http://topwebcomics.com/ A good site to find comics on.

I recommend http://twokinds.keenspot.com/, http://freefall.purrsia.com/, http://bythebook.smackjeeves.com/chapters/55298/chapter4/.

3 excellent comics with lots of comics for the first two. Third one is newer but really good.

These are the webcomics that I read, in the order they appear in my favourites bar (going from irregular updates to daily updates)
The Doghouse Diaries
<a href=http://leftoversoup.com/index.php>leftover Soup
Something of that ilk
Questionable Content
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Cyanide and Happiness
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Schlock Mercenary

Tacked onto that, take a look at 1/0 (AKA one over zero), for something funny yet deep. It's stopped running, but it's an interesting read.

I really enjoy It sucks to be Weegee! [http://www.interrobangstudios.com/potluck/index.php?comic_id=11] Interrobang's art style is pretty awesome.

Romantically Apocalyptic [http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/] is the shit! you need to check this out also. I pretty much like everything alexiuss puts on his DA.

Not quite sure how this compares to the others being posted here but Lord of the Dwarves [http://www.dawnsomewhere.com/lord-of-the-dwarves/] has an interesting premise.

... Is it no longer acceptable to like VG Cats?

I second Dr. McNinja and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. Also there's Basic Instructions for dry humour. Then there's Wondermark! which is wonderfully funny, but hard to describe. Steampunk? Victorian? The point is, it's old-timey and ridiculously funny.

I'll add another vote to Awkward Zombie [http://awkwardzombie.com/], because genuine comedy and videogames always go well together. Also Two Guys And Guy [http://www.twogag.com/] for some really funny strips and an artist that's very good at keeping to their update schedule.

If you're after ones with actual stories, I quite like Mystery Babylon [http://www.kick-girl.com/] but it only updates on Mondays. There's also Spinnerette [http://www.spinnyverse.com/], but I think I'm only still reading it because I've been with it for a while so feel committed.

Hey escapists, I have been thinking about finding some good webcomics to read online and came here for some suggestions! :D

If you want to know what I am currently reading right now its:

Ava's Demon
Megatokyo
Life in Aggro
Heh, that's the first time somebodies asked for web-comic recommendations and ninja'd Ava's Demon from me - let alone in the first post. Congratulations?
Thank you I guess? :D Sorry if I ninja'd your post!
...you're welcome?

Seriously though, I'm pretty happy that other people are reading it. The writing can be hopelessly clumsy at time; but the art style is simply beautiful and the initial conflict between Ava and the Demon read like a metaphor for the struggles of some mental health problems. It was pretty touching, even if it hit a little close to home.
I only found Ava's demon recently, I adore it, the story is a little slow, but for it's beauty, it's a lot faster than many of the other really arty comic.

Also so far I've found whenever a webcomic really thinks about and uses how the comic appears on the page(with the book effect) it's been really good.
As for recommendations:

Unsounded [http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch01/ch01_16.html] Takes that border breaking idea to the next level though, it's not as consistently pretty as Ava's Demon, saving it for special pages, but the writing is really fantastic too. It's the only webcomic where I've actually wanted to own a physical copy

The Phoenix Requiem [http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/] is a beautiful completed webcomic, a Victorian romance/supernatural mystery, that kept me loving it all the way through
Freak Angels [http://www.freakangels.com/] is another completed webcomic that's done by a professional comic makers, a British after-the-apocalypse story like Day of the Triffids/The Kraken Wakes with very well written characters (if a bit rough and sweary for my sensitive soul =D)

Juathuur [http://gatecrash.juathuur.com/] is a personal favourite of mine. It's a fantasy webcomic, with pretty good art (at the end, it's rough at the start) but most of all everyone has their own motivation and acts on it, going through it the author managed to get me to sympathise with people I'd never have dreamed I could have pity for. Really strong protagonist too, very independent minded but that's both her strength and weakness, and recognised as such.

The Zombie Hunters [http://www.thezombiehunters.com/index.php] - Probably one of the best zombie comics I've read

Widdershins [http://www.widdershinscomic.com/] is a lot more light and less serious than the others, but it's charming and I can't get another of those victorian esque adventures

Snow by Night [http://www.snowbynight.com/]- An alternate world french-colonial thing with some magic and alchemy. I suspect it's going to be a romance story

Earthsong [http://earthsongsaga.com/] - Very similar to Juathuur in many ways.

Finally, I'll add my +1 to the Guilded Age too. It's a story about an adventuring group of diplomats. I've never read a story that treated the world in the way they do, with progressing relationships and the people actually making a difference in a real and more meaningful way than 'defeat the bad lord' even when fighting breaks out, they're there training armies and dealing in politics. People who know they can't change the world but somehow manage to anyway and in a manner much less contrived than these stories normally go to make their heroes saviours.

http://www.sluggy.com/ is really good if you have a spare couple of months to go through the last 16 years of daily comics. Story based, with the same main characters for the entire thing. Quite a lot of quite dark bits (4U city when you get there) but some laugh out loud moments as well.

Also http://www.smbc-comics.com/ http://www.explosm.net/ have been said already. I occasionally read http://www.commissionedcomic.com/ and http://www.grrlpowercomic.com/

These are the three that I read regularly:

Dinosaur Comics. It's a strip where all of the panels are the same in every strip, only the text is different. The writing is just so good that it works. Plus, it has talking Dinosaurs. What more could you want?

xkcd. It's a stick-person comic strip with lots of strips about science, math, and computers. Very creative and very well done.

