Well, the new Doom game is kinda lame.

Yeah, not impressed.

For a game supposedly going for the fast-paced old-school shooter feel, the movement feels sluggish and floaty. Especially after playing Mirror's Edge and Overwatch.

The jumping and climbing feels like I'm playing fucking Far Cry.

The "glory kills" screw up the movement since you stand still while doing them. And since they're your main source of health you'll be doing them just about all you can. So it ends up being less run-and-gun and more stop-and-start. Plus the animations get repetitive very quickly in a game that is basically all combat all the time.

Worst of all, the weapons aren't satisfying to use. They're mechanically effective but I don't get any feeling of punch or weightiness from them.

The non-verbal characterization moments are cute and definitely something that games with silent protagonists should do more often, but they're few and far between.

Really not seeing what all the fuss was about. Doubt I'll even bother finishing this one.

Talks about old-school shooter feel, compares unfavorably to Mirror's Edge and Overwatch.

Um...what?

Yeah, I'm sure Mirror's Edge really has that "old school shooter feel" that you've been craving.

I mean, I haven't played the new Doom yet so I'm not defending it, but come on, do you not see why this comparison is ludicrous?

I'm not suggesting those games have old school sensibilities. They don't.

I'm saying that after playing Faith or Tracer the Doom Marine feels like playing a fucking tortoise.

The bar for "fast paced" has been raised.

Yup. Not sure how that's relevant though.

Completely agree with those points. Played the demo a while back and yeah, wasn't impressed. Shooting indeed lacks weight and impact(though the new Wolfenstein had much of the same problem) and the gameplay loop of clearing room after room with little to no variation might be 'oldschool' it's incredibly boring by today's standards. I was never the biggest fan of the original Doom games so I thought it was just me, but apparently not. :p Wolfenstein atleast took you on an adventure and felt like it was going somewhere even if the gameplay wasn't the best. Fallout 4 had excellent, genuinely satisfying shooting mechanics in my opinion so next time maybe Id and Machine Games need to consult with some in-house Beth devs. :p

Honestly, after playing Doom, Tracer feels slow as shit, the only thing that really makes her feel fast is her blinking, and thats just a limited dodge that still feels like it recharges too slow, balanced for team play, but she honestly doesn't feel nearly as fast as she should.

I'm not even sure on Faith, I never got an impression of speed from her, she's mobile, but the entire game is set up around its parkour, I just checked the new game, not really feeling any exceptional sense of speed compared to the new doom.

Shit, if those two are the bar for "fast-paced" I am massively fucking disappointed, especially Tracer, I'm having the opposite problem, after playing Doom her basic movement feels kind of lame, her blinking is also mostly a gimmick ability where I would take the Doom arsenal over her dinky blink any day of the week. The weapons feel like the best ever compared to Tracer's tickle guns.

To each their own and all that, but Jesus your examples of fast paced I found wholly unimpressive, I guess it goes to show how different subjective experiences can be.

I'd say go back to Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 4 and try the climbing again. That game felt as if your lower half was glued to a wheelchair at times. I remember that jumping from one platform to another sometimes resulted in the game thinking I wanted to deploy the wingsuit and causing me to fatally faceplant into something a few feet away.

I liked it, but the climbing was a bit of a fly in the proverbial ointment. Though at the 4th level in you get double jump boots and I don't recall having to deal with it ever again.

Having played the two concurrently with each other, I definitively found Overwatch sluggish in comparison. The characters are more squishy by a big margin, which creates a feeling of faster gameplay.

Glory Kills could get a bit sloggy, Cacodemons especially (who only seemed to have one animation). Upgrades can make them faster, or make them outright not required though.

To each his own though.

One of the many who I really enjoyed this awesome game. Not an excellent game mind you, but very close.

Getting a little repetitive near the end, was indeed one of the problems I encountered like yourself. Plus the glory kills get started get boring....
Finally the enemy variety wasn't big enough to keep me invested to keep playing.

However I REALLY wanted at least to get so a Boss fight before maybe to take a nreak before I continue playing the game.
..........oh boy.....
THE BOSS FIGHTS WAS THE SH*T MAN!!!!

