Western Prinnies, Line Up for Disgaea 5 on PS4 Next Year

Hey, doods! Disgaea 5 will be coming to North America and Europe next fall.

NIS America [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/nis%20america] announced on the PlayStation blog Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance will arrive in North America and Europe on PS4. The cartoony strategy RPG will be available next fall.

This Disgaea game is "a tale of rebellion and revenge" - something that isn't unfamiliar to the previous games in the series. A completely new cast of characters stars Killia and his rebel army against Dark Void, an Overlord who wants to enslave the Netherworlds. Unlike other Disgaea games, Disgaea 5 has greater exploration in the Netherworlds instead of only getting a glimpse.

Going along with Killia's army, Disgaea 5 can have 100 characters on the grid-based battleground at the same time (compared to 10 on PS3 in earlier games in the series). There are even more character races and jobs than before. Revenge Mode empowers characters to get stat boosts when allies have taken enough damage.

New to Disgaea 5 is the Alliance Attack system where only main characters can use special moves when they have an appropriately aligned relationship.

Disgaea 5 launches in Japan on March 26, 2015. It will be available in North America and Europe in the following fall. It will be available both as a physical and downloadable release only on PS4.

NIS America recently addressed speculation that the company was in financial trouble. NIS America stated reports that Disgaea 5 will need to sell 150,000 copies was "self-deprecating humor." [http://www.polygon.com/2014/12/11/7377585/disgaea-5-nis-america-ps4]

One...hundred...fighters...onscreen?! I know the series is mainly for the hardcore rpg-ers, but that sounds like a chaos no rational person can control.

That's what I was going to comment on...to the point of "WE CAN HAVE 100 CHARACTERS IN A BATTLE!!!" all I can respond with is "....why?"

I'd imagine the only plausible answer is "...because we can, that's why!"

I mean seriously...what the hell? Why the hell would you need that many characters in a battle other than "Because the system's technology can support it!" For the love of all that's holy, tactics-based battles such as those in the Disgaea series take long enough as it is. Now one "turn" is going to take 20 frickin' minutes!

Which is absolutely fine for those of us who can tap into the madness that fuels all things. Let my Prinnies flow like water, as long as my Geomancer doesn't botch the bloody tile change again, and give the boss invincibility and no throw.

Let the completely OTT combo's continue!

And bring Raspberyl and her bodyguards back, even if only for a cameo.

Argh, why the fuck is the Disgaea series exclusive to Playstation still? I haven't been able to play a new Disgaea game since 2 because of it being exclusive to the PS3 and now the PS4.

I'm hopin this is just that they've been developin it for the PS4 first because its the only place they think their markets at.

Sega showed us that there is a gigantic market for games like this with the smashing success of Valkyria Chronicles. Hopefully NIS America takes note of that and ports Disgaea 5 to pc (also Disgaea 4....and 3...and many many other games).

One-hundred fighters. Good, good. Disgaea is now getting closer and closer to the roleplaying-Pikmin hybrid I've dreamed of for twenty-seven hours...

Or just give it Mighty Enemy. Have you found the Geomancer that useful? I tend to avoid it.

Their primary market is Japan. XBox is a death sentence in Japan if you expect any sales whatsoever. PC is still a nitch market in Japan. They did some test releases back in 2012 on steam, but I get the feeling that they got the same result as their test releases on the Wii.

Handhelds is your only other reliable option, but by reliable I mean 5 years later ports with maybe an occasional Prinny Bone.

If you want any games from the small devs in Japan you need something with Sony's name on it. Its been this way since the Original PS. Its to the point were they wont sell much more putting things on other platforms because nearly the entire audience is aware Sony has the Japanese small developers cornered so if you want those games you already have the system you need. The people like yourself are a small minority that hasn't justified the alternative platforms so far. This is why the Wii test did poorly. I personally would have bought some NIS games on the Wii, but I already had Phantom Brave, and Sakura Wars on the PS2.

Then there is the DLC problem. Which platform is going to get cut out of DLC? The ones with poor sales. So even if they did release it on the PC if it didn't sell well you might be left without some of the DLC they do. A small dev doesn't have the time, or money to develop for every system with every game. They have to pick their battles wisely. I'd hardly call Sega's approach "wise". Look at what it's got them over the years. This last year they've been about as bad of an investment as Oil, and they don't have an over supply to justify it. Unless you think Sonic has been over produced, which I'd agree.

