I'd like it to be the Meerkat. Good at spotting danger, agile. Now imagine them in control of a fortification of some kind.

Not only is it cool, it's adorable!!!
>.> Firstly what is it about meerkats these days? Everyone seems to think about them.

And that would be awesome. I vote meerkats.

Infact.... I shall train meerkats to use guns and have them defend my house from the post man and his evil bills.

Won't be animals, insects are going to be the next rulers. They're the ones that can withstand all that rotting tissue.
you know that insect is a class of animal right?
I skipped biology to catch up on my roleplaying. ;)
I actually failed highschool biology in large part to my habit of reading D&D books in class, so i feel you there.

Gorillas.

hey, we already got Koko, the gorilla who can speak in sign language. if all Gorillas were taught sign language, or maybe even be able to speak vocally in an well-made output, we might have a Planet Of The Apes-style future.

you know?

Well I'm still waiting for the majority of humanity to gain at least an iota of sentience. Rumours speak of one or two cases, but I believe these are simply satistical artifacts.

To me any multicellular being that has the knowledge to reproduce, gather food and create a shelter for itself. We are just the most advanced beings on the earth.

They have small heads because it'd be a pain in the crotch for the mothers to be spurting out children with heads the size of a football.
That part is true-ish, now the next one..

And the heads only get bigger because of all the oxygen they has been eating - Expanding and such D: (We're all balloons really. Water balloons.)
I believe the use of "lolwut?" is in order for this part. :)

Well dolphins could never become the next dominant species because they can never master fire. Without fire, they could never really advance and create a viable civilisation.
?!?
What?
Why is fire the magic key to intelligence?

And if anything, chimpanzees could likely advance enough to form a decent civilization, they're so damn smart already. Either that or the hive ones, like ants or...
No.
Not the bees.
NOT THE BEES!

Octopi. They're the ninjas of the sea.

But really, probably chimps, or dogs. Dolphins are not as smart as most people like to think.

EDIT:

Actually, scientists believe that in the next 500 million years, a species of "terasquids" will roam the earth. The terasquids evolved from the original squid, but have gained the ability to breathe air and walk on land. The most intelligent of these species will be squibbons. These squibbons are able to swing trees, use simple tools, throw projectiles, live in colonies, and can communicate, share, fight, and live together. For all we know this species may evolve into that era's homo sapien. And if we're still around, maybe we'll be able to contact them. They maybe our first alien contact. Also, another species of terasquids called mammoth squids will exist. A 10 foot tall, 8-ton, squid capable to move on land. It has NO bones, and has a series of muscles that provide shape and structure. This species plagues the squibbons, but are quickly dealt with.
NO! We're all doomed!

Would I be horribly flamed if I were to say that it would never happen because evolution between species is impossible? I would get fried, wouldn't I?
