I'm certain they've never done this animal before-

Man. Seriously, there's not one pokemon that resembles a man. Unless you count Ditto that cute pink slime critter who can appear to look like anything it wishes. Not even sure if it has a gender or not at all.

Tyrogue

Mr. Mime
Jynx

I got more...
Personally, I have yet to see a platypus one (psyduck is a DUCK!)
Don't forget Gardevoir... she very much resembles a woman, ala Jynx.

Linoone from Ruby and Sapphire is a Badger. Can we stop arguing about the existence of a Badger pokemon
Thanks but we already did, we're talking about the existence of a beaver Pokémon now. Although that's kinda done with too, Bibarel is a beaver Pokémon.

electross is a lamprey, which is a fish
Lampreys are eels, not fish. Neither are leeches (except for the parasitic lampreys), so you are also correct.

Actually, I'd imagined Eelectross as more of a cookiecutter shark, an interesting (and bioluminescent) cousin to the lamprey... and realize the game needs one of those immediately.

Sorry, but I see no true-blue Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Thank you for that idea.

Bagon [http://serebii.net/pokedex-bw/371.shtml].

It's too small, but it's the closest thing to a "true" Tyrannosaurus Rex in the game. All of its proportions are correct, and distinct from its theoretical concept (which was later more accurately represented by Cranidos and Rampardos).

Also, what do you mean by "It's called taking creative liberties"? When you say that it sounds like whoever designed Typhlosion was assigned to making a Pokémon that resembles a badger as if Pokémon claims that their Pokémons (oh God) look like animals and that they could be sued if this wasn't true.
I'm pretty sure they're just inspired by animals and so what they come up with doesn't really have to look like any animal at all.(...)
Oh jesus, fuck me. From what I can tell, you kind of defuncted this whole thread by saying how Pokemon are inspired by animals, rather than making carbon copies of them with anime eyes.

And for the final record, yes there is a beaver Pokemon, it is called Bibarel. Please take this complimentary shotgun to blow your own brains out with after viewing it, because it's fuck ugly.
How did I kind of defunct this whole thread by saying how ("I'm pretty sure..") Pokémon are inspired by animals, rather than making copies of them with anime eyes?

Tarantula, a spider that is designed to hunt.

Actually, I don't remember them making an ant. Followed by an ant eater.

Stick insect?

Prey Mantis?

Raptor?

Edit: OK, They've done an ant called Durant. Thanks for that.

Not all sharks are created equal. Sharpedo is clearly modeled after a combination of Great White and Tiger sharks (with no tail). Cookiecutter sharks have round, lamprey-like mouths and long, barracuda-like body structure. There are a dozen or so tropical fish type Pokemon (we have two piranhas, for God's sake!), and at least as many mice and similar rodents. Why must there be only one shark?

Speaking of a bazillion kinds of fish, where are the swordfish, sailfish, or marlon? Where are the whelk Yahtzee made up in his Pokemon review (yes, I know Magcargo is a snail. a snail is not a whelk any more than it's a conch... also why no conch)? I'm still waiting for a Kraken or Fire Octopus evolution of Octillery.

Speaking of mythical critters, as much as I like Chandelure and its family (very cool pokemon, in my opinion), I was a little disappointed there were no flaming skull pokemon, perhaps an evolution of Spiritomb, perhaps with Cubone's skull so it can have a special evolution method. (It could be tricky and be actually ghost/ice or ghost/ground type.) And what about a poltergeist (sorry, but rotom is not good enough)? It could be easy justification for a ghost/psychic or ghost/steel type.

How long is it going to take before they make a roach? Surely they're the most common bug next to houseflies (which I'm perfectly fine not seeing as a pokemon, thank you. and no, Pawniard is not a roach. It's a beetle, very similar to a dung beetle). Or the Red "Fire" Ant, Durant is a step in the right direction, but its not quite there.

Surely there's possibility for some odd combinations too. If Deerling can be Normal/Grass, why not have a Husky or Malamute as Normal/Ice type?

Dinosaurs are another fertile source of inspiration, such as Dimetrodon, Ankylosaurus (Groudon doesn't count, I wants me a hammertail), and Stegosaurus.

Just because it's kind of a defunct topic to begin with, since I'd say only about two thirds of all of the current pokemon are based off of animals. And when I say based, I mean they take very loose inspiration from them and then go "Fuck it, MOAR WINGS!!".
I guess what I meant is that you brought it impotence of this thread into view.
