Two things could definitely stand to be adopted from the Japanese school system:
Japanese class (or another foreign language, taught from an early age; the Japanese are taught English from I believe 5th grade onward)
Kendo class (because hitting other people with things is a) a workout and b) cathartic. Less stress=better tests.)

There are other ideas, but those are the two that are really important to me.

[sup]Disclaimer: Much like katanas and revolvers in relation to other swords and guns, the Japanese are not automatically better than their American counterparts at everything. Their schooling, however, is far superior to America's public schools, as far as I can tell. And, let's face it: video games came from Japan. They've got to be doing something right.[/sup]

I know my school got it right, in terms of compulsory subjects. We had higher tier science and maths classes, so that the not so great at maths/science didn't feel alienated and lose morale. Our gym/excercise/physical education classes spanned over an entire afternoon from 1pm to 4pm, plus a supplementary class at some other point in the week which lasted an hour.

But my school did fuck up the timetable soon after my year had left. Instead of just having one time table, there were two, and they would alternate fortnightly, so you'd get week A and week B. This causes a little confusion sometimes. And also lunch doesn't start until 12:30pm instead of the normal 12pm. Most kids are hungry by 11am.

definitly, i think there was a business in Japan which, once a month let its employees beat a doll of thier CEO. I read that it had 30% growth every year it had been going.