I've become less and less interested in Disgaea after 3, but 100 characters at a time? That kinda makes me want to play it to see the madness in action. I guess that's one more game on the list of PS4 games that I might be interested in. Might actually have a reason to buy one soon.

That reminds me... I have yet to get into Disgaea 4... damn I'm drowning in games. Oh the woe of owning multiple platforms.

It is the only place their market is at... and no an internet darling with a lot of hype on it doesn't prove that wrong.

Why only PC? Tisk tisk, your warrior stripes are showing. You need to guard yourself better, that comment just blasted your credibility to pieces.

Why? This is Disgaea. A game where a 999,999,999 damage crit is disappointing... The game is designed to please those of us that love big numbers.

Honestly I'm just looking forward to seeing how or if we'll be controlling all 100 of those characters at the same time. As long as the pace of the combat doesn't drop because it's more effective to individually control each unit it sounds like it could be a blast.

Oh I know all about how superfluous the Disgaea series can be, but this is a step beyond. Personally I don't like my battles taking an hour and a half. The only other way I can imagine it working if you don't control each individual in turn-based combat would be if it was real-time combat where you control a single character (perhaps able to switch around). But that would make it more akin to a Dynasty Warriors game than a tactical RPG. I'd imagine even if you could set characters to auto in turn-based combat it would still take a good long while for each massive battle to end.

I said only PC because portin it to the Xbox would be a pretty disastrous mistake. Doing so would give them near 0 sales in Japan since Microsofts foothold in that region can best be described as a pinky toe. Maybe I'm terribly off-base here and there's a sizable enough chunk of EU and NA Xbox owners that want to play games like Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles that it'd make up for Japans complete lack of market penetration, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

I also wouldn't call Valkyria Chronicles an internet darling. We're talkin about a critically acclaimed game that sold worth shit on consoles, then subsequent sequels sold even worse on portables. Hype was almost nonexistent for the game up until about a week before release. I'm still shocked that the game sold as well as it did because while I knew there was an audience for games like it, I didn't realize the audience was nearly as big as it was.

I mean, maybe you're right and Valkyria Chronicles success was just some freak fluke where a game with only word of mouth hype was able to easily and consistently beat out a huge AAA game launch (albeit a really terribly launched AAA game, but considerin preorder culture we can't use that excuse for the day 1 sales) for 3 solid weeks on Steam and GMG. I happen to think its more likely that there's a market on the pc for these kinds of games because there isn't anythin really like them on the PC in the AAA market.

Provide a decent PSP Vita port, and I may finally consider getting one.
...Not gonna happen, I know. But I rather enjoyed having Disgaea 1 on the go before.

If we're talking Japan we might as well Xbox == PC pretty much. Might as well... keywords before anyone gets any bright ideas.
So your reason for mentioning only PC as that is clearly irrelevant? You're also leaving out Nintendo who have their own stable of small devs pumping out exclusives that do just fine... surely that would be the best place to expand if we're going to talk in that direction?

Initially, sold better later on. Sequels weren't as good with the third getting the typical Sega treatment.
Its release and announcement weren't exactly far apart on PC.

You know there is a reason from time to time we get EA/Ubisoft/whatever other hated company by PC warriors comes out and says the PC platform isn't credible. Quite simply the sales outsold were poor.
Lets put it this way. Take a homegrown WWE guy and stick him in the indies, heck doesn't even have to be a really hated one either and they'd get hated on easy enough... wouldn't change the fact they are bigger draws.

The others all got portable versions and I'd not think this would be different... though if its so much larger in scope... no I'm sure we'll see a copy on Vita a year, maybe two after release.

Can I play this game with out having played the previous titles or should find a used copy of a ps3 game, always been interested in this series but jrpgs have a bad habit of this being a problem.

If its like the others (which it most likely is) than yeah you can pick this up no problem. They are basically separate stories with at most some cameos (though 2 was connected to 1 more strongly).

100 characters... now I have to fight against 100 enemies and wait for each of them to take their turn... even worse I need to build a proper strategy keeping in mind the class, HP, level, and positioning of 100 characters... yeah I might skip this one because too much is a bad thing
