one point, then we grew up, played games. If you at any point played Tetris then congrats, you've played and likely enjoyed a casual game.

Typically I don't use "casual" or "hardcore" terms when it comes to gamer. And the term "gamer" has such negativity surrounding it I refuse to use the term period, so I use Video Game Enthusiast(s) to describe my enjoyment and play of any and all game that I deem fun. Anyone remember when games were just...fun? Story, graphics, gameplay, all great and a requirement, but a game needs to, forth and foremost, be fun.

I dunno, lesbo has a certain something.

The problem with the casual/hardcore dichotomy is that it's far too binary. I'd classify myself as a sort of "enthusiast" gamer - the games I play are certainly not "casual", and yet, I haven't the time to play as a "hardcore" gamer would.
Agreed. It's just the "Them Vs. Us" mentality. Pro-life/pro-choice, Democrat/Conservative, Theist/Atheist, Pirate/Ninja, Vegan/Non-retard. Can't I just play games and enjoy them without someone trying to classify me?