Homestuck. Not really a comic in the strictest sense of the term, as it lacks a normal comic layout and frequently incorporates gifs, flash animations, and occasionally flash games. It is very original and features a lot of well-written characters. It is also extremely long, and takes a little while to get going, but if you manage to get into it, you'll have a very hard time stopping.
The advantage to homestuck at the moment is the creator is also doing a bunch of other stuff so catching up is (kinda?) feasible. Many of the pages are also just art if that's any consolation to the 6,000+ page comic.

My roommate actually draws one so I'm going to go against his wishes and link it because it is actually pretty good.
Soul Symphony Music, Magic and Monsters but I think its pretty cool.

Misfile This is another silly one that I've been reading for a while that I like to show to people because of the concept.

Isn't this coincidental? I just reviewed a cool webcomic! (yesterday, so not... JUST)

Property of Hate is well worth reading But I'll let my Trash Mutant review tell you all about that.

But Comics Critics is fun, at times.

Another one is Corporate Skull which is Jamie Smart's first try at serious (well, serious mixed in with comedy).

EDIT: You might also want to check out Monster Soup and Dream Scar. I started them but I like to let Webcomics build up over time and these were new then. So I don't know who good they are but they started good.

Read Basic instructions. [http://basicinstructions.net/]
And smbc [http://www.smbc-comics.com/].

They're the best I've come across so far.

Whomp is also really good. Particularly if you're of the nerdier type.

If you don't mind sprite comics, then one of the best ones out there is 8-Bit Theater. Trust me, the production values get a lot better as the series goes on. It's hilarious, it's got a great story and it'll keep you going for a while - 1.224 story strips[footnote]Don't worry, it's actually finished, unlike a lot of plot-based webcomics.[/footnote], and who knows how much bonus material.

Girl Genius ( http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104 )

Long runner, and one of the few webcomics that I'd deem worthy of the label "visual novel". Wonderful characters, complex story, great art, romance, action, humour, zeppelins, steampunk/ "gaslamp fantasy" and mad science galore! What more could you ask? A plot summary would be pages long, but lets just say that it's half past the 19th century, and mad scientists rule the world. Badly.

Surprised no one has mentioned Bug [http://www.bugcomic.com/] yet. (Or they have and I've skimmed past it. Sorry! D: )

One every weekday, just random jokes mostly.

Also Dead.Winter [http://deadwinter.cc/]. A zombie apocalypse comic! Mostly in black and white, with a splash of red around the main characters, but when there are coloured pages, they're awesome. :3 (Also has animated pages for big numbers).

There's Weregeek [http://www.weregeek.com/] Which is basically about a group of geeks that Larp and roleplay, but with a nice supernatural twist.

Sandra and Woo [http://www.sandraandwoo.com/]. A nice, cute comic about a girl and her talking racoon. The same people also make Gaia [http://www.sandraandwoo.com/gaia/], which is a lot more fantasy based with more detailed drawings.

Then there's The Zombie Hunters [http://www.thezombiehunters.com/index.php]. A lot more detailed and slightly more serious zombie comic. (Can you tell I like zombies?)

Another random one I found a long time ago which is Life [http://www.cha0sden.com/Life/]. Hosted on Cha0sden, which has a lot of other, similarly drawn webcomics that are all starting to link together, for the most part... The main one that I've linked is about a girl who overthinks everything and is trying to make her own webcomic. Sort of? (It's a hard one to describe).

But wait, I have more! Also:

Blaster Nation [http://www.blasternation.com/index.php] - Hard to explain myself, so here's the description from the site! "A webcomic set in the fictional city of Sucre Marron, following the lives of five eccentric individuals each obsessing over their own unique hobbies."
Nimona [http://gingerhaze.com/nimona]! - About a shape-shifting mischievous girl who makes herself the sidekick of a 'villainous' scientist. Who it turns out isn't that villainous. :<
Whomp! [http://www.whompcomic.com/] About a guy called Ronnie, and... Umm, well it's very silly, but that's why I like it.
Rain [http://rain.thecomicseries.com/comics/] One hosted on ComicFury that's about a transgender girl who's about to go through her transition, and a lot of others in similar situations. Art's pretty basic, but the story holds up really well.
Fey Winds [http://kitsune.rydia.net/comic/page.php?id=293] An amazingly well-drawn fantasy webcomic! Main girl is half fox, half I-Don't-Know!
Eat That Toast [http://eatthattoast.com/] Not that regular, but pretty silly comics. Most are one off's, some are linked.

I've got a few more, but half the ones I have are already listed, and I'm sure other people will catch the rest. >.> I'm also gonna stalk this thread for new ones myself.

Holy Zen and Blazen
They are both done by the same guy,if you don't mind sprite comics they are both awesome, they become even funnier if you know the source material(Blazblue and Guilty Gear),but they can be funny nonetheless if you haven't played BB or GG,these comics(among other things)inspired me to buy BB and GG
Blazen was cancelled some time ago,but it has recently been resurrected,Blazen's site was taken down some time ago,but you can download it here
The 160 mb file size?,totally worth it

I saw someone mentioning Romantically Apocalyptic up there,i second that shit,it can be pretty funny and the art is pretty good

Here's an old one that has ended.

www.bobandgeorge.com

If you love Mega Man sprite comics where the author sometimes inserts himself into it at times and time travel is used in crazy ways then you will like this one.

Also, Octopus Pie [http://www.octopuspie.com/].
