It really depends, it's a comfort thing. I don't wear shoes whenever I get home because my home is mostly carpeted and warm. Whenever winter rolls around though I prefer to wear shoes, or socks simply because my feet get cold.

We aren't neanderthals here in Canada, either. You take your damn shoes off in my house... And everyone else's house, too.
Heh, you're kidding me, right?

I tend to stab my toes a lot. My shoes stay on!

Also, I find it dirtier to have my shoes off - Dust and indoor muck'll stick to my socks or bare feet. Nasty! Don't even get me started on stepping in a wet spot in the bathroom.
Please tell me you mean you stub them a lot and thats a typo? O-o

OT: Well I take mine off sometimes and leave them on other times, it depends if I'm cold or if I feel like it. I don't keep my work boots on since they're filthy but my normal canvas shoes are fine.

Because wearing shoes really isn't something that affects your comfort greatly. And if it is, what shoes are you wearing exactly?
The kind of shoes that take 10 seconds to put on, and less than that to take off. The kind that weigh about a pound. The kind I wouldn't want on my couch, my carpets, my bed, or in my bathroom. It's not like I run in and out every fifteen minutes, so why would I not take them off? Because it does affect my comfort greatly. I wear shoes at school, at work, while running errands, and just running. They're the first thing to come off as soon as I get home.

[small]I even found a picture just for you! Don't let the sleek form fool you, these babies can take the elements. I've worn the same pair for 3 years now![/small]

If I feel cold when at home, I get a blanket or turn up the heat. I'm not going to wear a coat indoors. The same goes for shoes. Also, why would you choose to clean up after yourself or others, when you could just not make a mess? Either way, I don't know what the weather is like where you're from, but around here a vacuum cleaner is only going to save you on a dry midsummer day.

I can see how someone would find it awkward when a visitor they don't know takes their shoes off, but how often are you visited by people you're not familiar with? And how often do these people come in beyond the foyer?
Who say's a mess is being made? I hoover the house once a week. That is all that is needed to keep it clean. I live in the north west of England. It rains a lot. Fortunately though we replaced our mud tracks with pavements.

Please note, I'm not saying that EVERYONE MUST WEAR SHOES. I'm saying that I don't get why people think it's weird to wear them inside. I think we can agree though that anyone wearing their shoes to bed is a bit odd.
I live in the Northwest of England also and I can vouch that it is indeed wet and miserable all the time but I tend to wear shoes anyway, unless my shoes get wet.
Not all the mud tracks are replaced with pavements, just the mud tracks are shortcuts =p

I started keeping my shoes on cause we have hardwood and the god sheds a lot, but I've found I actually like it. And it's really not that dirty, if they were I'd take them off.

Speak for yourself, yankee.

Never seen anyone in Canada do that.

Here in New Zealand you normally don't wear shoes inside someone's house.

I still wear mine in my parents' house, but that's more out of habit than anything. And I'm their son, so nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

You wear shoes only to protect your feet outside and not as a part of your outfit?

You seriously would like to keep taking off and putting on your shoes whenever you leave and enter your house?

My shoes are pretty comfortable. I don't see how taking them off is going to be that much better.

*shrug*

I never did understand the whole taking shoes off to enter the house thing.

In multiple instances of US media, I've seen characters wear shoes inside a private home.It always struck me as odd; Why would one wear it? For comfort? Isn't it more comfortable without the shoes..Or with slippers?
And hey, don't you realize that it is DIRTY? What especially baffles me is that Sheldon and the others in Big Bang Theory wear shoes inside the apartment, even with Sheldon's extreme germ phobia. Isn't this exactly the sort of thing he would crack down on?

So, my question is; Is this really common-place in the US, and why? How do you feel about it?
Just on that Sheldon point, someone else may've mentioned this too, if everyone else were wearing their shoes inside, wouldn't he want to do the same to avoid the germs they're bringing in?

Also, heard of a door mat right? (Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but), They're designed to remove the majority of filth accumulated from walking around outside. I know people who ask others to take their shoes off inside, but I think it is a mostly japanese custom (speaking as an Australian who wouldn't have done this in 99% of houses visited).

I don't understand why people take them off. People constantly complain about bumping their toes or stepping on object in the dark, but they could remedy that by not being so odd about wearing shoes.

And I will never comprehend the thinking behind sandals. Anything it protects your feet from will not hurt your feet, and yet you still put time into putting them on, and money into buying them. You may as well get shoes.

Depends how the winds take me at the moment, if I've just come home after being out I'll probably leave the shoes on, unless they are dirty/muddy. Otherwise I'll probably be wearing socks or sandals.

I don't get it really, sure if you were walking around muddy places or places with lots of noticeable dirt yeah, you'd take your shoes off. But the average concrete jungle? I don't see the point. Unless you are traipsing through puddles, nothing is going to stick to your shoes if you pay the slightest bit of attention. Ergo, your shoes won't be dirty.

Only people I've seen regularly take their boots off are tradespeople. Often cause their boots are caked with dirt.

Also, doors mats were invented for a reason. And I've met a LOT of people who's feet absolutely REEK after a few hours of wearing shoes. Maybe it's because of the climate here so people sweat in their shoes a lot, but my god I'd prefer they left their shoes on then be subjected to that stench.

I'm diabetic and wear shoes inside as a necessity, to protect my feet as they are more susceptible to permanent damage.

Varies. A few of my friends' had parents that would demand you take off your shoes when you went inside while others didn't care. At my own house, I take off my shoes if I'm going to be there for a while. If I'm going out again shortly after, I leave them on.

I never wear shoes inside, unless sometimes if I am in someone elses house that has dirty or questionable floors.

I like being barefoot, so generally when I get home I quickly kick off shoes. I only wear socks a few months each year when it gets really cold. I am getting a pair of UGGS or some cheaper ugg knock off soon, so maybe then I will be able to go bare foot in winter. Lets hope.

Offtopic...but I really don't like socks in my bed. If I let another man or women share my bed with me, my one rule is usually that they take their socks off. It's one of those pet peeve things.

A lot of that relates to how TV is made.
Those shoes are a part of those actor's costumes, and are coordinated by the costume department and even the people on the production end of things for various reasons. Lets say that the costumers are told to make a character look "wacky". They might then give them some kind of unusual shoe style to show this. More often than not, however, it's a form of product placement. Wherein clothing and shoe companies have paid to have the actors wear certain clothing brands and styles. I usually take my shoes off inside.

I know it isn't here in Canada. I have noticed this before I always figured it was a US thing.

If I have put on shoes for something that day, it takes me a while to be bothered taking them off.

Why wear shoes? Well, let me do my best to try and think of a selection of reasons.

The biggest one is my mind is the tendency of families to end up randomly going outside, and not really wanting to have to run around (or gather around) a shoe spot to get their shoes on. For example, lets say that I have gotten home from running about for the day. However great taking my shoes off may seem, it is a rather safe bet that parents will soon be out and about asking you to go do something, usually outside. Meaning that as soon as I take off my shoes, I am going to have to put them back on again, to go outside, do a short (or long) task, and then come back INSIDE, and then take off the shoes again.

Another point that has already been raised is just the hardwood floors and the like. A lot of the time the entire house, or only a few select rooms actually have carpets in them. While usually taking off the shoes seems like a relatively clean idea, hardwood floors tend to have all sorts of things that gather on them, and wearing socks will just gather whatever up and then track it around the house just like shoes.

Since I would hate to bore people, thats all the reasons I'll toss, cause I'm a bit lazy too.
