So my little sister likes Justin Beiber, why?, I may never know. She goes on about him a bit and play's his songs all the damn time. When she wonders why I dont like him, I list about ten reasons why not. When I am finished she always responds in the same way. 'I would like to see you do better'.
So I wonder, can a persons criticism be rendered mute because they have no idea about the buissness their target is working in. This applys to anything.

No.

You can dislike him and list many reasons why you don't like his music.
Maybe you can't sing better, maybe you can, that doesn't affect your opinion, and that's true with most media.

No because I can criticize music, books, movies, and video games with reasonable accuracy and I have no idea about their businesses, other then the products.

No. Sure expertise in the area might help you criticise it, but it's not crucial. If you can see glaring flaws and negative points in someone's business without having expertise, that makes it even more worthy of the criticism in the first place, I believe.

No. The person is alegedly a proffesional. (Chances are) you are not. There is no reason to think that you could do better - but that doesn't mean that you can't critisize the erson for being shit.

All Critisism is subjective personal opinion. But whos opinion is more relevent? In a example like say, The new Transformers films. Every Critic on the block has quite rightly thrashed it but do they know how the film industry works? A few yes but not all. Also the moviegoing public who know next to nothing about the industry gave the film praise. So whos right?

Just because i sing poorly and look like a drunken mule doesn't mean I can't point out that other too as this problem, tho in another degree. Doesn't matter if they sing better than me or not, it's still poor =p.

It's the worst most annoying and pointless response to criticism ever.

Just because i'm not a good singer or an expert at making games doesn't mean i can't say other people are shit singers too or also make shit games.
You know what, some games and singers are so shit i probably could do better than them, but i'm not gonna waste my time proving that over some petty argument and i don't expect anyone else to either!

People being wrong in their criticism is a completely different story, like "game designers could stop being lazy and make a new game every month".
Not even that warrants a "I'd like to see you do better"; although it would prove a point, it's just going to come across as bitchy towards anyone who's at least the tiniest bit stubborn. It makes much more sense to tell them WHY they're wrong.

/Rant - I've had a few bad run in's with that comeback xD

That's an example of the Tu Quoque(sp?) fallacy, meaning "You too".
Essentially, just because you can't do better does not excuse them from being awful too.
So no, it's a very poor argument.

It's like saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I judge an opinion on how well it's formulated, not on the status of the person making it.

I know very little about the game industry as compared to someone who actually works in it.

However amongst my friends I have made many good opinions on games and a few good calls.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you are wrong, an opinion is subjective and differs from person to person.

What makes your opinion void is when it goes something like this - "transfrmrs was gr8 cus it had loads of shootin!"

I heard countless people rail on The Da Vinci Code saying it was boring. I watched it and found it to be a great and interesting film.

So to summarise... Your opinion is relevant as long as it's well formulated with respectable reasons. Status means nothing if your opinion is completely one sided and reductionist.

Nope, it isn't.

In fact it's just another, flawed comeback resulting from this ridiculous and widespread "anti-hater" culture in society.

Just because one might not be able to do better oneself, it doesn't mean that you are incapable of finding and judging the faults and flaws of the work of someone else.

For instance, I don't know how to fly an airplane (well, I know some basics, but it's not like I know how to even start up the engine of an airplane with all them confusing switches, dials and buttons in your average cockpit), but I can certainly tell the difference in the manouvres and stunts made by a bad pilot and a good pilot.

naw, you're not saying he's shit, you're saying you don't like him. Therefore fact doesn't enter the equation, since it's all opinion. Go get a song called "Black Infinity" by Epica, or "THe Haunting (Somewhere in Time) by Kamelot. Make her listen to it, ask her if she likes it, and say "I'd like to see you do better" It's simply a different genre

Have you shown her the video where Mr. Bieber got a water bottle thrown thrown at him. "justin bieber gets nailed". Just type that into youtube. Tell me how she responds to that.

It's situational, if it can be done in that instance by the person heckling you than it can be a good it can be used.
