Actually it would be house-cats.

Demanding a certain level of luxury and pampering, the domesticated felines would struggle to go back to the rough and tough nature of the wild. Instead, they would inhabit the houses of the now deceased humans, presumably rolling around in toga's discussing philosophy in between naps.

In order to keep up their level of luxury, the house-cats would put other species to work for them in the same way as they used humans. "Food! I demand FOOD!" "STROKE ME" "Leave me alone now, I've been fed!" and so on. I assume they would play on the loyal nature of canines, however rats and mice might also live in fear and do their bidding.

The cat empire (Hmm I think that's a band name also) would continue on unheeded for many years to follow, until the other creatures discovered the ball-of-yarn warehouse in 2292 AD, and used the supplies therein to distract the cats while they underwent an uprising.

By the time the cats grew bored of the funny, silly, absurd rolling balls of yarn, it was too late, and the other creatures had already shut the cat doors to all the houses.

Thus the cat empire was forsaken to walk the wild ways of the wilderness and forever lament that they spent too much time philosophising and chasing twine.

Hooray, I officially have too much time.

Dolphins. Probably.
If they're so smart then why do they live in igloos?
Plus they can't use fire pr electricity in the ocean, so they'd be kinda stuck in the sea if they got sapience before the ability to live on land.

Would I be horribly flamed if I were to say that it would never happen because evolution between species is impossible? I would get fried, wouldn't I?
it's a theory, besides GOD could still exist, which he does.
Wow. Umm... I don't even know what to say. I just got a positive response to an anti-evolution comment. On The Escapist. With no "religious people should die" comments or anything. Kind of nice, actually...

Cuttlefish and Octopi. They have shown aspects of selective breeding, spatial reasoning, pattern memorization and other aspects which would be called "intelligent".
Dude, I'm with you on that one.
In fact, I'm kinda scared of cuttlefish evolving past us while we're STILL here.
They'll gain levitating powers and will fire zero-point energy from their eyeballs.

This reminds me of a funny comic a friend of mine made (no its not me and no I'm not plugging my comic)

I wish elephants were sentient, just because it would be hilarious talking to an elephant. You know they never forget.

Though the animal that can talk should have at least 1 kung fu style that we can learn, the old master would be the turtle and he would teach you to wait for your enemy to attack. The tiger will teach you to strike low, and the monkey would teach you to be unpredictable. How badass would it be if you could spar with a bear?!?

I'm pretty sure neurones have myelin sheaths and the impulse jumps from a node of Ranvier to another. It's how reactions can be so quick.
Exactly. Squids lack those myelin-producing cells, though, which was the flaw I was refering to.

A neurone doesn't grow in diametre it grows in length...
No, since squids don't have myelin, their neurons have become bigger in diameter instead to compensate for the lack of saltatory conduction.

...and as they are only one cell...
What?

Rats. Octopus are smart but they have too many predators of their young. To truly dominate you have to be smart, resourceful, reproduce a lot and have few predators. So rats. They reproduce so fast they could evolve new forms pretty quickly given the chance. i.e. without humans.

Terry pratchett. Can't remember name of the book, through it involves a small egypt style country.

I'd say dolphins and some other whales already have sentience, however, it's hard to measure sentience.

I think Chimbanzees would take over eventually, allthough evolution is hard to predict. Dolphins might never develop technology despite their intelligence, since they live in water and have no hands.

Things like that are hard to predict.

something tells me that juggalo's will come out of the woodwork like cockroaches, and then they'll live till, they run out of their every important anti-food source ( weed ). In which they'll all then die through inbreeding.

then badgers will rule the world

Or perhaps the squid. ("HURRAY FOR ZOIDBERG.")
Zoidberg would be more related to crustaceans i.e.crabs and lobsters than the cephlapods like the squid or mighty cuttlefish.

And obviously the cuttlefish, as XKCD proves. http://xkcd.com/520/

Spotted Hyenas. They are one of the most intelligent non-human species on the planet right now.
Of course, if they became sapient, they would likely be targeted for extinction by any civilization who feels that they would be a bad influence on their lady folks!
