Military-style spy planes 'to be used to target civilians in the UK'

I read there and stopped. Nothing good has ever come from that source.

Also wouldn't 1984 be a better choice than V for Vendetta? It's simpler, easily recognizable, and these situations are referred to as "Orwellian."
nice avatar, top gear is awesome.

OT: I think that if this is true then what will America do? We always need to be on top when it comes to civil injustices.
Aw bless your little American socks. :)

Britain is doomed, America - save yourselves and your civil liberties while you still have them.

Some sort of magenta then.
I always pictured NOT FUCKING SURPRISED as more of a teal, personally.

I don't think the govt. has the right to spy on it's citizens, but just call me a crazy American, I guess.
"Those who quote egotistical twats to sound more important should probably be ignored." - Me

Seriously, I've been forced to read his autobiography. Awful, awful person was Benjamin Franklin. My last essay for Uni basically read "If I invented time travel, I'd go back to hunt down Benjamin Franklin to kick him in the balls."

So why was the Patriot Act passed?
What? Just because it was passed means I agree with it. I don't make the legislation in my country.

Very true - it just bugs me when Americans use that quote to say how "Orwellian" the UK is, when their own country passes similar, if not more extreme, domestic surveillance measures.

I found it on the times which is reliable so this is true after all though it look like the mail exaggerated a bit unsurprisingly.

If I ever see one, I'll throw a rock at it. I do not give anyone permission to film me without me noticing, especially not the government. They'll probably leave all the tapes on a train again.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Their just increasing the secruity around the city. Which they already do on the ground. It's not like they can see you in your homes or anything.

Sounds good to me. This as much a tool of oppression as the British Army. Yes it *could* be used wrongly, but it isn't.

And let's be honest, for anyone complaining about their privacy in an evil surveillance sciety of doom, does bored policeman #94 sitting at his desk honestly care what you're doing? No. Besides, in a public place, you can't expect total privacy.

But yeah... 'tis the Daily Fail, so it may be sliiiiightly inaccurate.

Is the British Army *not* a tool of oppression?

Ask an Afghan, Iraqi, Irishman, Indian, South African or Zimbabwean.

No hate please. My flatmate is in the British Army, and we are both fine with each other's political stance on institutionalised violent coercion (which is technically what any army does).

Seriously though, drones? Nobody can afford that right now especially not our cash-strapped government, so stop worrying. Private security company CCTV is far scarier. As are right-wing propaganda machines like the Mail.

Salud y Libertad.

Actually They have it right this time, I read the article in a science magazine, a much more respectable source.
They're going to be two types a little plane drone thing and something more along the lines of a blimp.

Our war my not be pretty, but considering the oppression behind the extremists we fight - Oppression of women, removal of education, even electricity, strict fundamentalist law backed up by armed zealots, etc. We may be in there for reasons other then justice (aka oil and lots of it), but we're fighting against oppression. If we're oppressing the oppressors, well... that seems justified. It's true that it's a small step from that to a true dictatorial police state, but in my opinion, we're capable of toeing that line.

The Telegraph also covered this [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7057094/Motorists-and-fly-tippers-could-be-targeted-by-police-spy-planes.html], for whatever that's worth. Also, the BBC did indeed cover this story...in November of 2009 [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/8380796.stm] and May of 2007 [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/merseyside/6676809.stm]. Consider yourself scooped, Daily Mail.

You'll probably find that a fleet of UAV's are a lot cheaper to operate, fuel and maintain than a single Police helicopter.

Being only a fraction of the weight of a helicopter, they'll only require a fraction of the horsepower and fuel to keep them up in the air, and being unmanned, you'll only need to employ one, semi-skilled operator rather than a pilot, co-pilot and auxiliary staff required to service helicopters.

I think they're a good idea, because they'll free up the helicopters for more important life-saving work, like search and rescue, attending RTA's and other big accidents, and coordinating ground forces in the pursuit of dangerous criminals and speeding motorists.

Also, theoretically, the Police could keep a small one in the boot of a car or a van, and then assemble and launch it to get an aerial view of an area when searching for a missing child (if a helicopter is unavailable or otherwise indisposed).

People need to stop focusing on all the sensational, sinister application of these UAV's, and think about all the good the Police do and how this excellent technology could help save lives.
