No one knows what American Pie is about. It includes references which could be to the plane crash, or about the Hell's Angels at Altamont (I think that's the one). There are also apparent John Lennon references, Bob Dylan and Elvis comparisons, suggesting that if it is a song about big musical events, then the most important point of the song is 'The day the music died.' It could be that the song is about various days when music could be said to have 'died'. (Don McLean refuses to say what this song is about)

He has publicly stated that it refers to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, he just won't specify what the other events are.

He dedicated the song to Buddy Holly, and when askd acknowledged that the only date given is when he heard about Buddy Holly's death. None of the musicians are named in song, and when pressed he has always responded 'it's about interpretation.'

He's admitted that the song is an exorcism of grief about Buddy Holly, but that doesn't mean it's about Buddy Holly. The ony thing we can be relatively certain of is that it's about the day the music died, everything else is open to intepretation
