There's recently been a lot of examination of the "war"between hardcore and casual gamers. However hardcore is a surprisingly nebulous term. In the context of this argument it may simply mean "anyone who isn't a casual gamer". However hardcore gamers also indicates a particular sect of gaming who mostly, if not exclusively, play games of the likes of Modern Warfare and aren't likely to play any game that doesn't have the word "kill" in the title.
So what about us, the portion of gamers represented here on the escapist. Those of us who enjoy a wide range of games, from FPS to RPG, and are just as willing to play as Kirby as they are master chief. The people who have been playing videogames for years, maybe almost their entire lives.
We are not casual gamers, we don't fit in this most recent aspect of hardcore. We are the gamers gamer, we consider ourselves, even if we don't admit it, elite among our culture of gaming. I can't be the only one of us who thinks that we aren't really hardcore gamers anymore. The definition of hardcore gamer is changing, we can either fight this coopting of something we never really needed, or we can give ourselves a new title, something we can create and own.
But what will it be? what name will we give to ourselves? I consider the populous of the Escapist be be almost universally members of the group that needs to be named here. So I leave it up to the vox populi.
I think a good one would be "elite" although that does sound a little, elitist. maybe "veterans" we are people who have been playing for a while. I don't know, this is the beginnings of an idea, and obviously we can flesh it out some more.
