What animal would gain sentience?

I'd like it to be the Meerkat. Good at spotting danger, agile. Now imagine them in control of a fortification of some kind.

But really, probably chimps, or dogs. Dolphins are not as smart as most people like to think.

Actually, scientists believe that in the next 500 million years, a species of "terasquids" will roam the earth. The terasquids evolved from the original squid, but have gained the ability to breathe air and walk on land. The most intelligent of these species will be squibbons. These squibbons are able to swing trees, use simple tools, throw projectiles, live in colonies, and can communicate, share, fight, and live together. For all we know this species may evolve into that era's homo sapien. And if we're still around, maybe we'll be able to contact them. They maybe our first alien contact. Also, another species of terasquids called mammoth squids will exist. A 10 foot tall, 8-ton, squid capable to move on land. It has NO bones, and has a series of muscles that provide shape and structure. This species plagues the squibbons, but are quickly dealt with.