*take a breath*
You get ready to fight Cyberdemon only to get pulled by himself by ripping open the collosus giant metal door, and start shooting rockets from frond and above and you don't know what to do but then you see the circles and bunny jump away from them and BOOM tou were licky but then fuxker start jetpack running to crash you but you avoid and you keep ajooting like crazy tjis ************ and FINALLY he fall down and you get close to remove the one thing you can get you in HELL, whxih of course happens.......BUT THEN THE CYNERDEMON GET REVIVED AND YOU START ROUND TWO, but now this asshole raise to walls creating only a straight line without any kind of escape and he start using laser waves to fuck you up but you start jump like crazy and duck to avoid them all with parkour style maneuvers and shott shoot shoot, THE SHITHEAD IS DOWN GET CLOSE FOR A FINAL TIME, YOU CUT HIS HRON AND USE IT TO FUCKING SLIDE HIS HEAD DIAGONAL!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

ALL FORGIVEN!!! Start playing again the game........oh, OOOOoooOoooooOOOOhhh! Then there was TWO MORE BOSS fights!!! Equal enjoyable.

Then the ending. YES! ALL MY YES FOR THE THING I HOPE TO HAPPEN IN THE SEQUEL.

9/10 AWESOME GAME!!!

I agree. After trying out the demo I couldn't believe that the game was received so well. I'm just waiting for Shadow Warrior 2 now. The 2013 remake was faster paced than Doom and while enemies were bullet sponges at least the weapons and powers were a lot more fun to use and they looked more appealing. Also Doom is an ugly game. Despite the shiny graphics the art style is just ugly to look at and it's not very memorable.

It was great, but since the game consists of nothing (and I do mean nothing) but combat I got tired of it fairly quick. It's super fast paced and intense, but with nothing to break up the action. This is why games can benefit from taking a breather, showing a cutscene, having a quiet moment.

Overwatch felt very light and inconsequential with all their weapons and characters, also all of those designs were just all weirdly off in a way that I cannot yet explain. The weapons looked like ugly mishape fisher-price toys, the characters, while varied, were more like ghostly apparitions and their connection to the world played more like a fart in a colander. Each match felt like a fairy clusterfuck in a paint factory for the unitiated...but how many games before the Stockholm syndrome kicks in? Whatever glossary the game didn't explain I needed, was not available in any menu, as if they expected me to be already on board with everything there. At least when MOBA's pull that, they don't pretend to be a full-priced game!

I mostly agree with the points on Doom though. It was interesting till about less than halfway through, then the game's repetition started to become more glaring with each encounter. I never could force myself to finish it, no matter how fun it felt at first. Though it is appealing mainly to the nostalgic in that sense. The weapons are designed in that manly over-compensating method which then makess me start to wonder what particular reward pathways this game is intending to coast along. If they announced a sequel, it wouldn't excite at all. The game was inarguably fun, only it cannot sustain that constant level throughout the lack of variety it presents. But it is pretty and smooth and *Shivers* dare I say "badass"?

I have not played any FPS since Stalker/Crysis that was that good. or even to some extent Half life 2. Game is truly masterpiece. Its a return of old school FPS.

I don't think it was lame. The gameplay is perfectly serviceable. Its just the interest and excitement doesn't last longer than an hour or two. Doom really should have been the length of Portal.

As far as I can tell the "Old-School FPS feel" is a state of permanent terror as any false step can bring you into sudden contact with an instant demise at the hands of a horde of enemies or hidden deathtrap.

To each his own, all I know is I'm loving the shizz out of it. I finally managed to kill the Spider Mastermind last night, and I went straight back for more.

Speed probably is highly subjective. Overwatch's Lucio does beat the Doom Marine in terms of speed, but that's because he's a pure Support character, much like Mercy. They're designed to get to where heals are needed quickly and efficiently - and Lucio, especially, to be able to apply his healing boost as an AoE, which gives him some latitude to move or otherwise attack.

The Doom Marine, however, is never in any real hurry. You're low on health? Kill something else, you'll get a pick-me-up or two. You're low on ammo? Chainsaw. Comparing Doom 2016 to Overwatch feels a bit unfair to me, seeing as speed is applied differently. Doom's sense of speed only really matters if you're looking to circle-strafe a pod of enemies or deal with one of the bigger enemy types, or switch between groups of enemies quickly.

Overwatch rarely works with pods of enemy players. Everyone is individualized, and everyone has their own base speed factor. Being quick matters a lot less than knowing who to prioritize. If not, we wouldn't have these dreaded Bastion Plays of the Game.

Eh, one man's opinion. I like it, myself. It's not just a new Doom. It's a proper Doom.

Here I will disagree. The new Doom is a awesome Revision of Doom.
While the core idea is the same [lot of secrets, kill demons, find keys, etc, etc...] the gameplay style is different.
In the old Doom you could easily explore whole maps without neccessery killing all the enemies and most of them was already part in the map.
In the new Doom most of the fights are inside "arenas" which you could only continue after you slaughtered all the demons. Also 90% of the Demons teleport to your place to kill you. None of them was already in the map.

Everyone debating old Doom vs. new Doom, and I'm sitting here remembering that my favorite Doom game is Doom 3.
