I first started playing when I was very young and have a very poorly painted vanilla Space Marines army. I started playing again around 2 years ago when a lot of my friends started.

I now have a badass Dark Angels army, started collecting them because I like Space Marines but wanted something a little different and the bikes look unbelievably cool (they've got wings on!!). I was incredibly disapointed when I began comparing codexs though and discovered that the vanilla marines can get the same troops with much more flexibilty for cheaper making it impossible to win with a standard set out army. I then realised that the Dark Angels have one mighty advantage......Deathwing Terminators and now field a full deathwing army with a couple of land raiders for heavy killing. Its not what I intended when I first set out but its an arse kicking very small army thats easy to carry around and theres no better feeling than watching your small elite force rip through a massive enemy horde.

I also don't like the Tau very much, every player seems to play the same stand back and shoot tactics.
Would you rather we kick you in the face with our mechs?

I used to play a lot about ten years ago, but my time has been constrained ever since, so I rarely get in a game. I played both Space Marine Salamanders and the Tyranids in 40k (much bigger fan of the SM) and my Fantasy army is Lizardmen.

The usual cycle of my interest in recent years is buying a few minis, looking into local stores that run stuff, dragging out the armies and the paints, putting together and painting a bunch, then totally running out of steam and time before getting anywhere with them. Of course, what's neat about the hobby is that the collecting, assembling and painting aspect can be enjoyed on its own.

The new resin stuff looks great, but hoo boy, they're not getting any cheaper.

If I did play, it would probably be Chaos. In addition to having pretty much everything the Space Marines have, they've got magic. And big-ass daemons. And Dreadnoughts. And KHORNE FLAKES!

But, by the way, I'd like someone to enlighten me on this: Do Thousand Sons-marines count as basic infantry? They're my favorite chapter by far, and I'm fairly certain there was some special rules for them in the rulebook.

I play space wolves and eldar. To me the wolves are the only chapter with a sense of humour and I love the viking imagery, and the eldar are beautiful and yet tragic. They can't really take a punch (more so than their dark cousins however) but use them right and they can really dish it out. I just want a new codex for them!!

I know that 40K and all GW games are expensive, but if you are smart about it and look for bargains in online stores or ebay, you can save yourself a lot of money. I very rarely buy models from GW direct anymore.

I also play necromunda occasionally like one of the other posters, my Orlock gang has been known to kick some arse on occasion, but I have played (and sold or swapped) most of the gangs over the years as I am old enough to remember when the game was first released all those years ago!!

I play Dark Eldar, Blood Angels and Chaos Daemons (slaaneshi, all diaz models).

Dark Eldar are splendid, but Chaos Daemons are exceptionally weak in 40k. A great deal must go right on the D6 and scatter dice before turn one even commences for you to have any hope of using tactics to win the game.

As for Blood Angels, they're brilliant. I don't take a large force. I take extremely small numbers of very well equipped marines in order to really make it about heroism and courageous, thoughtful play. They're quite extensively converted and lovingly painted of course.

My assault squad versus your berserkers, OP!

I used to, though haven't played in over ten years. Lost my collection of models when I moved house years ago. I had a nice force of Imperial Guard too. Love those footsloggers.

Eldar player here, craftworld of my own devising (using blue a base with lots of red detail). I play them since I enjoy a finesse army with a dated coex so as to be challenged in my armylists. Having to think on your feet and all that jazz.

I absolutely abhor chaos demons. They are mostly luck-based with their silly split-army rules for deployment, and then by having only deep striking units. This combined with an exclusively CC army leads to the battle mostly being decided in the deployment. Since if you get your deep strikes right and get the actual part of the army you want on the table you're set to win. Otherwise you tend to be screwed. The lack of ranged weapons also means that once the army is on the table the only thing left for the demon player to do is run at you and possibly space his units out for a multi-charge. Their special deployment means that they ignore any special rules for deployment from the Battle Missions book, Apoc games etc. Hence every game turns awfully samey.

Also, their codex is old, the rules vague and everything about them is in dire need of updating.

Otherwise, I play Spehz Muhreens as custom chapter with Emperor's Children colours and camp posing. Hurr hurr! Currently playing them with Blood Angel rules.
Isn't that like saying "I play to win at all costs. Since the army I wanted to field had a crap codex, I decided to paint them the way I want and then roll with the best rule-set"? :p

I've played since 2nd Edition, way back in the early 90's.

I own a very large force of Blood Angels, which have been my army from the beginning. In fact, a lot of my army is still made up of 90's figures. I still play a couple of games a week.

I also used to own a large Imperial Guard force, which I've since sold because I grew bored of playing an army whose play style is so opposite my main force, and a large Ork army which I sold without ever fielding.

The force I least like... hmm... probably the Dark Eldar. I don't know why, they just don't appeal to me at all and never have. That said, the army I have the least fun playing against are without question the Grey Knights. Their codex is such a pile of shit that they are just frustrating and un-fun to play against. Unlike a lot of people, I actually like the Tau. I get close enough, and half a squad of Death Company are enough to win me the game. :3

A couple more things: I have an aquila tattoo on the back of my neck, my girlfriend plays Eldar, and my room is stylized around 40k, with the centerpiece being a HUGE imperial banner.

40k is my favorite fictional universe, and it certainly shows. ;)

I've got a pretty large, but poorly painted Blood Angels army, when I get a job and have some money to spare I think I'm going to start collecting again.
I don't dislike any other race that much, I just hate players who use massive tanks against me because I don't have anything that can punch through high armour effectively.

i started when they released the Dark Eldar the first time. I love the Tyranids and Imperial Guard.
I hate Space Marines and Tau. first are boring second dont fit the look off everything else its just fanbait for wheeabos.

I actually found Warhammer fantasy more interesting, but didnt find enough people to play with.
then when i grew older i switched to the Spinoff games which are way better in my opinion.
Necromunda, Gorkamorka, Bloodbowl and my all time Favourite Mortheim.
edit:i forgot spacefleet gothic. Great game. though we used to just buy cheap WW2 battleship models and adapted the rules for those. later switching it to a little parallel universe sci-fi-dieselpunk version. With wacky nazi-superweapons (lances)and stuff like that.

Although I have been immersed in the universe for QUITE a while, I just started assembling my first Necron starter set.

So for, it's looking great and I can't WAIT to play a game!

Not since high school. Was always more of a Warhammer Fantasy guy too. I played Bretonia, and Chaos Undivided. I did have a reasonably sized IG army as well on the 40K front.

Ehm. Well I've got the odd model from all over the ranges but no actual armies. I just like painting/converting stuff.
Favourite ones atm:

Necron destroyer lord
Some zombies (heavily converted)
Lizardman old-blood on carnosaur

If I was going to get an army though, it would be 'Nids or maybe Dark Eldar, or orks... uhmm. Actually all the 'evil' races are fun, fluffwise.
