I think that chimps, dolphins, and squids are the most logical next step.

there are several animals that have shown that they can look in a mirror and recognize themselves: whales, dolphins, elephants...etc...

Just cause we're the worlds best engineers (yay thumbs!) doesn't mean there aren't other smart self-aware animals. Sorry for gushing, but it's true.


personally, I think that whales and dolphins are already sentient. They have already been found to have a lot of the neuronal components scientists thought were uniquely human.
