So what we've learned from this thread is that some people wear shoes inside and some don't?

I live in Norway and so far I haven't been in a single home where it's okay to wear shoes inside, we even had to wear slippers instead of shoes at school until I was 12. As far as I know all the people I know around Europe also take off their shoes when they get in. Only place I didn't have to take my shoes off was when visiting an American family living in Italy. I think.

Then again, there's usually more mud around here than there is where we were in Italy, so I suppose it sort of depends on where you live.

Australian here. Obviously something like work boots get left outside the door. But shoes come only when I know I won't need them anytime soon. You have mat at the front of the house to stop anything being treked in.

So I guess I'm the only one around here who likes to wear shoes inside huh? When I get home I'm usually to tired to get my shoes off and shoes are comfy so I have no reason to take them off. And I know for a fact I don't go trudging into peoples houses tracking mud and shit. I always clean my shoes off out side and check to make sure there is no mud. And when I can't get the mud off, then I take my shoes off, and that's rare because where I live there isn't much to get on your shoes. As for my house, if you want wear shoes in my house I'm fine with it as long as your not tracking dirt or mud. I honestly don't understand the big deal about wearing shoes inside. I do it all the tme

It may depend on the shoes too. I see a lot of young people with comfortable sneakers mostly made of thin fabric, but I don't get the appeal of them myself. I have canvas athletic shoes that are really heavily padded and comfortable and last a long time (2+ years so far), and I don't have any other pair. They're pretty heavy duty, like I get my feet suited up to go somewhere. I don't have them on unless I'm really going somewhere, and I think using your bare feet regularly is important, so when I'm in my house or even going down the walk to the garbage can I prefer my bare feet or sandals. In other people's homes I guess it depends on the person and how long I'm there.

PS: I'm in California in a nice neighborhood (no broken glass or debris or whatnot), so most days I can get away with no shoes.

Because wearing shoes really isn't something that affects your comfort greatly. And if it is, what shoes are you wearing exactly?
The kind of shoes that take 10 seconds to put on, and less than that to take off. The kind that weigh about a pound. The kind I wouldn't want on my couch, my carpets, my bed, or in my bathroom. It's not like I run in and out every fifteen minutes, so why would I not take them off? Because it does affect my comfort greatly. I wear shoes at school, at work, while running errands, and just running. They're the first thing to come off as soon as I get home.

[small]I even found a picture just for you! Don't let the sleek form fool you, these babies can take the elements. I've worn the same pair for 3 years now![/small]

If I feel cold when at home, I get a blanket or turn up the heat. I'm not going to wear a coat indoors. The same goes for shoes. Also, why would you choose to clean up after yourself or others, when you could just not make a mess? Either way, I don't know what the weather is like where you're from, but around here a vacuum cleaner is only going to save you on a dry midsummer day.

I can see how someone would find it awkward when a visitor they don't know takes their shoes off, but how often are you visited by people you're not familiar with? And how often do these people come in beyond the foyer?

I prefer to go barefoot, but I don't get annoyed if people don't take their shoes off when they come inside.

In fact if I leave the house and I'm only going out for 5 minutes to somewhere nearby, I typically won't bother putting shoes on.

Dunno about that. I really know no-one in the Netherlands, Britain, Germany or France who does this. Nor many people in Norway, Sweden or Denmark for that matter.

And I know a lot of people from all these countries as friends, collegues etc.
considering how I am in a somewhat similar position, I must agree - seems to be an american thing...

On topic: I didn't know people do that (keeping their shoes on, that is). Isn't that...bad hygiene or something, carrying all the dirt and potential dogshit in your house around. Makes no sense to me. and I am not even very obsessed with cleaning.

Shoes are uncomfortable I hate wearing them anywhere, plus I really enjoy the way carpet feels on my bare feet.

On a similar note I noticed a lot of tv shows the characters sleep with socks on... yeah I don't think I could sleep with socks on.

It always bothers me when people don't take their shoes off in the house, I've always done that.
It might be because I'm Canadian and deal with 'interesting' weather, so wearing shoes on in the house would lead to an absolutely filthy house, but still, unless you live in the cleanest city on the face of the earth, you're going to have dirty shoes. Feet stink? Take off your socks and wash your feet if its really that bad.

I leave my shoes on for the most part, unless they are obviously dirty such that they would track something across my carpet. I'm actually more comfortable in shoes than my bare foot.

Wearing shoes indoors makes your house filthier than otherwise. This is a fact. I have a habit of taking my shoes off because my place is cleaner when I do it and besides wearing just socks or even bare feet in summer is much more comfortable than being trapped in sweaty shoes all day and all night.

OT: I don't wear shoes in my own house; rarely do I wear shoes inside another person's house, I usually follow suit with that rule based on what another person does.

I think that the OP is thinking a little too hard about this.

A set for a TV show gets changed around a lot and that can involve a lot of stuff you would rather not have bare or sock feet stepping on. These shows may depict private homes but they are not. They are workplaces. Given the time crunch the set managers and workers are under you cannot expect the floor of a studio set to be as safe as the floor of your home. SO the actors wear shoes.

Not complicated really.

I pretty much always take off my shoes when I go inside any house, it's just good manners and something I've conditioned in myself

Granted a lot of my friends kinda shun the idea/grudgingly go along with it after me

You aren't taking one step into my house without taking your shoes off that's for sure. For gods sake, you have socks and floors for a reason.
