I really really want them to NOT inject too much fantasy into it. Here's the thing: glass and ebony and etc. super shiny uber-magical armor looked absolutely ridiculous. It's preposterous to have bright green armor and swords in the world. I hope Bethesda takes a more realistic approach to equipment. Have a more in-depth armor and sword system. Like several kinds of leather armor imbued with different levels of enhancements (leather tunic inlaid with steel plates etc.) We need to drop this super-fantasy fairy twinkly bullshit. It looks stupid.
As for weapons, I'd be happy to see a grand display of different weapons based on real life. There are so many different types of blades from many cultures.

Wow....just.....wow.

First up, TES games are meant to be pretty detatched from reality. Your in a world where m ost fish try to eat you and the birds...also try to eat you. Where deamons can cross dimensions on a whim, where the parts on the maps marked "Here be monsters" are more reliable as a point of reference than the mountains, and you want realism?

People always bring up this argument and I never get to answer it. "realism" in a fantasy setting has to do with one thing: mechanics. If you have a fantasy world but you can randomly warp the laws of physics, that doesn't make any sense and it brings me out of the game. If you at least try to explain why physics is manipulated, like magic, it removes the element of ridiculousness. How is glass armor explained? Why am I wearing bright green armor made of glass, that will break camouflage if I'm stalking a deer or quietly sneaking up on an enemy camp? How is that explained? What culture did it arise from? For what reason is it green?
DO you see what I mean? It's all about mechanics, not necessarily the setting.
EDIT: For example, the golden Ayleid armor is explained. I have no issue with it, even though I would question if the armor was actually made of golden and if it's not, how they colored it to look gold. Also why they would. But at least it has a history, there's a reason it's gold. Because the Ayleids make gold things, I guess.

I hope different bladed weapons have their own advantages and feel more unique. Daggers are not swords. I want to stab you, not fence with you. Daggers were gimped in Oblivion.

I have an idea: glass should break easier, but also amplify enchantments put on them. Also it should be crystal instead of glass, and should be various gem colors instead of puke green. REASONING: many cultures believe crystals to be magic, but armorwise they're just rock. Crystal armor should be for mages who want better protection than cloth and still be able to have full magic power.

See? Right here. That makes total sense. Glass armor adds a tone of power to enchantments, ex. a barrier spell added to armor, but if it's hit it breaks easier. And doesn't have any real armor rating. That's what I'm talking about.

While we're on weapons, why are axes categorized as BLUNT? Ever used a blunt axe? Doesn't chop wood!... I mean, I know it was either that or blade (and it's technically not a blade), but really!
It's nothing to do with sharpness, it's because although an axe has a blade, it's used more like a blunt weapon. So when it comes to skills, it falls much closer to a mace than a sword in terms of technique.

Am I the only one who thinks that Skyrim will be Oblivion that caters to the people who bitched that Obvlivion wasn't Morrowind?

OT: I want weapon and armour actual differences rather than just ranks with more damage/defense than the last.
