Being someone who swore off most snack foods and is getting off meats, both for starving people, I can say that this doesn't describe me as much. Nevertheless, you do have a point.
Why did you bump a month old thread?
I was led here by someone's posts on their account page and misread the date.

This book takes that argument to another level.
I'm not sure what you mean by that.

The idea that we should let people die just because the worlds overpopulated. That book's solution is that we should not only let them die, but stop agrocultural production all together, no matter how many people die of that particular action.

Basically, the author suggest we all go back to being cave men, and that one day gorillas will become as intelligent as we are and we'll all have a tea party.

Huh. It sounded a lot more reasonable from the Wikipedia article.
Because the book IS reasonable, well thought out, and for the most part true until the very end, when the talking (Excuse me, PSYCHIC) gorilla starts suggesting that we all submit ourselves to mother nature and see what happens.

Believe me, the last 50 pages shocked the hell out of me. It was a good read up till that part.

I guess I'd have to read it, then, but I take issue with the idea of just letting people die, like in the example of sacrificing a thousand babies to make one dog happy. So I don't know whether the case in that book applies to what I said earlier about the animals and whatnot being more valuable than people.

Compare the value of your charity.

1. $100 towards the seeing eye dog foundation. Your money pays for a fraction of the training of 1 dog that would slightly improve the quality of life of a blind person.
2. $100 towards starving children. You probably save the lives of multiple children and vastly increase their quality of life.

Why, when presented with these two options, would anyone choose the dog?
This is a no brainer for me:

One day, far in the future, I could be blinded and in need of a guide dog. I will never be a starving child.

And frankly, there's enough people in the World as is.

[Edit: Given the choice I would opt for neither charity. The money would go towards research to treat blindness, progress and all that]

I'll respond like I do when someone asks about my misanthropy.

I hate humans, for they're greedy, worthless wrecks with only themselves to think of.

I love humanity, mostly because it has caused so many scientific advances, as well as continuing to survive despite the plots of weak humans.

In a note, I don't give to most charities because those kids in Kenya are never going to do anything to help humanity. So what's the point?

I don't like seeing eye dogs, whenever I look at them they look depressed.

There's just so many problems though, you have to pick an choose.

I prize environmental charities over any specific one. I would rather help humanity as a whole than a specific group of unfortunate souls (don't get me wrong, blind charities and cancer foundations etc. are important too)

I wish to see significant progress in lessening global warming. [:

Because they're people? Not that the charities would necessarily be any help.

I had more to say but i'll keep this short. I'm not perfect but I consider myself to be a good person and I do try to make a difference and give alot of my money and personal time to charities, friends and family.

As for starving children, if you want people to donate then name a specific, trusted organization and promote exactly what they will be doing. I can spot a few bucks if I know that it'll not only feed these children but also improve their economy and living conditions, to the effect that my donations wont be needed some day.

You mean Misanthropists, right? Sexism is hardly relevant.

Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly with the OP and am looking forward to the day that the next Super Species pops up. Probably come from space, actually.

You can't think like that. If you want to continue to survive in this world, you must operate under the assumption that you will not negatively affect anyone by not acting; you can only help people by trying. Not trying won't hurt anyone.
-I propose a new project: We merge all charities together, and offer huge tax breaks to anyone who donates to it. I heard that people donated 4 billion dollars to charities last year. Imagine if all that money was routed through one source!
